Reading the last few posts of this thread... I had to do a double take and check if I've accidentally clicked the wrong tab and ended up reading the Ilta-Sanomat comment section.

But nope, it's HFBoards after all. Carry on guys.

Can you remind me the difference other than language? :D

I love it how it's May and the supposed hardcore hockey-yanars suddenly find their inner Karelia-capper. :D

Everyone should find their inner Kareliacapper, that's what it's all about. Once in a year the whole nation is behind the common cause, the spring is coming, sun is shining....bars are full of people.

Today it finally starts. Let's go!

Look at all these people whining that pulju is benched. Boo hoo. Pulju played three games with aho and filppula and he was completely useless and bad. Pulju does not deserve to play. Period.

What's a Kareliacapper? I clearly havent been to Finland enough lately
Also known as a "Karjala Cap" or "karjalalippis" in original Finnish.

It's a (usually derogatory) term describing the kind of hockey "fan" who only crawls out of the woods when a major tournament is on, yet pretends to know the game better than anyone - especially the moron who happens to be currently coaching the team.

Typical clothing consists of a cap with a beer company logo and "Peltonen #16" jersey, bought back in '96.

Favorite player: VIILLeee PeeLLLTOONEN! Ville Peltonen! VIILLeee PeeLLLTOONEN... (2nd favorite player: Mikael Granlund)

Dislikes:
-the current Head Coach
-Lasse Kukkonen
-Any team with Lasse Kukkonen on it (because it has to have a garbage defense)
-Any team with Lasse Kukkonen NOT on it (because it probably has even worse defense)

Oh my days haha, that's just so true. But I guess this behaviour is common in a lot of countries when there's a bigger tournament for the no 1 sport. I live in Sweden for example and people over here are saying things just like that when the NT in football are playing in the euros or worlds.

Let's face it: Kukkonen is not really bad, he is jut as good as Vitunmäki as a coach...who should go to coach the turkish or the jamaican team

And remember THIS: Tappara >>> Karpat ...

More than else, I was trying to refer to the IIHF ice-hockey -minded hockey followers who voice hockey opinions that are

1) strong,
2) definite, and
3) likely evokes massive by-shame (because Finland obviously) in everyone who are forced to read or hear them,

but your definition is accurate. Disturbingly accurate.

Again not a single player did anything in those games.
Aho who's our best player really did nothing crazy either, only on powerplay he had some good looks as a playmaker.

I can't remember when Finnish team has looked this bad.

For the record: When I said "current" Head Coach, I didn't mean specifically Marjamäki. I meant whoever it is at any given moment. Karelia Cappers will always think the previous one was better. And they'll always wait eagerly for the next one... only to start hating him when he doesn't pick their favorite players or comes up with lines they don't 100% agree with.

Not necessarily, Westerlund or Jukka Jalonen did not have so many critics... for instance in Sochi14, I think most of us understood that we went with our better possible team at that moment

J.Jalonen only got popular after 2011. Before that people were calling for his head just like any other coach - despite eagerly waiting to see what he can get done after his name was first announced. So that's typical Karelia Capper fickleness right there.

And most folks were happy to be rid of Erkka after the 2014 WHC with that ultra-nihilistic team selection.

Olympic teams are rarely criticized, because they pretty much pick themselves. We don't usually have enough NHLers to have room for any snubs that cause controversies. The 2010 Jokisgate was a rare exception.

I can remember that there was lot of critic towards Westerlund when he first took the job in 2004-2005 after Summanen was kicked out. 2005 WHC´s were pretty disapointing.

And Jalonen... before the 2011. There was the ridiculous Jokinen issue (I would have selected Jokinen, but I understood why Jalonen left him out of the team). Selänne slightly critisized the playing system even during the tournament and people seemed to agree.

I think it was only two games with them, but Puljujärvi was given fair chance. If he hasn´t shown anything better in practices there is no reason to play him. There is weird Nuori Suomi tone in these discussions right now. Let´s play the young guy that he doesn´t feel bad.

Still I hope he will work hard and earn a chance to play in this tournament. I would love to see a player who has the potential to become real difference maker in these games in future.

I must say, all the Marjamäki hate seems like typical Karelia Capper mass hysteria to me.

What exactly are his results? In a tournament that only featured the Big Six national teams we were 6th among them (no one should hold the joke teams against his record, obviously) - which, well, is pretty much where we were ranked before that tournament. And after that, we've lost a bunch of EHT games no one gives a rat's backside about. And even then, we haven't lost all of them.

Thus far, Late has not been a great success, but he has not been a major failure either. In fact, he has pretty much coached our NT to spec. Which may, arguably, not be cutting it since we have a reputation as constant overachievers.

But what does that spell for this tournament? An easy QF spot, as usual, and then a probable exit. But of course, the QF is still a best-of-one, so anything can happen. In any case, anyone who figures we won't even make it out of the group stage is obviously a person not worth talking to.

Yeah, wasn't that the team with like a dozen future Jokerit -players and Erkka, The future Jokerit coach as the coach? I remember that was a ****show that didn't end that badly, did it?

Mhm. That year was a good reminder in not judging the book by its cover. Great result in the end, but we have to go pretty far back in history before we run across a team which was that bad on paper.

This year's team blows 2014 out of the water. On paper, that is. Resultwise we should naturally save our judgment 'til after the final horn.

Losses haven't even been the biggest problem. Not scoring any goals and just flat out looking like a beer league team is the real culprit behind Marjamäki hate.
