This team has to re-sign both Beckham and Collins, with Eli still on the books. Paying a premium price for a running back doesn’t help any of that.

If Eli is as bad as everyone here believes, and Webb isn’t the QB of the future, then the Giants will be right back at the podium early again next year.

Which is to say nothing about the possibility of Beckham being moved if everything goes to hell in a hand basket.

But Barkley makes them a Super Bowl contender so I’ve heard.

Yeah, not even close lol we still have plenty of holes, and will likely be picking around here again. a

At the end of the day, if you think one of the 3 QBs taken after him was a franchise type guy, then yeah, we f***ed up. I dont think any of them were, and thats why I'm fine with Barkley.

I maintain this is an instant gratification pick, one that could artificially inflate the Giants win total and put them in mediocrity for the next few years...the worst place to be in professional sports.

Admittedly, the QBs on the board concerned me more than a potential franchise QB should. If one of them becomes a franchise player, than yeah, it’s going to be a miss.

But I don’t take that as being more of a given than Barkley being the best pure player available and Webb being any less of a future starter than he was a year ago — regardless of whether the Giants screwed up an opportunity to look at him.

Agreed. I dont think you can slam the pick until you see what these QB's become. Darnold and Rosen were the only two viable options IMO. Only time will tell.

This is indeed the issue. At the same time, you can always trade up and grab a QB. This isn't the last chance for the Giants to get a QB. The issue here is everyone thinks that this is the only chance the Giants will have to get a franchise QB. Not only does this QB class have a lot of holes, ie there isn't a clear cut "the guy", but they are getting an extraordinarily talented player in Barkley. You guys are acting like this is just a top RB, this is one of the best RBs to come out in a long time, he is that good, he is that gifted, he is that talented. And he's a good character guy. I completely understand the argument wanting a QB here, but Barkley is just so f***ing good. If Barkley were 7/8 as good as he is, I'd agree with you, but he is that talented.

If Barkley is as advertised, the Minnesota Vikings disagree.

This is analogous to the Rangers drafting a goalie at 2 overall. Best for winning, questionable for team building in the current league.

If Barkley by himself is enough to raise the Giants to middle-of-the-road mediocrity, despite the presence of a supposedly on his last legs Eli Manning and a roster with enough holes to fill a doughnut shop, than that’s a hell of an impact for a rookie player that they supposedly should’ve passed on.

Not middle of the road, just not top of the the draft.

If there is a more obvious "the guy" why is said bad team trading that pick? What are the NYG giving up for that pick? It will be astronomical and arguably way more risky from a total investment perspective than gambling on one of these kids.

I guess I don’t view anything as being that black and white.

I think it all makes sense of you think Barkley is nothing more than marginally better, at best, than the other RB options, the other players on the board, or any of the QBs available.

If you don’t, and you think Barkley is potentially a player who comes along every 15 years or so, then it gets more complicated. In this case, the Giants seem to feel the latter.

But it’s certainly a risk. No question.

If we’re looking at a hockey analogy, it’s probably closer to whether you think the Rangers are taking Roberto Luongo in 1997, or Rick DiPietro in 2000.

Baltimore took a 24 year old with a 1st rounder? Lol wow. That's awful unless the guy's unquestionably the best receiver in the draft class.

So in other words, potentially in a position to grab someone like Allen at 7 or Rosen at 10?
This was a really strong year for qb's its really rare to see 4 in the top 10. Next year is supposedly not that strong in terms of qb's, no one really getting tons of hype.

Seemed to be a lot of red flags and uncertainty for being such a strong year for QBs, and that’s going back a while now.

I get the whole value of RB as the 2nd pick stuff. I get the whole trading down stuff. It’s the whole franchise QB stuff I am unsure of.

Even if the team traded down, I’m still not sure they would’ve gone with a QB.

I would have been content to trade down and take Nelson and get additional picks.

Remember the years of Dave Brown, Danny Kanell and Kent Graham? Yeah, those were fun.

And maybe that’s the risk if Davis isn’t the guy some think he is, or if the concerns about the QBs in this draft prove to be unfounded.

But I’m not sure I take that as being a given. At least not to the extent that some do.
