nylander is insanely skilled and the mere fact the leafs have two other really good guys, should not obscure the fact he'd be considered the future on a lot of teams. no way are the leafs moving him for tanev and some minor pieces. if a deal like that was on the table you take it and run and sort out how to handle so much skinny skill later.

Pretty much. All this nonsense about too much softness and having leverage in the deal is laughable.

The context to Kypreos's speculation was that Nylander would be expendable because the Leafs would need to cut salary.

...and that's only if they land Tavares.

Murph was saying this morning that his chatter leads him to believe it'll be San Jose that lands Tavares. Having him in our division will be fun in all the worst ways.

Dhaliwal reporting the Canucks kicked the tires on Maroon and Holden, and that discussions continue between the Canucks and Tobias Rieder's agent. If all we did was add Rieder, I'd be a happy camper. Too much stupid money and term is going to be thrown around on July 1st, and we already have enough of both.

eventually. but right now they could sign tavares and limp through the season or move someone like ron hainsey if needbe.

Well, we are going to suck anyways, might as well see good and exciting players every night curb stomping us.

I dunno, actually. Toronto is going to have trouble resigning all of their kids. Giving them fair value in trade here actually kinda helps them out in a few years.

Right now we have to do what’s best for this team now and in a few years. So if we help out Toronto it doesn’t matter because they aren’t our competition, we are in competition with ourselves only.

The possible Tanev for Nylander trade helps us too much for the future to not do it.

sbisa's next contract is worthy of a pool. will he get term. will he get paid.

i think his last game of the season with every gm watching probably cost him $1m/year and a year of term.

Oh, yes. I am under no illusion that this team is going to be any good this year. I'll be happy if guys like Boeser, Pettersson and any of our other prospects play well - this is a development year for them. I feel bad for poor Markstrom and whoever is backing him up...this is going to be ugly.

Which gets back to what I was kind of saying - I wouldn't want to accept a "fair value" trade here because we're helping Toronto out. I want a trade where we get good value back for Tanev. It will not be a 1:1 trade - the rumor was that it "starts with Tanev".

Yes, that's if they land Tavares. Just like yesterday John Shannon speculated if Tampa lands Tavares that they would look to trade Kucherov (ouch).

I agree that I think San Jose is the better fit. Tavares just slides in where Thornton was. Non-traditional hockey market where there won't be much pressure, great weather, solid community. Good team that could contend still. If he doesn't re-sign in New York that's where I would put my money on.

I saw the idea floating around of signing Tavares to a 1 year, $16M deal, and then look to sign him to a longer term contract next year with a lower cap hit. I'm not all that familiar with Toronto's cap situation, but that Marleau contract isn't looking very good. If they land Tavares I would probably look to move him out, as well as Nazem Kadri before I look to move out Nylander.

We have to get to the playoffs first. Right now this is such an awful team I really think they're destined for 31st. It'll be a race between Vancouver, Detroit and Ottawa for last in the NHL.

Bringing in Nylander probably puts us 2 more elite forward prospects away from where I think this team needs to be. Right now we have Horvat and Boeser as top 6 locks. Pettersson is looking good, and Nylander would fit in there as well. I still think we need another elite 1C (hoping the 2019 draft will provide that), and we need help on the left side. Maybe Dahlen can fill that but we'll have to see how he does in the AHL this year before we can really determine that. He did look good in the Allsvenskan though.

Concurrently there needs to be a focus on building up the defense even more. The right side of our D is completely barren. Now that we have Quinn Hughes in the system, I truly believe he could be a top pairing puck moving defenseman for us. That shifts Juolevi down to the 2nd pairing where I think he would be better suited anyway (if he hits his potential).

It would sure be nice to have another 1st round pick for the 2019 draft.
Another first this last draft would have been amazing- hell even another high second would have made a huge stride to double down on the right side. Hopefully we can move Edler at the TDL and get a good return for this draft.

Edler should get us a 1st at the TDL. MDZ should get us at least a 3rd as well.

Having said that...I fully expect more Tyler Motte's. :shakehead

Kempny gets $2.5MM—big payday for the amount of NHL games's he's played over last couple years. But another guy I would probably take over Gudbranson at 4MM.

Good god please no. That's the one thing that JB has going for him going into the next deadline- what he does with it is to be seen. We have all on expiring deals: Edler, MDZ, Hutton, Pouliot, Granlund, Leipsic, Motte, Nilson, Gaunce, Goldobin. That's a lot of potential to get moved for picks if he plays his cards right- moving even 3 of those bodies would be considered a huge win with his past deadline track record.

Yeah I'm hopeful Dahlen can recreate some of that magic he had with EP eventually and be a serviceable player in that role - in Sweden he's rated quite highly I believe (not as much as EP however probably a bit higher than a lot of us give him credit for).

I completely agree that our issue has been that we lack high end pieces - we have a team mostly composed of 3rd and 4th line players who are being thrust into roles they are not suited for (Sutter as a 2nd line center - not a good idea at all). I think we are still 2 drafts away from obtaining those unless one of our current prospects happens to come out of nowhere (Out of anyone I have the highest hopes for Gaudette). Nylander would definitely help in that regard.

While I am not at all opposed to trading Tanev and was originally a proponent of it I am a bit more reluctant to do so especially now that I'm thinking there is a solid chance that Hughes will make the team. You can debate whether or not this is the right move but that's another discussion. I tend to think there's a 50/50 chance he will be on the team at some point this year. You also have to assume similar odds for OJ so the issue becomes this - if we jettison Tanev we have 1 - yes only 1 proven top 4 guy. You can't expect a bunch of 5-8's to all of a sudden step up into those roles - it's just not realistic. So at that point with 1 only proven top 4 guy that you feel comfortable playing most anyone with what are you going to do with the rest of the D? Unless you are going to go out and acquire a top 4 guy you are putting guys in WAYYYY over their head - not a good recipe for success. (not that I expect to be successful this year - we are destined for a bottom 5 finish again which is fine and anticipated - I just worry about the development of our young players with this much of a disaster looming).

I too would almost rather keep Tanev around this year to mentor Juolevi when he comes up from Utica via injuries or TDL trades. Then the following year he mentors Hughes and gets flipped at that deadline- hopefully his value is back up again by then. However Nylander is very intriguing- I am not as high on him as I am on Ehlers when we talk about who we should have drafted but Nylander would add a ton of skill to the lineup. Potentially a Swedish line of Dahlen-Petersson-Nylander could be deadly- though slight in size. It would depend on what the add is to Tanev for me. Goldobin tier prospect I'd pull the trigger, but anything higher and I would be hesitant.

Wouldn’t mind Maroon or someone like Jay Beagle. Our forwards are too soft and we need more bite. We need players that will go into corners and win puck battles and feed our young skilled players. You can have a lot of skill but it’s useless if you never have puck possession.

Bob saying the Canucks are expected to land Beagle. I'd rather have Rieder - I don't dislike Beagle and think he could bring some valuable things to our team. But...I have the sinking feeling I'm not going to be a fan of the term and cap hit he's going to bring with him.

anything more than a 2x2 i will not be happy with.

but i guess i can understand wanting to bring someone with cup experience to the team. probably better than plenty of the other "mentors" we have brought in.

now at least TRY to move gagner or sutter.

We're gonna overpay for Jay Beagle to play on the 4th line ughhhh.

Look forward to $7MMish between Sutter + Beagle.
