Looking at faceoff wins are good in small samples. Like this.

Doesn't look like he'll get an assist though. Three SWE players touched the puck after him.

Sean Day wins it for Sweden.

JK that's an exxageration. He could have used a bit more awareness there, but it's not brutal.

I think whoever collided with the SWE player right in front of Woll lost USA the game. Completely changed Woll's tracking of the puck.

Watched the 1st period on VOD and will catch up with the other two tomorrow. But on that highlight, Day is screwed being a LHD on the right side. What can he do but flip it up the boards?

Some thoughts from the first, Andersson played a really solid period. Is he the captain for Sweden? Didn't see any letters, but he was chatting with the ref for Sweden. It seemed like he was killing it in the dot, really good on FOs. He centered Petersson and Lundestrom and was definitely the best player on that line. Petersson need to step it up at this level, he is a high pick and should do more. Haven't really gotten it done yet at the international level. Lias is very very determined and focused on the ice, making so many gritty and smart plays. He is really strong on his skates and sent a few Americans flying when going into shoulder to shoulder battles. On his best play offensively he rushed up the ice on the right side and served Petersson on a 2 on 1 who didn't do much, but it was a good play by Lias.

Day didn't stick out much, don't look like he is making team USA. Its early, extremely early, but I just got the feeling that other players on the US looked a little better. Krys is a very good player, think Chicago got a bit of a steal there.

Gettinger was OK, he is a real project but all he can do is play his style and hopefully he can be that type that isn't a star at any level, but can play his game at all levels so to speak. Win the board battles, make the smart plays, and so forth.

Liljegren was really sick for Sweden in the first. Where in gods name did the talk about him lacking hockey sense come from lol? The kid is so smart. Toronto definitely got a steal there.

I love Dahlin and Svechnikov is very good, and the race for No 1 could end up being between those two. But I would take Tkachuk over Svechnikov right now. Think he is underrated. Throwback PF, very good player. But I need to see Svech more this season, just my take right now.

This stuff happens every draft. Remember Chychrun?

Really reactive assessments by NHL teams to let him fall that far in the draft. Will result in a stacked team to begin with like the Leafs getting a 1D in a few seasons.

Liljegren was 2nd best in this draft on my draft list.

I didn't see much of Chychrun, lost interest there for a while when we didn't have any 1st rounders, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Think also a lot of it comes down to people filling blanks by guessing. TL could definitely become a D in the Rafalski/Boyle/Shattenkirk mold, and in the typical weak draft getting a player like that is very good.

I thought so too looking at the GIF, but watching the a better feed from hockeytv I am fairly certain its Lias and not the LW that swaps that puck back to Rasmus. The puck is already tipped back when the LW swings for it.

Some random thoughts I posted at the main board.

Timothy Liljegren had a sick game for Sweden. Looking like a(nother) steal by TML.

Dahlin made some amazing hits and showed some sick skating ability.

Dooghie was great for the US, can he make it despite his size? I was impressed.

People talk about Dahlin vs Svechnikov, I think Tkachuck will close the gap between at least him and Svech. Those bros can play.

I thought Pettersson was kind of weak for Sweden, again, in international hockey. Just don't get enough space on the ice. Lias Andersson was really clutch at center.

I like Krys, think Chicago got a bit of a steal there. I also like Boston's center pick, is it Petrie? Petric?

Looking a bit more closely at Sweden, I maybe lack a bit of a top end ability this year from them, at the same time they have that very good depth and I am just impressed with how well they solve many situations on the ice. The Swedish program is still pretty hot.

Dhooghe is incredible, he has to make it, so much fun. He's like Zuccarello on speed.

Pettersson was injured, didn't play after the 1st period? And i don't get the "again" because he's usually very good in international hockey.
He had 9 points in 8 games for U20 last season if you exclude WJC, season before that he was excellent for U18 and was over PPG at U18 WJC.

If you mean WJC then i don't agree, he was good at WJC, just had 0 puck luck at all, hit like 2-3 posts and his linemates missed open chances he created.

I don't like Krys much at all, and i guess you mean Trent Frederic? He's a tank, should be a solid middle-6 C in the future.

One thing i really like about this Swedish team is that they don't have any pylon in there, Sweden usually has like 2-3 "defensively minded" pylons that hold the team back. Unless Ginning makes the team we won't have any of those, only mobile (atleast pretty mobile) puck movers, i really like that. I really hope Själin and Walfridsson are ahead of Ginning if they feel like they need to add someone "defensive" to the team, they can both skate circles around Ginning who really is a pylon imo. Most of this is because the 98 class of D-men is really weak, Cederholm is like the closest and he's bad.

Who the the USA player that steamrolled the SWE guy right in front of Woll?

You want to talk about brutal? That was it. Totally broke Woll's puck tracking and let the puck go past him and into the net.

Day's not the brightest of players and occasionally goes really soft. That's a mistake that you see 12 yearolds make in EASHL.

Fitness and hockey sense are the factors holding him back. That's a guy that needs a Torts like coach to whip him into shape.

Back to juniors for another year most likely.

lol the whole "fitness" thing is going to dog him forever even if he does more work than anyone else people are still going to remember that being a knock on him when he was a kid and call him fat

that wasn't a great play by him but he was also likely expecting winger support on the wall as it's also a pretty common play to move it back up to the winger that sits there. I guess the complaint is that his teammate was right there (but not really in a position to move the puck to) so he shouldn't have pushed it that far back up the boards

Day moved up to the second pairing. Also looks like USA Blue is going with 5 D today?

Getts still on the fourth line.

In that situation with little time left and no real good options to move it to--IMO it would have been smarter to kick it back into the corner and try to pin the puck to the boards below the goal line. He's a huge guy--no one was likely to steamroller him. A couple three seconds and his teammates have time to adjust.

Good game from ours boys. Getts with a goal and 3 SOG, Day with 1 SOG.

Now let's watch Andersson carry the SWE forwards to victory.
