He stole 6 mil from the Kings! At least he was man enough to admit he was terrible as a King and apologized.

I seem to remember he offered to give some of his salary back to the Kings, but of course they couldn't even respond to him.

He was just yet another sad, sad chapter in Kings hockey.

And it was all gong so well after his first game here!!

As I recall Roenick scored in his first game as a King against Dallas. It was all downhill from there.

I wouldn't call it a mistake by Taylor. He didn't give anything up. JR was free to acquire so DT took a chance on him. Had Palffy re-signed I don't think this move gets made.

Roenick made a fool of himself here. Dancing like an idiot. Showing up completely out of shape. Falling down constantly and blaming it on how his skates were sharpened.

Roenick and Hull were angry with the owners about the lockout and stuck it to the teams. They both spent the year golfing and drinking and showed up to camp fat, happy and rich. Still, how does Taylor pull the trigger on a deal without seeing the player first? This is a player who missed 20 games with a broken jaw, had a season off due to the lockout and the Kings and Taylor are buying sight unseen? Do you guys buy used cars sight unseen?

The Flyers knew exactly what the Kings were getting.

Oh, please. Hull was 41 years old and played 6 games or so before retiring. Hardly "stuck to the team". And what was the future considerations that we gave up for Roenick and a 3rd round pick? Taylor likely knew what we were getting and took on a 3rd round pick along with it. Been over 12 years and we are still complaining about this stuff. Give it a rest.

The Kings pretty much took a $6M cap dump off of Philly's hands and gave them the room to sign Peter Forsberg. And Roenick did say he was pissed off about the deal and admitted he came in with little motivation.

Nobody is complaining. It's called commenting. And it's August. Should we all just abandon any hockey talk until training camp?

The Kings got a free draft pick for taking Roenick off Philly's hands. Pretty sure DT knew what he was getting.

If the cap space isn't going to be used elsewhere, and you're getting a pick, why not do it?

Not sure how satisfied you’d be if you’re a team owner and spending close to $6M for a guy who can’t stay on his feet, is injury prone, and unproductive, and he was being advertised to the fans as a legit top line center, and was paid like one.

That failure is a big reason why Taylor was relieved as GM. I really liked him too and felt like he did a lot to turn things around after having to deal with the mess McMaster left behind, but he also created another bit of a mess himself that took Lombardi years to get right.

Do we know it wasn't ownership that wanted Roenick? I always assumed part of the reason he was acquired was to help sell tickets.

We basically bought a 3rd round pick and added some name recognition to the roster for 4.9M.

I think with or without this move DT still gets fired at the end of the season.

well, they did lose 1 year's salary...

and you're right, Roenick did admit publicly that he came to camp overweight to stick it to the owners. - although he didn't say this until the end of the season, when we knew he flat out sucked / equip mgr couldn't sharpen his skates juuuust right. what an *********!

My least favorite player on and especially off the ice. Meet him a few times. All were memorable; I wish they weren’t
I go to Tahoe every year for a convention a week after the annual celebrity tournament at Edgewood. Ask pit bosses, dealers, ect who the biggest douche bag is and the universal answer is JR.

True, Leiweke was still around and he was a bit of a carney. I think the number of moves made that ultimately didn’t workout for whatever reason mounted, and after missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, and the way the team crumbled in 2005-06, Taylor’s time was due.

The Roenick acquisition certainly didn’t help. That same off-season, Joe Nieuwendyk signed for less money and was a lot more productive. They let Straka go and he goes and scores 70 points in back-to-back years. Those are just a few examples of other “free” assets who were available to be signed for less than what JR was making at the time.

The Kings had a penchant for picking up these types, and Roenick didn’t change that impression whatsoever.

Sounds good to me. I stop by every few days, see if anything that matters happened and see myself out. Why remind ourselves of the bad old days? I've tried real hard to forget all that shit. Life's too short. :)

It’s more for entertainment and discussion, though I guess it also can be viewed as torture...

Hell there was a much talked about topic on the disastrous 2016 free agent signings that are all regrettable, or the fun excercise or making fun of Peter Chiarelli’s blockbuster blunders.

In the upcoming days, we’re approaching the 30th anniversary of a significant date in team history. The day the Kings acquired Mike Krushelnyski.

That's how I remember it, he was a casualty of Philly wanting to clear space for Forsberg.

To me, it's a history lesson (which is ironic since I usually suck at history).

I don't look at the bad times to feel sad anymore. I used to. But now I think of them as learning experiences. So we can evaluate other similar deals and have more objectivity and apply fair criticisms to actions and inaction.

When the Kings got Roenick I thought "lol free asset and we got a pick". I don't think it would be a good idea to take on a player under similar circumstances again.

That's my motive, personally: to learn

I agree, hindsight is 20/20 so why not use it. And it will be interesting in 10 years to see how Blakey did.
