These refs need to retire already or get lasik. Don't know how all four officials missed it and tighten up the damn rules already. The tweet above is embarrassingly accurate.

Imagine some of the greatest moments in the past being subject to a review before a determination is made if the goal is legal or not. Just kill the excitement of an OT winner with a review.

Ok, see, last night, this is why there's no good answer. Either in the moment excitement is sacrificed for the greater good, or they increasingly (try to) get every little detail correct. For penalties too, not just non-penalty calls like last night. Go back to Gilmour/Gretzky. That Gretzky soon after the missed call scored the OT game winner, which allowed him to go on to have what he calls the best game of his career in Game 7, one of the great games in the league, should not have happened. At least not the way it did.

There's too much review, and at the same time, there's not enough review.

not a happy hockey fan:

He's right. I don't buy that all 4 refs missed it, I don't think the whoever did see it, had the stones to overfull a GWG in OT.

No way all 4 missed it, it was right where the action was, not in another area on the ice.

How can Bettman be expected that his NHL will be respected when the officiating is abysmal .

Embarrassing as a long time fan...

Olbermann is an idiot (as usual). The NHL has fallen behind because the NBA because of officiating and lack of control by the commish?

Does Keith not remember the 2002 WCF in the NBA? I mean it was only the most blatant case of officials deciding the result of a game/series in NA sports in any of our lifetimes. Rogue officials and/or the league itself literally took a title from one team and handed it to another.

I also do find it funny how certain Rams fans refused to blame the refs in the NFL for screwing over the Saints but are all over this. I guess the stupid cliches like “they still had a chance in OT” or “don’t put it in the refs hands” only applies when it benefits a team you like.

It’s unfortunate what happened to the Saints, Knights and now Blues but atleast it will hopefully bring about the changes needed. The NFL has already come to it’s senses and hopefully the NHL does as well. Insane that in 2019 plays like these still happen.

It's amazing how inept the refs were. They just decided the entire game with a blown call.

Yes they did and the other blown call, the missed call on Perron for Delay of the game. Perron scored 2 goals just after that. If he's in the box, things might have turned out different. Also, the Blues kept icing the puck before SJ tied it and missed some empty nets.
So they had a hand in their own fate as well.

I didn't watch the game but I was at the gym and one of the TVs had game highlights with no sound. And even I could clearly see the hand pass.

Refs were in position and each one of them had their view obstructed. It is garbage that that goal cannot be reviewed, especially in the playoffs. I do not fault the refs but the league. Both teams knew the goal should count (the sharks were hesitant to leave the ice), the refs had to have known they missed it, but they could not do anything about it.

I do not see how anyone who is not a die hard Sharks fan could be cheering for them to continue on.

Obviously, the NHL needs Silicon Valley in the Stanley Cup Final. :)

The hand pass should be a call that can be reviewed when it leads directly to a goal.

What's the point of having Toronto watch the games if they can't review each and every play?

It's beyond ridiculous.

Some things are just beyond stupid, like having an ump call balls and strikes when the technology to get the call right 100% of the time is available. The sports leagues have been insanely slow to make the switch to more video reviews. I think it's because the NFL and NHL tried doing it a couple decades ago when the technology wasn't what it was today and they have been hesitant to go back to it, even though it's much better now.

Either go all-in on reviews or just don't use it at all.

I'd prefer 'not at all' for sure if they can't review things that are common sense review but leave the offside review in the game.

What's the point of having Toronto watch the games if they can't review each and every play?

Bush league rule. This is the NHL's defense of what happened:

NHL playoffs 2019: League confirms Sharks' hand pass leading to game-winning goal is non-reviewable

NHL series director Kay Whitmore commented on the play after the game with The Athletic. Here is the exchange:
"Was it a hand pass?"
"It's a non-reviewable play," Whitmore said.
"Did any of the officials see it?"
"What they told me? It's a non-reviewable play. You can read between the lines. You can figure out what you want. You watched the video. But it's just non-reviewable. I know that sounds like a cop-out answer, but that's the truth," Whitmore said.
"Any leeway on Toronto's part to step in?"
"If there was, then you answered your (question). The way the rules are written, any chance there is to review, everything that's reviewable. But as the rules currently stand, the play is non-reviewable," Whitmore said.
"Should this be a reviewable play?"
"There's a group of people that will make that decision at some point," Whitmore said.

And the NHL's asinine rule , which is embarrassing. Somebody actually thinks that makes sense...unreal...

"Plays of this nature are not reviewable," the NHL said in a statement, via ESPN. "A hand pass that goes into the net can be reviewed but a hand pass between teammates cannot be reviewed."
