I generally respect your posts, but I think you are dead wrong here. Brown was pursued heavily by USA Hockey and would have been a shoo-in for this team if healthy. He wasn't-and in a short, intense tournament would have been a liability. DeBrincat has been given every opportunity to be part of the program and has been a steady disappointment (internationally).

Agreed that Team USA hasn't hesitated to take CHL players in the past and Brown's injury had more to do with him getting cut than anything.

I don't agree with the Debrincat decision though. Kid is a gamer and is probably the best net front player available to the team.

Last cut will come soon, I assume. Who ya got? Ahcan? Ceccone? Krys? Gotta be one of those three, right?

How had Harper looked so far?
Tiny. Lol. He can't be more than 110lbs. Had a decent game. One of the better forwards
As for debrincat. I was at th game against the Swiss and he did absolutely nothing. I expected him to be one of the best out there.
Logan brown used his body and played well. Don't know why he was cut.
Clayton Keller. He was the real deal out there. Controlled a lot of the play.

He was so damn bad last year.

He was Team USA's Jake Virtanen. Constant penalties because he is so easy to bate.

Bob McKenzie noted that was a big knock on him at the draft was his temper.

If they don't score much, it won't be because he is not there. Just read the above posts, we all have watched him play outside the OHL in the tournament last year, summer camp, and from what we know about last night and camp he just hasn't stood out. A player like him is brought on this team to score, there is nothing else he could contribute as that is his style of game. And he hasn't done that.

5 games? He's literally been one of the most constant in the entire CHL since his first game.

None of this is true.

DeBrincat had been playing on the top line with Matthews and Tkachuk in camp leading up to the tournament, and he started the opening game of the tournament against Canada on that line. He couldn't have asked for better linemates, and he rewarded the staff by getting himself kicked out of that game for spearing near the end of the 1st period. Even after that, he was then put back on the top line in the next game against Sweden until his injury near the end of the 1st period. He proceeded to miss the next two games, and returned as the extra forward in the final three games of the tournament.

So, to recap:
  • He started the tournament on the top line with two of the tournament's top players.
  • He kept his top line spot after his stupidity against Canada, and even after the top line looked so much better without him on it in that game.
  • He wasn't sent back to Erie after his injury, but he never regained his top line spot at the WJC after it.

Dude, you're talking about 1 week here.

As a Leafs fan I'm interested in how Woll is doing. A shutout last night, I see. What are his chances in the goaltending competition?

I'm hoping he gets the nod against Canada on New Years Eve. He grew up just a few miles from me and went to the same grade school as my son. Kid has been focused on an NHL career since he was like 11 years old and is having a heck of a year as a freshmen at Boston College. I can't wait to see him play for the Leafs.

Glad for Ahcan...kid put in the work.

Ditto. Good for Ahcan.

And good for USA Hockey and Motzko. Its not the move I would've made, but I certainly respect it. They gave a hardworking kid a chance and weren't afraid to cut a guy who has a better resume. Hope it works out.

Glad they cut Krys and not one of Fitzgerald or Ahcan. It's unfortunate, but Krys just isn't a quality player at this level.

Can anyone think of examples of a player making the team, then not making it, then making it again like Krys could potentially do next year?

According to USA Hockey, there's been three players that have played in the WJC as a 17 year old and 19 year old, but not as an 18 year old:

  • Brownschidle, Jack (1977,1979)
  • Burt, Adam (1987,1989)
  • Gleason, Tim (2001,2003)
USAH's Brownschidle entries are in error as far as I can tell. For starters, Brownschidle was born in 1955, so he was too old to have played in the WJC in those years, and he played in the World Championships in 1979.

orangeandblack is correct on Gleason. He turned down his invite as an 18 year old because he was unhappy with his lack of playing time as a 17 year old.

No idea on why Burt wasn't there in '88, but he's the only player that possibly could fit the mold you're after for Team USA at the WJC.

Interesting, thanks for digging that up.
