They couldn't even move a 55 point Vanek on an expiring deal for a mid-round pick.

And this bears repeating, contenders want expiring rentals, not guys with term–most contenders are cap strapped and have to deal with future years tagging rule.
Teams want players that can help them on defense not hurt them. Defense wins championships. Vanek is a defensive liability that could just kill you in the POs and could only help you on the PP...not many contenders are looking for help on the PP that late in the season and definitely not from someone you could not trust defensively to play 5 on 5. Teams are looking for help from proven PK specialists and especially 60% FO guys with SC experience. Your apples vs oranges comparison makes my point.

i do not see leipsic on this team opening night unless there are injuries or trades.

if you assume the canucks move nobody, keep 8 dmen on the big roster and have no camp forward injuries, then for leispsic to make the opening night roster roster he will need to beat out all but one of the following players:

pettersson
goldobin
gaudette
dahlen
gaunce
motte
boucher
archibald
jasek
palmu
kero
lind

basically, leipsic is one of 13 guys who are fighting for 2 roster spots due to these 11 guys being in front of them

horvat
baertschi
sutter
erikkson
gagner
beagle
schaller
roussel
boesser
granlund
virtanen

I expect Granlund and/or Goldobin to be moved for peanuts in the next few weeks. There seems to be a “softy” purge in the works with the team swinging 180 from “adding skill” at the 2017 TDL/summer (Gagner, MDZ, Vanek, Goldobin, Dahlen) to “adding grit/checking/character” at the 2018 TDL/summer (Motte, Beagle, Roussel, Schaller). Leipsic falls in the middle of these two swings, having both some skill and some bite to his game so I will be absolutely stunned if he is not on the roster come Game 1 of the season.

They brought Shanahan in and he observed the team for nearly a whole season and then came to the decision that the whole thing had to be burnt to the ground and rebuilt. This is what the Canucks need to do.

Shanahan and Linden took over their respective clubs at the same time. Just look at the stark difference in how each has chosen to operate. On a day where Shanahan has taken his team to the next level, Linden is in hot pursuit of over-paying 4th liners. It's amazing how stark the difference is between how these clubs are run. Linden is a dinosaur.

How much did NYR get for Rick Nash at the TDL? How about for Michael Grabner? Do those guys play great defense?

Well, why would they trade him so quickly. The point of signing him in the first place is to stabilize your PK and taking key face-offs until your young players can learn how to do that in the NHL. After a few years, you can move him easy. You might have to take back a bit of term and salary from a reclamation project but then again we won't be needing to worry about fitting under the cap as the next years draft players will still be on ELCs let alone this and last years. This is not Lucic or Price or Weber that you are trying to move.

In “a few years” Beagle is going to be 35 or 36 and in rapid decline.

His value is going to be near zero.

actually, hot pursuit of over paying 4th liners is not a dinosaur thing. it's kind of innovative since nobody does it ever.

otoh signing the top ufa on the market at any cost is very dinosaurish.

To be fair, both of those guys suck and deserve to be purged. It was ridiculous that Granlund was even qualified.

Personally I think it's much more likely that Gaunce/Archibald are SOL than Granlund.

The big difference is that Shanny was given the power to go completely tear down and rebuild mode and Linden was not...the owner wanted a Sedin farewell tour. I think the culture change MIGHT start this year. in Nuckville..I would like to see the owner give Linden the chance to succeed or fail on his own merits.

"fully expect" or just "expect"?

Oh Gaunce is already gone in my books. There’s absolutely no room for him with Beagle signed. I doubt they’ll even trade him, probably just hit waivers when rosters need to be finalized.

I still expect one or two wingers to be moved for a 5th round pick or combined with a 4th for someone like Slater Koekkoek.

I disagree. Benning has never prioritized gritty players. I thought Gillis was bad, but this is actually the softest Canucks team I can ever remember. I think the bias is because he was a Boston AGM? Every time Benning acquires a grittyish player people completely overreact.

granlund was not qualified. we just signed him for 50% more than qualifying. i don't see any evidence of a softy purge in that move.

i sort of agree with you in that think these ufa signings are more of a vote of non confidence in gaunce and archibald than in granlund.

I'd actually consider Granlund for a 5th or Granlund + 4th for Koekkoek both to be good deals. It's going to be much worse than that.

Could you give me the winning numbers for the lottery oh great Swami...by the way Marleau, Thornton and a host of others from the over -the- hill gang say hello

Ya, that’s exactly the group of players I think of when I’m picturing effective 35+ year olds. Selanne, Jagr, Marleau, Hossa, Thornton, and Jay Beagle. It just rolls off the tongue.

Moving Gaunce and Archibald is not enough to alleviate the logjam of bodies created by the July 1 signings.

Pick your favourite.

i was just trying to rate your comment on the y2k hyperbole scale. "fully expect" means he expects nothing of the kind but is throwing shade. "expect" means it might possibly happen but primarily he is throwing shade. which was it?

The contract is awful but Beagle won’t decline. He’s a gym nut and in the best shape of his life.

But how the actual **** does Riley Nash get less term and money than Beagle. Wtf Benning...garbage.

Nobody does it because it's idiotic. Would that be a better descriptor?

Dinosaur NHL execs believe that supporting youth with grit+less skill is better than supporting youth with more skill. They think it's better to add to culture and training practices than actually pushing play on the ice. This is why they chase and overpay role players like Sutter. And now, Beagle and Roussel.

Linden has a picture in his mind of a team that Quinn (RIP) taught him to build. And he's doing his level best to re-create it. Not understanding that the game has changed, and that this prehistoric understanding of how to build a team is no longer relevant or applicable.

I dunno. Too tired to figure it out.

It is because that was one of his tenets when he came in (ie Dorsett, Sbisa). He goes on about when he acquires a play he thinks has it (Prust, Gudbranson, Sutter). In reality he hasn't generally carried through and acquired much grit, and what he has acquired either wasn't as gritty as he thought (Sutter, Gudbranson) or is long gone (Prust, Dorsett).

Everyone declines. How he plays is hard to maintain when the skating starts to go and the miles pile up.
