Why on earth was Vittasmäki cut? He was clearly better than Jaakola, Lajunen and Ohtamaa........

I somehow would understand Pihlström, JMA and Pulju if we would go run-and-gun. When we have go with defense first - there is no way I understand what braincells Marjamäki used when picking thoose three? Floater, turnovermachine and speedster without brain.

Marjamäki. JMA and Pulju says it all. It`s not about the team - he takes "his guys".

Palola compeletely disappeared against tougher competition.
Palola only played in the game vs. Sweden. But I guess being in the press box or as an extra forward is also a form of disappearance, so that's still a factually correct statement.

And in the only game he played, he had to deal with this "Pihlström as a center" experiment, so even here he's at least partially excused.

But like I said in an earlier post, there was a logjam of these right wing sniper types, so it was likely that one would suffer in that situation.

Ismo Lehkonen is quite upset about JMA picked over Juuso Ikonen. His name hasn't come up here much so quite interesting. I guess many of us don't watch SHL.
Pfft. Looks like a pretty standard UL "controversy" to me. They always seek out some player from under the radar and pump his tires. And often said player is under the radar for a reason.

In Ikonen's case, he has zero, zilch, none at all (and so forth) men's NT experience. Unless that kind of player is an NHLer, he rarely (or rather like never) gets a direct spot in a major tournament team. Also, when you look at Ikonen's stats... well. It becomes pretty evident why he hasn't got an EHT call either.

How can a player(JMA) that is benched in the most important game for his team in Liiga-playoffs be on the NT? There is always a good reason for benching and at that point they do NOT bench without one. It is a very bad signal for the NT if said player is taken before Liiga playoffs MVP. JMA is either good or very bad. He could actually become a cancer. When said player is from Oulu and a lot of other NT players have been playing on Kärpät either under Marjamäki or before him is that a good thing? Seems to me Marjamäki chooses players according to teams they played for rather than NT needs?
No wonder the best NHL-ers we had wont be coming. Marjamäki should be sacked and fast.

I think you are overestimating how much offense Peltola could bring to this team. I don´t see him fit to that role in this level. So JMA doesn´t really directly compete from the same spot as Peltola. It´s more like Pyörälä and the fellows. I wouldn´t mind seeing Peltola in the team. But at the end he would be just a sort of lateral move compared to the guys we have.

Though I admit this is one of the most "own player" flavoured team that I can remember.

Peltola is not in for offense. I´d have him on the 4th line with Osala-Sallinen-Peltola. Instead of JMA either Hintz, Palola or Kuusela. Kuusela actually would fit in well on 2nd PP and he also plays SH.

M: Marjamäki ( coach )
P: Player

Here is how the tryouts went:

M: Are you from Oulu or have you played for Kärpät?

P: ummm... Yeah?

M: Youre in!

Team Kärpät from Oulu-nation...:shakehead

It really isn't even that, since most of these Marjamäki's trusted men have been NT staples for years under a number of different coaches.

Pyörälä, Ohtamaa, Sallinen, Kukkonen, M.Aaltonen, JMA and Pulju are the names Late knows from his club team days. And out of those, you can only build some mild controversy around that Palola-JMA-Pulju -selection, where in my opinion, Palola got shafted a bit.

As for the rest of those names, they would've been in this team even under a different coach - M.Aaltonen has been too good to pass on, and the rest of those names aren't only Marjamäki's pets, they were also pets under J.Jalonen, Erkka and K.Jalonen.

There might be some minor differences. If our NT coach was, say, Jussi Tapola, then it's entirely possible that Pyörälä would not be in this team and Peltola was there in his stead. And if the coach was J.Jalonen, then that player might have been Jesse Joensuu. But, like Sanf so well put it, it would've been a purely lateral move. The basis of that choice would not have been replacing a worse player with a better one, but a different coach having a different favorite.

Marjamäki didn't boot a single player who without question showed now - or have shown earlier - that they belong in this team, he only started playing favorites when it came the time to fill the remaining holes. And, let me assure you, every coach does that.

The same can - and it does - extend to fans too. If you see a fan whining about an exclusion of some player and inclusion of another, in 99% of the cases it's not because said player is objectively better. It's just that said fan has a different favorite.

I'm pretty happy about our roster. We have a lot of different ingredients in our team and all of our goalies should be able to do a solid job if they get the chance. I try to be optmistic and I'm convinced that the weaker players will step up their game as the stakes are raised. You never know what happens in a short tournament. Sometimes even really strong teams play poorly and struggle due to lack of chemistry and/or temporary bad shape.

After seeing Kukkonen is in, where the hell is Ossi Väänänen? Dont tell me he is retired, i dont listen excuses :sarcasm:

I'd probably start with something like this:

Aho-Filppula-Savinainen
Hännikäinen-M.Aaltonen-Rantanen
Pyörälä-Kemppainen-Puljujärvi
Pihlström-Lajunen-Osala
Sallinen, J.Aaltonen

Ohtamaa-Honka
Järvinen-Hietanen
Jaakola-Lajunen
Kukkonen-Lehtonen

Korpisalo
Säteri
Ortio

Not exactly phenomenal, but that might work. IMO this team rides or dies with how Aho and Rantanen perform.

I'm more disappointed that Marjamäki wasn't able to get Pitkänen out of retirement. The original Oulu connection.

Nummelin hasn't officially retired, btw. Would he do?

---

Joking aside, here's what I'd do:

Korpisalo (Säteri)

Ohtamaa - Honka
Jaakola - Hietanen
Lehtonen - Järvinen
Kukkonen - Lajunen

Savinainen - Filppula - Rantanen
Aho - M.Aaltonen - Puljujärvi
Pyörälä - Kemppainen - JMA
Pihlström - Sallinen - Osala

Seb and Claywoman could also be the other way around.

Hännikäinen will be the part inserted if there's a line that needs a jumpstart.
