Or how bout in Day's case where he was behind one of the best defensive prospects in the world on his teams depth chart?
That's what I meant by usage. We discussed Day so much I don't get why it keeps getting forgotten that Sergachev was getting all prime offensive opportunities and about 30%-40% more ice time.
No, if he will not turn into a top pair defenseman it would be because how he process the game (toolbox).
Pretty much. And it would be disappointing (is in case of JM).
There's 120 minutes available for defensemen. Many teams have multiple good defensemen who play big minutes, its not always one player.
That is a sick pass by Lias, he sees EP heading up the boards on the other side of the ice with three finns between him and EP and still gets the puck to him. How many wouldn't even see EP and just fight to get over the redline and get the puck deep?
Low potential and unflashy player? Nonsense. Too much shouldn't be read into genes, but his dad was the Marty St Louis of the SHL. Neither Tkachuk sons or Domis kid are soft.
Can his shot really be described as 'hard and accurate'? I've only seen highlights of him with limited live viewings, so it's very possible that I haven't gotten the whole picture, but I've seen nothing that makes me think his shot is even above average.
I saw the game. Sure perfectly executed pass from Lias. It happened in the 3rd period. To be honest otherwise he did not do much the whole game. Very average if not underwhelming.

I thought he was gassed late against Canada too, you remember the plays where the Canadian kid almost strapped him off the puck with the open net? They have played 5 games in what 8 days in July-August. Lias won the SHL with HV71 last season. Played fairly late. The team made a week trip afterwards to celebrate the gold. Probably got going a little late with his off-season training. I saw that another HV71 kid, Andreas Borgman, was a little worried about getting going as late as he did before going to Toronto.
Seeing Andersson he reminded me a little of in-his-prime Steve Rucchin.
I liked Day in Traverse last season and he has since shaped up and is by all accounts devoting himself.
However, when watching hockey in Europe for example -- I just think that so many Ds that are up for grabs has more to offer than compared to what I believe Day will become. Put the top 100 Ds outside the NHL up against each other, Day doesn't rank high in many areas. Not even in skating, Day is too heavy to be a well rounded skater. Although his straight ahead speed of course is great. Like -- although I've seen little of him -- I think Vince Pedrie is a D a bit more in my favor than Day. Not to mention Bereglazov.
But I hope I am wrong!
His straight ahead speed is great, but he's also really good laterally and is strong on his skates. From his time in the OHL you can pull up plenty of videos of him going end to end while weeving through three or four guys. There's a lot more to his skating than the breakaway speed. And with him, it's not a matter of "he's a good skater for a big guy," which basically means he's an average skater. Day is just a good skater, period.
Whether that can translate to points at the NHL level remains to be seen.
Another point, I've seen people discuss John Moore in regards to Day and whether it would be a disappointment if that's what Day would become. In general, no, if our third round pick became a career NHL players with hundreds of games under his belt, that would be great. Absolute home run. At the same time, there'd be a tinge of disappointment because with the size, strength, skating and skills, you want Day to be more. He hasn't put it all together yet and may never, but you hope he can because then you have an impact player on your hands. John Moore wouldn't be terrible (again, absolute win in the sense of where he was picked), but if Day put it together he could be a much more impactful player.
