Or how bout in Day's case where he was behind one of the best defensive prospects in the world on his teams depth chart?

That's what I meant by usage. We discussed Day so much I don't get why it keeps getting forgotten that Sergachev was getting all prime offensive opportunities and about 30%-40% more ice time.

There's 120 minutes available for defensemen. Many teams have multiple good defensemen who play big minutes, its not always one player.

No, if he will not turn into a top pair defenseman it would be because how he process the game (toolbox).

I don't think the "if" exists. I don't think he can be a #1 defenseman. If he doesn't learn to process the game better defensively, I don't think he'll be more than like a John Moore #6D. If he does, maybe like a 3D.

Pretty much. And it would be disappointing (is in case of JM).

A 3rd round pick turning into John Moore would be far from disappointing.

Considering the probability of a player drafter at 81 overall to play 100 NHL games in his career is 23.8%*, Day becoming another John Moore who at 26 has played 366 NHL games and is a reliable 3rd pair NHL defenseman would be a massive success.

John Moore is a frustrating NHL player, but he is a legitimate NHL defenseman. Even if he is a bottom pair guy, Day becoming a 3rd pair guy who can play 2nd PP minutes would be a success.

Sure, but there's a limited amount of power play time, and if you want to look at his 30 something points and say it's bad for an offensive defenseman, you have to account for him getting no first unit power play time/almost no power play time at all because Serg was out there for almost the whole 2 minutes anyway. I don't realistically think he'll be a 1D, but I do think he'll be better than you're giving him credit for

I think I'm being plenty fair. I think he'll be somewhere between a 3-6D. Some don't even think he'll stick in the NHL. I just don't see 1D potential because I don't think 1D tools are there.

That is a sick pass by Lias, he sees EP heading up the boards on the other side of the ice with three finns between him and EP and still gets the puck to him. How many wouldn't even see EP and just fight to get over the redline and get the puck deep?

Low potential and unflashy player? Nonsense. Too much shouldn't be read into genes, but his dad was the Marty St Louis of the SHL. Neither Tkachuk sons or Domis kid are soft.

Day 100% has the tools to be a top pairing D or at the very least top 4. His issue is the toolbox and work ethic off the ice. The latter appears to have been addressed during the past season (Work ethic).

I'm not sure if people understand how insane a pass that is. The level of awareness and creativity on display there is crazy. Very MZA like play.

Can his shot really be described as 'hard and accurate'? I've only seen highlights of him with limited live viewings, so it's very possible that I haven't gotten the whole picture, but I've seen nothing that makes me think his shot is even above average.

It's a matter of opinion I guess. Day is able to get his shoots through on goal when his shooting lane is quite crowded and it looked pretty hard to me.

I saw the game. Sure perfectly executed pass from Lias. It happened in the 3rd period. To be honest otherwise he did not do much the whole game. Very average if not underwhelming.

I thought he was gassed late against Canada too, you remember the plays where the Canadian kid almost strapped him off the puck with the open net? They have played 5 games in what 8 days in July-August. Lias won the SHL with HV71 last season. Played fairly late. The team made a week trip afterwards to celebrate the gold. Probably got going a little late with his off-season training. I saw that another HV71 kid, Andreas Borgman, was a little worried about getting going as late as he did before going to Toronto.

I mean anything Ive seen the internet have to show on him says he should get a chance at playing with Grabner's speedy tendencies...who best balances the left side though? Do we have a LW that wants to grind to the net?

While it doesn't count, I think I'd be curious to see them try to make the preseason line up to look like this:
Kreider-Mika-Buch (I love every bit of that line, one line we don't need to worry esp about come playoff time with the way 20 & 93 looked when the chips were down)
Vesey/Nash-Hayes-Zucc
Nash/Vesey-Lias-Grabner
Miller-Desharnais-Fast

Hope Deangelo makes the D squad, because if he does, it'll mean he's effective, and if that guy is effective he'll be a bonafide game changer.

All off point...Lias..so far so perfect!

It could, very well be a fatigue, wasn't analyzing - just telling what I saw.

P.S. I liked Swedes' #28

I liked Day in Traverse last season and he has since shaped up and is by all accounts devoting himself.

However, when watching hockey in Europe for example -- I just think that so many Ds that are up for grabs has more to offer than compared to what I believe Day will become. Put the top 100 Ds outside the NHL up against each other, Day doesn't rank high in many areas. Not even in skating, Day is too heavy to be a well rounded skater. Although his straight ahead speed of course is great. Like -- although I've seen little of him -- I think Vince Pedrie is a D a bit more in my favor than Day. Not to mention Bereglazov.

But I hope I am wrong!

I think Day or Gettinger are very shaky for the WJC cut. After the end of the camp, I think Gettinger has a better chance to make it, and even then, he still might not make it. One WJC player out of Day, Gettinger and Reunanen would be a good accomplishment, given Chytil will also make it, and Andersson will, if he's not in the NHL.

Seeing Andersson he reminded me a little of in-his-prime Steve Rucchin.

His straight ahead speed is great, but he's also really good laterally and is strong on his skates. From his time in the OHL you can pull up plenty of videos of him going end to end while weeving through three or four guys. There's a lot more to his skating than the breakaway speed. And with him, it's not a matter of "he's a good skater for a big guy," which basically means he's an average skater. Day is just a good skater, period.

Whether that can translate to points at the NHL level remains to be seen.

Another point, I've seen people discuss John Moore in regards to Day and whether it would be a disappointment if that's what Day would become. In general, no, if our third round pick became a career NHL players with hundreds of games under his belt, that would be great. Absolute home run. At the same time, there'd be a tinge of disappointment because with the size, strength, skating and skills, you want Day to be more. He hasn't put it all together yet and may never, but you hope he can because then you have an impact player on your hands. John Moore wouldn't be terrible (again, absolute win in the sense of where he was picked), but if Day put it together he could be a much more impactful player.

The Rangers need Day to keep playing and developing that rover-like style. Byfuglien should be the guy he watches all the time. Buff skates well, and not just for a big guy.

You are right, I ment more like that he is a little clumsy skater in relation to the puck. He loses time in many situations fetching pucks, receiving passes etc.

I hope you guys are right on Day, I of course also see how he really sticks out in some areas, no doubt, but overall I am just not convinced. He is hard to evaluate in that sense and there could be a lot of things I don't see, but to be honest I wouldn't at all be surprised if I liked someone like Pedrie more after seeing him some more.

That was phenomenal . Took the hit to make the play and not one most people can make. Since watching him play recently it looks like the Rangers scouts may have done their due diligence . I can see the biggest debate coming up in September is whether this kid should be the 3c on this team . I hate rushing development but I'm leaning towards yes
