Sure, and I doubt the validity of those quotes. I don't doubt that someone claims that Perry made them, I doubt that Perry actually said them.

Were you not the guy who posted the obviously fabricated quotes attributed to Perry regarding team Russia a few months ago?

I do not remember exactly.
Many people talked about this fake.
However, I heard about that fake.
He spoke about him in the whole Russian sports press.

Even the general manager of the Russian hockey federation believed in this fake:shakehead

I can't read Russian and I believe that you are translating the quotes properly, but as I said I find it hard to believe that Perry said that, especially after the quote attributed to him before. It just doesn't sound like something realistic for him to say, and Russian sources don't have the best reputation for accuracy. If there's a video or recording of him saying it that would be great.

I distinctly remember Perry saying that he hadn't been aware of that tripple-gold club, but since the media were always mentioning it, he had it somewhere back in mind eventually.

That sounds more realistic. If a player says that they are interested in the IIHF's award for outstanding achievement in the field of excellence, that is fine. But there is likely no way that Perry, a 31 year old Canadian at the time the last tournament ended, dreamed of such an accomplishment that wasn't even significantly acknowledged until 2007, when he was already an NHLer.

So, last year the coach was announced on April 4th, and a handful of players got announced on the 8th. So potentially this week they start officially asking players.

No Olympics though hurts the chances of this team in theory. :(

"These four gentlemen bring a tremendous amount of experience in hockey management and in international competition as we look to assemble the best possible team to represent Canada at the 2017 World Championship," said Hockey Canada president and chief executive officer Tom Renney in a statement. "With the NHL regular season winding down, some very quick and smart decisions need to be made in regards to coaching staff and player selections; Ron, Sean, Scott, and Larry are prepared for the work ahead, and their collective knowledge and experience will be invaluable as Team Canada quickly assembles in preparation for its opening game on May 5.""

Well, it definitely sounds good that they will try to create the best team possible.

Since the NHL isn't going to the olympics, I wonder if HockeyCanada shouldn't change the approach of this particular tournament in France. This will be the one and only tournament before the olympics in 2018 - if you don't count the World Juniors. Wouldn't be a bad thing to select a few players from Europe in my opinion. You know what I'm saying. It makes sense, because no matter what, at the end winning the olympic gold is still a goal worth focusing on, especially for Canada after all. I don't think we will be seeing a full-eruopean team, but I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a few players from Europe, maybe few junior players, tough to say, but again - it makes sense, and wouldn't you do it?

On the other hand, there is a possibilitiy in my opinion that the good players will want to represent Canada in France this year, because they know it will be one of the few chances in the next 4-5 years.

 this situation is going to be really interesting. And I'm particularly interested in what team the US brings to this tournament

Maybe the NHL decision to forgo the Olympics has a reverse effect and all NHL Canadian/American star players who are available agree to play in Paris/Cologne.

a symbolic flipping of the bird to Bettman and crew by NHL players.

Or is it just my morning coffee buzz that's got me overly optimistic?

Team USA fan here. I envy you Canadian fans even if a lot of high-end players skip this year you guys should still get a few excellent players. My team will likely be NCAA, third liners and European league guys. I would love for once to ice a team USA similar to your 2015 team. Most likely USA players will skip. Either way I always pull for Canada also!

I feel like this is one of the few times these teams actually cheer for each other. The US team that goes always tends to be really plucky and easy to cheer for. Hoping they get an improved roster this year, but I find myself saying that every year for the US.

The good news is is that aside from the Russians, none of the rosters tend to be star studded.

I think they'll have a good team this year. young as always, but very skilled. Apparently Dylan Larkin has taken it upon himself to be the recruiter-in-chief texting others to get onboard.

Canada v USA final.

Thank god that this is your final version.

I second that sentiment.

on to other news. you got your finger on the pulse of the Philly dressing room. who's in and who's out? any country, Canadian, Czechs, Americans etc.

Haha :D ^^

since Hextall is the GM, I am even more interested who goes from the Flyers and who don't.

Giroux - I would be quite surprised if he went... he doesn't really need to go and rightfully so.
Simmonds - that's different case, I would like to see him in Paris after another strong season, he deserves to end the season on a good note.
Couturier - he's had very strong second half of the season, after he came back from injury, he's the best Flyers 5v5 scorer... he's definitely no-brainer for Team Canada if he wants to go.
Schenn - he would provide good secondary scoring on Team Canada, useful on the PP, physical player. After 2015 when he was most of the time only healty scratch on stacked Team Canada, he deserves another shot with better opportunity. He improved his game.

Del Zotto - UFA, doubt that he would go, most of the people here don't even want him on the team, that's not surprising, he hasn't had very good season, but last circa 15-20 games, he's been solid, but Canada should have better options anyway.

Konecny - that would be similar case as last year Domi, it would be good for Konecny to go there and experience a new level of pro hockey, and chirp in some games. He's a player.

My guess:

Canada: Simmonds, Couturier, Schenn.
USA: Gostisbehere.
Russia: Provorov, Lyubimov.
Czech Republic: Voracek, Gudas, Neuvirth.
Finland: Filppula.
Sweden: Lindblom.
France: Bellemare.

Maybe's:

Giroux, Mason.

Long-shot:

Vorobyov.

There's plenty of Flyers players/prospects who could play on the WHC.

It certainly would be great to see an american team where Okposo would be a 3rd line winger, or where the team defense consists of Dustin Byfuglien, Justin Faulk, or Erik Johsnon. I think that the players should give it a second thought - if they make a good, strong team together like that, they can easily win the tournament and beat (a good) Team Canada for once. What's not to like? :)
