The Rangers are going to let Staal play his way out of the lineup and that might take a while. We should have bought him out. I would move Holden--not because I think he's all that bad and I think he's good value for his cap hit but because I think there are three younger D who are ready for the NHL. We'd be better off getting something for him as he's not likely to be around next year with his contract up and all these others waiting in the wings.

It will be a gradual thing because the same thing that has happened for the past 3-4 years will happen again.

Staal will play decently for the first 10-15 games of the season, and may even look good against some of the slower Western Conference teams. At about the 20 game marc (see what I did there?), he'll start to slip a bit and start making 5-6 unforced errors on a nightly basis. By January, the wheels fall off and he looks like hot garbage again. It's been like that every year since his own brother concussed him.

Liking the new boards...

As some of you know, I built my own boards and social network around d hockey not too long ago.. this is some solid framework.

I'll probably pick up on a passion project early next year, re-do the assets and build on a better framework.

Anyway; uncle Larry's forward lines sound correct.. especially if you look at it from a split squad perspective.

Letter looks like he's made the cut.. the speed, hustle, and rh shot. First game was awful, hut he kept grinding away. Kudos.

On LA, I thought he fatigued.. the skating legs.. they weren't there as much.. this guy's played a lot of hockey in consecutive months, and the higher level of play got to him. Looked banged up.

Kreids-Zib-Zuc
Vesey-Hayes-Miller
Nash-Chytil-Buch

As a top nine that's really good.

Add in

Grabner-Desharnais-Letteri (Fast)..

That's really good.

Nash-Chytil-Buch has me salivating.

I really didn't care for Letteri's game for most of the preseason, but I can see AV viewing him as a Fast stopgap. He's even right handed and can plug into that same role on the 4th line. Not as good as Fast but to hopefully hold the fort down. I think Letteri was getting a lot of PP time in preseason by virtue of being a trigger happy RH shot. Good for him he made the most of it and honestly, he did improve as preseason went on. I didn't think he had the motor or skating ability to be an NHL player, but maybe I was too quick to judge there.

I think Andersson starts the year in Hartford. He's not going back to Frolunda, when he came over here this season, I thought it seemed very much so like he and the Rangers both wanted him in NA this season. I say he starts in Hartford and who knows, maybe he gets called up mid season. I think anyone who is down on Andersson was placing ridiculous expectations on him. I'm fairly confident that Andersson will become Ryan O'Reilly 2.0 within a few seasons. Very similar player all around: skill set, hockey smarts, defensively responsible, can grind it out...hell, even their skating styles are similar.

Just because Chytil is looking like he can step in right now and Andersson looks like he may need some seasoning time doesn't mean that Andersson is a disappointment. He was just drafted, he could use some time. Chytil is bigger and more dynamic, but that doesn't mean that he'll even end up being better than Andersson. Andersson-Chytil has the potential to be our dynamic duo of the future, our version of Toews/Kane or Zetterberg/Datsyuk. Why anyone wants to assume Andersson projects as the next Oscar Lindberg is beyond me.

I think the D should be:

McD-Shatty
Skjei-Smith
Staal-DeAngelo
Holden

Give Pionk 1st pair all situation minutes in Hartford. Him and Tony D are both waiver exempt so if Tony D needs to go down and Pionk looks like he can come up then no harm there. Hopefully by mid-season one of Staal-Holden is moved and Pionk and Tony are both in the lineup. We'll see on that though. For now Tony D gets that spot are 3RD from me. What I don't want is to see Skjei paired with DeAngelo and Staal and Smith paired. Staal/Smith would almost be Staal/Holden.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Rangers grabbed a forward off waivers towards the end of training camp and/or move Holden for a forward.

Donnay? Noreau? Nicholls? St. Croix?---****, ****, **** and ****. But anyway I look at the ECHL as something of a graveyard for anybody who is not a goalie. I wouldn't put a 19 year old kid there. John Gilmour on the other hand......I have no issue with Day going back to Windsor. It's not like he's dominated the OHL yet.

Lias Andersson's been fine.

I would think that would be more likely after Chytil/Andersson get their 9 (assuming either or both do).

AV and Gorts read up on some HFboards opinions and Andersson got beheaded

Forget about Andersson, if Staal-Holden is actually a pairing to start the year then AV needs to be beheaded.

ADA has earned a spot in the starting six while Staal has shown he's completely washed up. But this is the NHL, where washed up vets get handed minutes because of "experience" (or salary).

I just hope Brooks is wrong in his speculation on this, which he probably is, so no reason to get worked up. It's just that the thought of Staal-Holden being a pairing again awakens demons in my head.

About media and how to get involved here on this forum. I`m not sure where to post this, but I can explain it here. If you`ve your favorite source sport journalist, newspaper or other viable sources - click on Media and go to twitter (click on more) - Copy link to tweet. And that link you can copy/past it here in Media (box/file) like this and click embed.

Finally, there are many here who have other sources which are interesting to read, and it`s much easier on this new forum to get involved and discuss sport articles and hockey related media material. I hope it help to understand this new forum with different codes. It`s early morning here - which remind myself to take my early morning swim, have a good day for sure.

Avery16- On Carey playing with Hayes and Kreider in College, thanks for the info! Didn't know that.

Did you see how thrilled Vesey was when he fed Carey for that tap in against Philly? I remember thinking something like wow they really like the guy.

It's 'nothing', but still it's one of those that might have an impact.

Interesting speculation from Brooks on Andersson going to the AHL. Normally that is very unusual, kids like him often are sent back to Europe. But the player always have a say on these things, and it can be noteworthy that Lias' dad, Niklas Andersson spent a ton of time in the minors and really took the long way to the NHL. Could have an impact, i.e. if his dad has a positive experience of developing in the minors:

Are there any other Euros that start in the AHL right away to compare to Lias? I know Pastrnak and Forsberg both got some AHL time in their rookie year. I'm leery of any of them spending any time in Hartford until they right the ship down there a bit. They're good on paper right now, which is a big improvement over last season.

New coach down there too. I would guess the org has faith in the guy they hired.

I'm just not sure what Lias could learn in Sweden that he can't learn in Hartford. Plus, they get to control his ice time, have him learn the system, let him adjust to the smaller ice. I think it makes sense.

if LA does or doesnt get his 9 games, fairly certain he won't return to sweden. everything hes said to date indicates to me that he's here to make the big club this year. this is a long season, with injuries and other drama, he's got a good chance to be the 1st call up that might never go back down.

going back to the SEL doesnt do much for him. go to hartford and earn a call up.

For now I see DeAngelo (or Pionk) as the 7th D. That's unfortunate but I expect that AV's going to start off by riding his veterans. DeAngelo (or Pionk) is going to have to make the most of their opportunities when they do get to play.

I think the Hartford team though is going to be much better this year. Well the team only has one direction it can go. Last year the team couldn't score goals and had an awful defense. This year both those areas should be much improved. Schneider is a legit 1st line player. Whitney, DeSalvo and Kosmachuk should help out and there's still a couple more additions to come. The defense probably Pionk, Graves, Bereglazov, Kampfer and Pedrie looks like a lot better group. I think Day winds up back in the OHL.
