The team is going to be the youngest it’s been in a long time and possibly even ever. Culture carriers like Jay Beagle are a must have in these circumstances.

Culture carriers: Tanev, Edler, Gudbranson, Del Zotto, Biega, Eriksson, Gagner, Sutter. Also Horvat and Baertschi (both entering their fourth season with the Canucks).

The Canucks have culture carriers. What they need now is to develop young players and manage assets, not to sign more veteran defensive forwards to add to the group that struggled to score last season.

Months ago, the discussion was about signing a centre to play with Pettersson, which made a certain amount of sense, as recent acquisitions Granlund and Gagner seemed to prove themselves incapable of handling that role. Why did the talk shift away from that goal? Who is going to play with Pettersson? How did it become accepted that Gagner could take on that responsibility, when the consensus was that he was not capable of handling duties in the middle?

I think the new plan is that Sutter will play with Pettersson.

Both scenarios are not ideal. I still think moving Gagner + Hutton or something along those lines for a 2C is better off. A guy I'd really look at is Brock Nelson, but I have no idea really where his value lies.

Okay, you're just messing with me. Right? I said ... right?

God I hope that you're wrong.

Really, at this p0int I'd prefer that they just play him at centre, put him maybe with Eriksson and Baertschi, shelter that line somewhat, and go from there. Tell Green that when Pettersson comes back to the bench after getting burned in his own zone, his job is to say "that's okay kid, you're getting there."

Beagle for 2.5 x 2 years is fine with me. We aren't in a cap crunch, and could use the veteran experience with the young roster. When I say fine, I mean I won't be happy and won't be mad and this ties into the whole argument that the team has been so badly run up until recently that not making catastrophic mistakes is now being seen as a positive and that management is learning, even though they'd set us back 2 years initially.

That's part of why as of now I think he plays with Gagner. Gagner starts there and then if Petersson shows he has the strength he gets a look at 2C with Gagner sliding over to the wing. It keeps the same line chemistry but changes the positional dynamic.

There are actually quite a few reports of players' agents contacting the Canucks. I guess that answers the question of who wants to play here.

It’s absolutely ridiculous that this team is still obsessed with adding more “insulation” and “culture carrier”. This team has zero players under the age of 20 - potentially 1 if Pettersson plays - and yet apparently we need to add more 4th liners who know how to win. At this point 90% of our roster is insulation. What would be nice would be having some more players worth insulating.

Money talks, and Benning has made it clear he has no idea what it's worth. If I were an agent looking for an unjustified payday for my client, I'd call him too.

Apparently the price tags on potential 2nd line UFA centers (Bozak, Nash, etc.) is just too high (too much term). I would rather give Gaudette an opportunity to seize second line duties or let Granlund or Gagner fill in if Gaudette struggles instead of being stuck with a mediocre overpriced UFA for 5 or 6 years. Pettersson might end up being our second line Center by mid season, let’s give the kids a chance to shine.

If we do sign Beagle hopefully we don’t sign anyone else, there are too many bodies and not enough roster spots, let’s see what the young guns can do.

2.5 for 3 isn't ideal, but is that any worse then anyone last year? Vane maybe.

We had what Nilsson brought. We had what Gagner brought. We had what Del Zotto brought. All of those contracts are worse, and redundant.

We love to hate our 4th liners here though. We can't hate Horvat or Boeser if were not winning, so I sense a new whipping boy.

If Beagle is enroute to the Canucks, surely they have to be entertaining offers on Sutter. I mean how many non-scoring 'culture-carriers' can one team afford?

Beagle’s a pretty good player. I’m not looking forward to watching him get tuned up the first time he drops the gloves though.

Hopefully Beagle has a Richardson-like impact for us, and we can flip him for a pick at the TDL....

Rieder would be alright too. Don't see him choosing us over the Flames though.

This is just a gut feeling, but I think they've looked at the #2 center market and realized it's overpriced guys or guys that have no interest in playing here and - wow, look! - we've got a 20-goal center on the roster in Sutter! And he can cover Pettersson defensively!

But if Sutter is doing that, we need a checking center. So I think there's a good chance we'll see Beagle as the #3 center, not the #4.

Pure speculation and a gut feeling based on how this group tends to do things, plus the various rumours/non-rumours we're hearing.

A package of Gagner and Hutton has negative value.
True, but either way move those bodies out and somehow trade for a 2C instead of the term for the mediocre UFA options. That's why I keep circling back to Nelson. Play him as the 2C for now and when we have an adequate replacement, shift him to LW.
