Impossible for Gaudette to make the team now. Benning made sure of thsy yesterday.

Sutter
Erikson
Horvat
Boeser
Baertschi (just Signed)
Granlund (just signed)
Beagle (just signed)
Rouseell (just signed)
Shaeler (just signed)
Gagner
Leipsic (traded for last year)
Virtanen (HFs golden boy).

That’s 12 forwards. That is not including Peterson , Gaudette , Goldobin, Motte, Gaunce.

MAYBE they would sit Liepsick for Peterson, no problem.

Absolutely no room for Gaudette and the rest.

You can thank Benning for yesterday.

I personally hope Goldobin is gone as a Canuck he seems very lazy.
Gaudette is done as a Canuck? He is a part of our core going forward and will put in the work to make the team.

lmao. "god I wish we wouldn't sign older guys to term" "hmmm seems like you can't handle a rebuild."

Hypothetically...what if they *did* praise those moves.....and then watched them fail............and then learned from it.......................

I take it you’d like to go 0-82 in a year to help the rebuild right?
A team of rookies will do exactly that without veterans. Zero voice in the locker room and nobody to look up to in order to learn how to become a professional Hockey player.
These kids basically just came out of high school. These kids usually live with the vets and their families because they are too young to live by themselves.

Thank god some people aren’t in charge of this team lol

So took a day to calm down... relax... look at everything, listen to interviews...

The players are light years better than what we had. But if you have to give term, and it sounded like they did not have to give that term, it’s a terrible move. To me term should never be a deciding factor.

And Pettersson, Dahlen, Gaudette, def should earn their spots, but also shouldn’t lose because you’re committed to these other Vets. I hope Gagner, Ericksson, Sutter aren’t just gifted spots. I want the vets to earn their spots.

That was really what made me upset. It just seemed like the vets will just be gifted spots. I hope Travis can see past the “Vets” glasses to truly ice the best team possible.

Looking at our roster, do we clear 210 goals on the season? Combine that with a team that allowed 264 goals last year without any appreciable improvement on defense or in goal... I think we are looking at a very very bad team

Reading a few comments on twitter stating "who cares about term and money it's not your money" makes zero sense in a salary cap league.

Those are viable arguments...if they were 1 or 2 year deals. All this is going to do is get in the way of young players. What if Gaudette is ready? He basically has to beat out a guy making 3 mil a year for 4 years to get his spot on the team. Since his contract status makes it more viable for him to stay in the minors than someone else, what do you think will happen?

The kindest thing I can say about Benning’s moves is that he’s possibly the best tanker the league has seen in years.

Cause god knows these players have never won anything before. Right Petterson?

Cause last season proved young teams can’t turn a corner Colorado and New Jersey.

That we don’t have enough with Horvat, elder Sutter Eriksson Tanev Biega Baertschi Gudbranson.

Look Ryan Miller, I am so glad you have nothing better to do but at least try. It’s raining here at the lake house and I could use some more entertainment.

Hordi and Eager are nowhere near the players these two are. These guys average around 30 points the last 4 years and are very well respected Pk/faceoff guys around the league.
The potential to add 60 points and be one of the best Faceoff/penalty killing teams in the league is well worth the contracts.

Beagle is mostly a 20 point player with one season at 30 points. Over the last 5 years, the team that he played for scored the 3rd most goals. Washington scored an additional 220 goals than Vancouver over that span. Yeah, he's going to put up points being a secondary player on an incredibly deep and elite offensive squad.

Vancouver, before we lost 150 points in Vanek Sedin Sedin, were a bottom 5 offence in the league. This is a team that is going to be agonizing to watch offensively.

Roussel, on the other hand, is a much more legitimate 15-15-30 player, and someone you would to a team that is trying to add an edge for the playoffs, which is not something we'll have a sniff at. This is also not a player you give 4 years to. Or that dollar amount after his worst NHL season in the past 5 years.

The main problem with Roussel is the amount of time he spends IN the penalty box, instead of helping the penalty kill. It also wouldn't surprise me to see Roussel less likely to fight now that he has term and security–these are the guys you need to keep hungry to keep their job.

Gaudreau who was like 22/23 when entered into the NHL?
Marner who has to play most of the year with Matt Martin on a line? Marner is insolated and he had vets like Marleau/Martin/Komarov etc. Veterans kind of like what we went out today and grabbed.

Oh yeah, that time when Marner was essentially punished by being demoted to the 4th line to play with Martin.

Word is that JVR didn’t even get a NTC.

But these 4th liners did.

Typically you get a $ discount when you offer the NTC, but somehow the guys we signed got absolutely everything they wanted with minimal pushback. The tunnel vision these guys get when they find "their guy" is unreal.

Canucks most likely won't be competitive for 3-5 years. By then these bad contracts won't matter as much.

This is not a good rationale. Every move made is a reflection of the competency and ability of the management group, and by all indications, they tend to make about 95% poor moves and 5% decent moves.

When this team is ready to compete, and we need to surround our young talent with the right cast of support players, does anyone actually feel confident that this management group, the group that has routinely targeted patently awful NHL players, is going to have the ability to do so?

And furthermore, there are plenty of cheap hungry players who just need an opportunity to shine that we could be looking at instead. Managing the cap is incredibly important and the standings result wouldn't be different if we had a cap floor $57MM team vs the projected $70MM team we're about to roll out. Why not hold onto cap space for key RFA extensions? To take on a bad contract in exchange for picks?

Just roll out a hungry young team full of guys with something to prove.

Unfortunately his team won the Cali road trip in 2016 and actually cost us Matthews/Laine, which is a real kick in the teeth. We were also had a great chance to finish 31st (which did end up winning Dahlin) but our fantastic vets in Sutter/Jokinen/Gagner single handedly won us several meaningless games.

True but I don’t blame Jimbo for those brief flashes of success. He’s doing his best to sink us to the bottom.

The veterans and their leadership, showing “how to play the right way” has led to the worst record in the NHL the past 3 years.

I can just picture how sad and confused Jim is why people don't like his free agent signings.

A salary cap means nothing to a rebuilding team, but is critical to a contending team. A rebuilding team does not have to worry about the salary cap as high value free agents will NOT be signing with them. As such it can afford to carry players that can help the young budding stars develop into star players and not bust. By the time the young stars are ready to carry the team, and more assets are needed through free agency, these vets are off the books. This is not a difficult concept to understand for most.
