Dave Dombrowski gives up 3 players for a relief pitcher.

Sounds about right.

(I don't really care about giving up on Shaw. Easily replaceable. Dubon is a nice little prospect though at a valuable position.)

Eh I don't have a problem with it.

They filled a need with a legitimate MLB talent, while giving up a a fringe/4A guy, a SS/CF prospect probably at the height of his value, and a pitcher who while is intriguing, is a few years away.

Nothing remotely like what they gave up for Kimbrel last year.

Still curious to see what they do at DH. Napoli for a year or two? Bite the bullet and sign EE? There isn't a ton out there. I get not wanting to lose the 1st rounder, but I'd do it for Encarnacion, no one else though.

OXON HILL, Md. — The Red Sox have found the relief pitcher they needed, obtaining righthander Tyler Thornburg from the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. The trade involves multiple players and has not yet been announced.

Major league sources said that infielder Travis Shaw would be one of the players going to the Brewers along with Double A infielder Maurico Dubon and Single A righthander Josh Pennington.

Thornburg, 28, is in his first year of arbitration eligibility and will be under control for at least three years. He was one of the best relievers in the game last season. In 67 appearances, he threw 67 innings and allowed only 38 hits while striking out 90.

Hell baby
Kimbrel/Smith/Thornburg/Kelly

That could play, that could definitely play

Thornburg started throwing more of a power curve last year....that's helped him against righties. He always had a nice changeup

I'm not. No chance I would surrender a pick for him. He's best off re-signing with the O's. Some players will have a hard time finding great contracts. It already seems like EE overplayed his hand.

Other news: Nats and White Sox talking Sale. Deal might happen. Giolito and Robles as the leading pieces. Anyone interested in paying that? Benintendi/Moncada and Kopech/Groome. I wouldn't deal for anyone, he's one of the best assets we have.

I go back and forth on these type of deals. Sale is a legit #1, who could be the difference between winning a WS and not winning one in the next 2-4 years.

If it were Moncada and Groome, I could deal with it, but that's probably because of Moncada's struggles in a small sampling of games and the fact that I haven't seen video of Groom throwing 105 like I've seen Kopech (together).

Logic says that all four (Groome, Benintendi, Kopech, Moncada) aren't going to be A+ professionals. More likely one of the 4 ends up being a stud, one is an above average player, on is ok and one busts. Don't know who will be what, but as of now I'd rank them Benintendi, Kopech, Moncada/Groome. I could be way off on this, but to be able to put Sale at the top of the rotation, I'd give up any combination of the above, except Benintendi and Kopech.

I know that one of Benintendi and Moncada would have to go...but damn, I just feel like it'll be dumb move.

[EDIT]

Well...if it is some sort of deal with JBJ and prospects, then Dombrowski deserves his own statue...but I think we all know that won't be the case.

I like the Thornburg deal quite a bit.

It was the right time to sell on Shaw and Dubon. Never heard of the 3rd guy.

I still want a lefty reliever we can rely on, but it doesn't look like that's happening. At least Thornburg gets lefties out.

Worried about what we might offer Chicago for Sale. I like our starters.

I'm thinking Erod gets included as well, unless we want to go with lefties for 3 out of our top 4 starters.

JBJ + Erod + prospects?

Chris. ****ing. Sale.

Holy crap.

Kinda scary to think they just gave Price $30 mil a year and he's the 3rd best pitcher in their rotation.

They really are all in. Hopefully they continue to fix the bullpen now.

Still holding my breath on the rest of the deal, but if we're not giving up a major leaguer or Devers or Groome (can we even trade Groome yet?), this is amazing. Was expecting a much higher price.

Looks like the deal for Sale just went thru. Moncada is one of the guys going to the White Sox.

That's more than solid - the rotation should be dominant. Erod and Wright as the 4 and 5? Yes please.
