What's not true? I pointed out a series of facts, you're cherry picking a hot stretch where the PP from March and onwards was the 9th best in the league. That doesn't change the fact that the PP also completely disappeared in the playoffs. So what are you saying that is not true? Is it not true that the teams I listed finished with a better PP success rate? Is it not true the Kings PP was horrendous in the playoffs? Is it not true that the Kings had the 18th ranked PP in the league?

Not true that the power play had no effect. It was a primary reason for the team making playoffs down the stretch.

It certainly helped, but I wouldn't say it was the primary reason. They had that one game where they netted 3 PP goals against Calgary. Overall, the offense got hot at that time. Brown and Kopitar had their four goal games, Carter had his hot streak. And then the playoffs came along...

I felt good about the first round because of how the power play was performing. I liked the match up of the Kings defense v. their offense and did not respect the Vegas defense so I figured the Kings would pot some power play goals.

Well, I got the defense part right. PP went cold and it was all over.

Kovalchuk's greatest asset is his shot. Kings have had nothing like that for a very long time. Teams will have to respect it so, even if it isn't Kovalchuk scoring, I imagine it would open up chances for others.

I like this graph but some of those Thrasher teams were just bad, so it's hard to put these numbers on him.

Yes cause one player dictates the teams PP avg.

Point is there's no correlation between Kovalchuk and having a good PP. There does seem to be a small correlation between having IK and giving up short handers. As Devils poster Brodeur pointed out he makes high risk plays on the PP.

Those Atlanta teams were mostly good offensively. They had plenty of offensively talented players most of the time. When Kovalchuk left Atlanta in 09/10 their PP actually improved the following year.

I generally like the Kovalchuk signing. I am excited to see what he'll do here but there are concerns. People keep bringing up the PP as one of the main reasons for having him, but I'm more interested in what he'll do at even strength.

The Kings PP is not the problem. The PP is average. Kovalchuk probably isn't going to improve the PP.

Go look at the NHL teams Kovalchuk played for. How good were their PP's?

It's been a week since we signed the guy and we're still miles away from the start of the season.

Any idea on how much longer are you going to continue this wonderful prediction? (I've got to plan my summer accordingly)

I haven't made any prediction.

Kovalchuk has also never been on a team that had Kopitar, Doughty and Quick or a locker room full of 2 time champions. He doesn't have to be the guy here, let the guy play before we sell him down the river. The GM went out and got a former first overall draft pick, probably the most talented player since Palffy and most importantly Kovalchuk chose to play here. These things haven't happened often in Kings history.

We all know Kovalchuk only scores in blowouts....

IK is a stud. He played with some pretty good talent in Russia, but he is used to being the best player on the team. Even at 35, I think he will be able to score without issue. His shot is pretty top notch. He is a serious upgrade to our top line.

To be fair Marc Savard was a great enabler for him and prime Hossa or Heatley were phenomenal forwards as well. Definitely next to nothing on the back end or in goal though.

Interesting insight from Brad Richards when he was a UFA and how he came down to choosing between LA and NY.

One of the more compelling offers he received was from the Los Angeles Kings, in which the team used Wayne Gretzky and Kobe Bryant to help out in the pitch.

“They tried to make it interesting. They tried to find out about you and tried to guide their pitch to your interests.”

According to Richards, Kobe showed Richards a video on the Lakers winning championships. The Rangers did the same thing by showing the Prince Edward Island native footage of the 1994 Stanley Cup parade, and special messages from New York-based actors.

“There were four teams that were really in it, and I decided between L.A. and New York. They both had great offers and great teams. L.A. ended up winning two cups, so maybe I chose wrong. But I’m very happy that I chose New York: I met my wife here, and we started our family here. I have no regrets – those are such decisions. You don’t know what was about to happen.”

Richards and the Rangers lost to the Kings in the 2014 Stanley Cup Final.
