Rumor: 2018-19 Kings News/Rumors/Tidbits

Looking at the trade board and the Voynov threads, I think the Kings should trade Voynov to the Isles for futures. Then after the season should Phaneuf prove his top 4 performance last season was no fluke, trade Phaneuf and those futures back to the Isles as a cap dump.

The kings have to trade a mid level contract due to the cap crunch from RFAs Iafallo, Kempe, Rempal, and Brickley. (15 contracts for $74.1+ million without them) Defense has the log jam with Clague and Moverare getting NHL ready soon. trading a forward just opens up another hole at forward. Doughty's extension comes from the annual cap increase, Greene's buyout coming off, and thompson expiring and being replaced by a $1 million player.

Voynov's presence may also help the Isles land Panarin since he's Russian. The Russians on the bolts are recruiting him so it's not out of the question. Panarin likes New York.

Should the Isles sign Panarin, they get their elite forward to replace JT. They get a decent remade defense. High picks from tanking this season. All for 0 assets out.

Not so much that first season back, although he was ok, but in the next 3 he was really good. Not pre-Pittsburgh Robitaille, but pretty damn good for early to mid 30's Robitaille.

Still enjoy that 97-98 team though. First time back in the playoffs since 93. Finished 5th in the West. Even Tsyplakov was good. Signed Galley, got Robitaille back, got Stumpel a day later. Not to get ahead of ourselves.

Like you said, not the Luc of old, but he went on to have four more 30+ goal seasons in his 30s and helped bring the Kings back to prominence, leading the team in scoring in '99 and '00 and finishing one point behind the team leader, Ziggy Palffy, in '01.

Taylor righted the ship for a while. Also, Glen Murray finally became a legit scoring threat during this time (whenever he was healthy), and Yanic Perreault also had a hell of a season, until the following year when Larry Robinson felt like Perreault wasn't physical enough and so the Kings dealt him to Toronto in exchange for Jason Podollan. I only remember Podollan for one thing, and that's having his ass beaten by Jamal Mayers in the last regular season game played at The Forum.

And here's that Stumpel trade that came a day later, with another blurb at the end of the linked article on the Kings still being in the hunt for Pavel Bure.

That was a fun off-season with the Kings drafting the highly touted Olli Jokinen back in June, someone who was hyped to be a future franchise center. Before message boards we had newsgroups, and I recall discussion at the time had the Kings discussing a potential trade for Jaromir Jagr.

The Kings were chasing a star to open up their new building in '99 so it was apparent they were trying to make a big splash. They were then linked to Bure, who'd wind up in Florida, and then Theo Fleury, who refused to sign a contract extension. Rumor was that a trade was already agreed upon with the Kings sending Yanic Perreault and an early draft pick to the Flames for Fleury, on the condition he'd sign with the Kings. So that deal fell apart, the Flames dealt Fleury to the Avs, and in the off-season he'd go on to sign with the Rangers.

The Kings were also linked to Palffy trade rumors going back to '98, when he staged his holdout with the frugal Islanders. Ziggy would miss half of the season that year, but upon his return he would maintain a point per game pace, scoring 50 points in 50 games, and the Kings finally landed their superstar after a lot of back-and-forth with the Isles, sprinkled in with some league office interference.

Not really a current tidbit, but I was finally able to watch the Patrik Elias retirement special on NHL Network. Elias mentioned that when he was a UFA in 2006, the Devils told him up front that they didn't think they'd be able to afford him. Elias himself then said that he was deciding between the Kings and Rangers, but ended up going back to the Devils at a slight discount.

Still can't believe Bettman stuck his nose into the deal and told the Kings there wasn't enough going back to the Isles and they had to add Jokinen to complete it. Can you imagine him telling NJ that Larson wasn't enough to make the trade for Hall and they had to throw in their top prospect too?

"The NHL wouldn't approve the deal because the Islanders would be giving up two regulars in Palffy and Smolinski for players who would probably not be on their roster next season."

If Toffoli isn’t visibly exercising in pictures, or at least looking sad, he’s not taking his time off this ummer seriously.

I wonder if this was before or after the Kings signed Demitra. I think the Kings were still trying to lock up Ziggy as well before he went to Pittsburgh.

This would have been some time after July 1, 2006 so Demitra was already moved for O'Sullivan/Lewis a week before. Elias had missed half of the 2005-06 season after getting Hep A from some contaminated meal while playing in Russia during the lockout. At least early on, doctors were worried about whether Elias would recuperate and be able to play. Would have been interesting if Lombardi was hypothetically slotting Elias as a center.

That's interesting to hear, because if I recall it was either Blake or Robitaille said that it never got to that point. Is this just a case of an agent trying to protect his player saying he's too loyal to Montreal?

Saw that earlier and my first thought was that was Walsh trying to play the fanbase into pressuring MTL to just give him what he wants rather than forming a lynch mob calling for his exit.

MTL's mgmt is pretty incompetent. WRT to Blake, i think that's more that he's mum re: public detail. I appreciate that.
