First of all, it's a modified NTC. and it really doesn't hamper our ability to trade him, we still have a choice of 24 teams to which we can trade him.

I think you missed the point. What needs explaining is how 2 of the top 5 free agents available...top 6 players...received no form of NTC...but a journeyman 4 liner did.

In a vacuum, sure. But in real life, if you want players to come to the worst team in the NHL over the course of the last 3 years, you need to give little more to get them.

The point is just that this management team gets taken for a ride at every opportunity. More term? Sure. More $$? Of course. NTC for a bottom line player, of which literally dozens are available for the minimum come July 15th? Definitely

Yeah, but if you want the best of best 4th liners, you have to sign them July 1st for bloated contracts.

Really? Explain why?

Jay Beagle has been a pretty average 4th line player for most of his career on an under achieving team. One Cup run and now this 33 year old 4th liner is a must have?

When you are at the bottom of the NHL, trying to rebuild into respectability you need to keep flexibility to move players for picks and prospects. Locking journeymen up until they are 37...signing immovable contracts...is poor management. You can can get players at half the price and half the term to fill the same role as other teams, even the Oilers did.

The Benning bro's absolutely slagged Gillis for his N.T.C.'s but when Benning gives them out it's like no big deal.

Gillis gave them out trying to keep a cup contender together. Benning gives them out to keep the culture of the worst team in the NHL the last 3 years.

Those aren't the guys who'll end up moved or out of luck. It's the younger, cheaper, more effective guys that are screwed.

And again, Sutter is going nowhere. The Beagle signing was literally done to facilitate a promotion for him.

You could well be right. If you are, I'll be back to bitter and twisted.

Have you seen any evidence of Sam Gagner being sat by this coach?

i think every coach but one.

gagner is down to two years left. he has a history of uneven play. he almost certainly starts the season but green can bench him if he is not playing the game they signed him to play.

the trick with all vets is you need a reason to bench. if they punch the clock it is hard to do.

heh, I haven't forgotten how a then Vrbata when he had some value pouted & sulked (destroying his trade deadline value) after being taken off the Sedin line for Sutter for a short period of time. Good thing rookie Horvat was a professional when shielding Sutter in some of those tough defensive assignments.

Sutter ain't going anywhere under this management crew. I think he'll likely be the next C of the team as well.

Even if they have to retain salary, one of the best things they could do is trade Gagner. If they are being honest in saying they want to give the young guys offensive opportunities, Gagner is no longer needed for his contributions on the powerplay, which was a strong rationale for signing him after his stint in Columbus.

So Loui Eriksson’s intense effort and productivity is keeping him in the line up over younger, faster, hungrier players...not the embarrassment of this management paying him 36 million....correct?

The Sporting News, ESPN, Sportsnet, have all named the Vancouver Canucks as a big loser in free agency.

Didn't most of those outlets praise the Ladd, Lucic, Eriksson, Alzner and or Backes signings?

And don't most loser teams in free agency redeem themselves pretty quickly?

Haha. Well deserved.

What amazes is me is management believes the d corps is fine. That's where they should have put their effort into. Then again, they put money into Gudbranson, Del Zotto and Pouliot.

Not to mention the lost the Sedins and Vanek and they replace them with fourth liners. Granted, some of that offensive production can be helped with the younger guys but they signed three players taking up spots.

gagner can be bought out at the end of the year if necessary.

erikkson has 5 years of term left. they cannot get into a pissing contest with him.

Gotta clear the junk out first. We have 4 alleged top 6 LHD and 3 RHD, plus rookies chomping at the bit to break in. Move a few players out, then we can talk about finding an improvement.

Just like our top 9 forwards...
