We could trade down and add an extra 3rd rounder though!

lol

Dorion says that the 2nd round pick we traded away doesn't matter because we'll just draft a better guy with our 6th than we would with our 2nd

Why are you lower than most on Zadina? Would like to hear your assessment of him.
I'm not low on Zadina, I think he'd be a fine pick at #3.

I have heard, through a few people I know, that some teams scout(s) aren't as gung-ho on him compared to earlier in the season. Whether that be due to him, or due to other guys impressing, I do not know.

Dobson is the talk out of the Q since 2018 started.

Dahlin busts. Gabby, Bobby and Alex score less than 30 goals combined in the duration of their contracts. 6th becomes next Alffy.

Are there comparables to Dahlin, Zadina and Svechnikov? Who do they remind you of?

Niklas Lidstrom compared Dahlin to Brian Leetch

“I instantly thought of is Brian Leetch and his skating, especially during his years with the (New York) Rangers, he also had the courage to skate with the puck, use his skating and take advantage of the space when he had the chance…''

Svechnikov highlights sort of reminds me of Tarasenko and I haven't seen anything of Zadina outside of the World Juniors to make a comparison.

Personally though I'm not a fan of comparables as most of the time it sets unfair expectations for kids that haven't played in the league yet. But maybe that's just me.

Dahlin plays the right side in the SHL...

Wolanin Karlsson
Chabot Dahlin
Boro Ceci
Harpur

Interesting. I had assumed he played the left side because of his shot. Does he play RD out of necessity because of a lack of depth for his Swedish team?

Im also trying to recall which side he played at the WJC

Yeah, I know what you mean. I guess I just meant who does their playing style remind people of, but as soon as you start throwing out names, people expect that player to be just as good as the player they are being compared to.

I like Zadina but I'd be so much more excited for him if he was a bit faster.

As of now he doesn't have the top speed or acceleration to create separation.

Seems to me there's a big gap after the top 2. Would it be wise to trade down if we end up with pick #3 or lower?

He can play either side.

Anyone we should be targeting with Pittsburgh's 1st?

Also, for those who have studied the draft more than me, is there a possibility the team looks to trade down from Pittsburgh's pick and re-coup a 2nd and 3rd? I have no idea where the drop-off is this year, but I love the idea of moving back into the 2nd if it means adding more draft picks. We have a great track record in the middle rounds lately and would love to give our scouts more ammo.
I'm a big fan of Lundestrom, am hoping Pitts drops down a spot or two and we can get him.

My worry is we end up at 2, the scouts clearly have Svechnikov as their 2nd best player and they don't/aren't allowed to take him cause of the Russian factor. I spoke to some guys in hockey ops with the team back in January and basically told me they wouldn't be allowed to take him, also mentioned the team was high on Tkachuk who knows if that's changed though.

Calling bs on that.

Dorion himself has been in house to watch Svechnikov multiple times, they tried to trade up for Sergachev, and Svechnikovs brother was on their short list in 2015.

It's basically another 2011 where we have to worry about 4-6 guys, with most of them in the same tier.

Instead of:
RNH
Landeskog
Huberdeau
Larson
Strome
Zibannejad
Hamilton
Couturier

We have:
Dahlin
Svechnikov
Zadina
Dobson
Tkachuk
Wahlstrom
Bouchard
Boqvist
Hughes

The tier of guys we "likely" choose from is bigger than 2011, there are 6/7 guys who can make a case for any pick after #2, and then guys like Kotkaniemi/Farabee who may hop into the mix.

Just relating what I was told at the time, and until we actually draft a Russian I'm not going to discount what I was told. We last drafted a Russian in 2007... and saying we tried to trade up for Sergachev again we didn't. Ottawa Senators Draft History at hockeydb.com

As long as we don't Sam Bennett this pick I'll be happy. If we draft Svechnikov I'll be really happy.
