GDT: 2017 World Junior Summer Showcase

Good first by Lias. I love a lot about his game. For him to take another step though, I would love to see him get just a little bit more explosive in his skating.

Lias just had a nice entry on the PP before 4-3, might have the secondary assist depending if the puck went off the Swede or the US player in front.

#3OA next year?

Is the league ready for a 5'9 D to be 3OA? Color me skeptical that he can be as effective in the last 4th of the ice in the NHL as he is in Juniors. The best offensive Ds in the NHL, ie Burns and Karlsson, creates the most from distance. Hard shots. Then some offense comes from close in, but the majority is still from far out.

Thinks he is amazing to watch and will have a good future in the NHL if he keeps developing, but the game is also different in the NHL than in juniors. At least right now, who knows where it will be in 5-10 years.

Its interesting to see so many midgets playing well out there right now. The US has plenty of really small kids on these two teams.

I thought Lias had a great 3rd. Should get a 2nd assist on Sweden's 3rd goal. Don't know if they will review it afterwards.

Overall, I like the pick. There is no doubt that he both have very very high potential as well as a lot of intangibles to use a word that maybe got a bit of a bad rep. I can't create gif's, but the play where he draw a penalty in the 1st shows how much skill he has. He turned up ice with the puck in his own end but faced really heavy pressure and turned back with the puck, lost the forechecker with a deke, then skated around two more forecheckers before he skated up ice before being tripped by one of the forwards he left behind. The key for his further development is definitely to be able to add a little bit more explosiveness and intensity in his skating. He skates really well, but he isn't always displaying blazing speed. I hope he might have that in him, in that case he could -- definitely -- become a top 15-20 No 1 center in this league. If he doesn't quite manage to become that much more explosive, his offensive potential might be more in the 40-50 pts mold.

In a sense Lias reminds me a lot of Patrice Bergeron. He was a kid who made it as an 18 y/o. But I am definitely leaning towards being in favor of not playing Lias in the NHL right away no matter how he does in Camp. Lias can still develop a lot in his game. Let him get that time.

I didn't see much of Chychrun, lost interest there for a while when we didn't have any 1st rounders, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Think also a lot of it comes down to people filling blanks by guessing. TL could definitely become a D in the Rafalski/Boyle/Shattenkirk mold, and in the typical weak draft getting a player like that is very good.

He reminds me of Subban with his already established power skating, shot, passing game. He has a reasonable chance to be a good defender, which is where the Subban comparison would come into play. Maybe OEL, if someone insists on comparing him to a Swede. Justin Faulk is another comp that might fit, although thats a non-Swedish one.

Dhooghe is incredible, he has to make it, so much fun. He's like Zuccarello on speed.

Pettersson was injured, didn't play after the 1st period? And i don't get the "again" because he's usually very good in international hockey.
He had 9 points in 8 games for U20 last season if you exclude WJC, season before that he was excellent for U18 and was over PPG at U18 WJC.

If you mean WJC then i don't agree, he was good at WJC, just had 0 puck luck at all, hit like 2-3 posts and his linemates missed open chances he created.

I don't like Krys much at all, and i guess you mean Trent Frederic? He's a tank, should be a solid middle-6 C in the future.

One thing i really like about this Swedish team is that they don't have any pylon in there, Sweden usually has like 2-3 "defensively minded" pylons that hold the team back. Unless Ginning makes the team we won't have any of those, only mobile (atleast pretty mobile) puck movers, i really like that. I really hope Själin and Walfridsson are ahead of Ginning if they feel like they need to add someone "defensive" to the team, they can both skate circles around Ginning who really is a pylon imo. Most of this is because the 98 class of D-men is really weak, Cederholm is like the closest and he's bad.

Agreed on Dhooghe was really hoping he'd get drafted this past year.

Dhooghe is like 5'3. There's a big difference between being 5'3 in the NHL and being 5'7. There are impact players in the NHL at 5'7, how many players in the NHL have even been shorter than 5'5?

Only Gerbe according to NHL.com. Although they have nearly a 1000 players with no height listed.

Think Dhooghe was listed at 5'4 now at the summer showcase, he's growing! :)

But seriously, he's playing against big guys and he's always noticeable in a good way out there, why are we so obsessed with size?
He's playing well, why isn't that enough?

Its not about being obsessed with size. If you are shorter than pretty much the minimum size to ever play in the NHL, you are going to have a hard time of making it. If Dhooghe was 6'0, he would've been a first round pick, but he's not. People doubt if 5'8 players can make it in the NHL. If you are 5'4, you have it even tougher. I think he should've been drafted, but I think everyone knows why he wasn't.

Yeah, he'll have a tough time getting through the pre conceived notions, but his on ice play isn't making anyone worry about his size right now.

Tobbe- From my point of view it comes down to this. If you are small you are small. Small and weak players don't win any physical battles, and it don't matter one bit in that sense if they are small and weak or extremely small and weak. So it's a flaw to be small and weak, but it don't matter much if you are small or extremely small in the physical game.

But very small players rarely has any kind of straight ahead speed. Simple physics, you need longer legs to build up that top speed.

But, Dooghie seems to skate fairly well in terms of top end speed too. If he can do that, I don't see why he couldn't make it.

I am 6'3 myself, and playing juniors and 2-3rd tier hockey in Sweden you face a lot of players around 5'5 at least. I often thought they were the hardest to handle in 1 on 1 battles, very hard to get a hold of. But it's when it comes to keeping up with the play they struggle.

Short players need to have especially strong base, got to be "stocky" to create acceleration and don't get easily knocked off their feet. And even then we are talking 5'7 being bare minimum.

He should definitely have been drafted, surprised that many teams passed on him...

I get it in theory, but the fact is that Dhooghe is a good skater and he does win puck battles, so i don't see the issue right now.
Maybe he will have trouble when he turns pro, but maybe he won't?

Getts/Day against Canada-W today at 7pm and then it looks like USA will combine into one team starting tomorrow.

I haven't watched him overly closely, but would I have used a later pick to get him? Without any single doubt. He is already better than easily 5/7 of the drafted kids ever will become. I am a bit surprised he wasn't drafted. Like I get the "engine" problem for sure, I've so often seen these kids stand out and then when they come up towards the NHL they just don't quite keep up with/push the tempo. But first of all, the league has changed a ton. Hockey has changed a lot. There are many midgets out there doing well, and in the NHL there are so many smaller and especially lighter players. And like if Dooghie can fit, he could definitely become like an Cam Atkinson performer. Definitely worth at least a late pick.

Day is on the top pairing today. Has moved up a pairing each game.

Getts is on the second line!

Getts got another goal tonight. Only goal for USA-B.

Now I think the two split squads become one for the rest of the showcase, right?
