The narrative changed when a bad crop of running backs came through the first round and then nobody put a "premium" on the position anymore. But that doesnt mean you cant take a guy that high. It just needs to be the right guy, which I think Barkley is.
None of the analysts loved these QB's. They all had red flags - but analysts know they go first, so they have to find the good in them, and sell fans on why they "could" be the guy. Fans of bad teams stick around because these guys get hyped up for weeks on end. "This is our year. We get the guy that can change our franchise". Three years later, they're a career backup like Sanchez, Geno, Bradford, etc.
