We are probably to the point now that even C grade free agents that get massively overpaid, will do the rounds of the league before they circle back to a team like ours. A good thing.

will be interested to see if johnson's contract is structured for term to work around his bankruptcy settlement. he apparently owes 10% of the first 3 years of the contract if certain conditions are triggered.

This is great news.

If this team doesn't get any impactful players in free agency, I think you have a very good contender for 31st in the league. Tell me: who would be worse? Ottawa is there, maybe Detroit. Buffalo and Arizona look to be on their way up.
Vegas could come crashing back down to earth as well.

given we are no longer associated by rumour with a single big ufa signing and our name has fallen off all the sexy trade rumours since the draft, i am beginning to think that is now the plan since we got hughes. there seems to be an abrupt change of direction. it looks like we will sign some guys to shelter the kids and go hard for jack.

This team has been awful for years, but now you think the plan is to continue that?

I say show me. If the plan really is to be bad this upcoming year then let's see them trade some veterans for picks, and replace those veterans with some low level signings. Sutter should be gone. Tanev (or at least Edler who's a UFA next year), and perhaps taking on a cap dump to acquire more draft picks. Let's see it.

well look at what they're not doing.

didn't you fully expect us to try and sign bozak, and now we're not? aren't you surprised we didn't make a valiant doomed effort to chase tavares? didn't you expect us to find a way to spend the sedin cap room like a drunken sailor?

we just lost our 2 top all time scorers and a significant chunk of our scoring. we have made no effort by trade or by rumoured ufa signing to replace that scoring.

the math is pretty simple: last year - sedins + possible steps by others - edler and tanev getting older = ??.

we don't need to drop a single veteran to have a very good shot to get to 31.

Offering money and term to centers like Nash and Bozek would be worse than the Gagner-Del Zotto signings....best solution is to muddle by with the centers they've got and hope Pettersson can move into the middle by mid-season. And unless they blow their brains out to try an acquire O-Reilly or are willing to eat a really bad contract (Spezza) there just isn't any help on July 1st.

Tavares dictated who got to make a pitch to him. Jim Benning wouldn't have been let into the building.

I am pleasantly surprised that they aren't in on Bozak because of the price. Now let's see how the rest unfolds, but I stand by my comments.

Stay away please!!

Eh, depends on term. I'd be happy to overpay on dollars if the term was 2-3 years. Nash could be a perfect asset to flip at the TDL to a team desperate for C depth, which is close to 100% of teams going into playoffs.

The counter-argument to this is, of course, Benning.

I look forward to a summer of very minor signings without any one of significance coming here. We are a developing team. Let the kids play. Finish in the bottom 5, have a strong crack at Jack Hughes and I would call that a successful year. If we get a strong pick next year, we can start to think about getting better. Seems to me that we are not bound for the playoffs for the next 2-3 years though.

I wouldn't mind taking a flyer on Matthew Peca. Seems to have good wheels from what little I've seen and is good on faceoffs. Should come pretty cheap given he's unproven. Two years around a million? Worst case scenario you send him to the minors and becomes the Comet's 1C.

My worry is that all indications point to the Canucks being hell-bent on a winning-pedigree veteran player who can "protect" (whatever the hell that means) our young players like Reaves or Beagle.

Ideally we can be completely shut out from the mid-tier UFAs on the market and we end up in the $1MM/1 year low risk medium upside signings bin like Matthew Peca or Anthony Duclair.

It's going to be especially hilarious going into the season with the exact same D-core and 90% the same forward group though.

I agree but I guess I keep hoping (foolishly I know) for some semblance of a smart plan. For example overpay to sign Nash then flip Sutter to one of these "many teams" that apparently keep calling on him.

Makes too much sense to actually happen I guess.

I apologize about player spelling..

Ericksson Horvat Boeser
Granlund Gaudette Pettersen
Baertschi Beagle Virtanen
Gagner Sutter Gaunce
Leipsic
Goldobin Dhalen

With rumours that Jay Beagle is heading to the Canucks on July 1st, I really hope we don’t sign anyone else. I’m happy Bozak is out of the picture and hope we pass on Riley Nash and Derek Ryan as well. There is a log jam upfront (and on defence), By just picking up 1 ufa (Beagle), Goldobin and Dhalen are on the outside looking in. We are not competing for the Stanley cup, Give our youngsters a chance to play. The Canucks should be assessing what they have instead of signing overpriced mediocre ufas that will further block roster spots. Also really hope Beagle is max 2 years at 3 mill per year and nothing more.
