I believe the compensation rules for this off season remain unchanged and the new rules take effect after 2017

Sooooo if Boston signs Encarnacion because they are over the luxury threshold they lose
2nd
5th
1 M of international allotment (which I believe is capped at 5-6 M)

That's brutal and not much better than losing a 1st round pick. At least they made some other decent tweaks (like a player cannot be QO'd two times in a row, teams will only be compensated if the qualfiied player get more than 50m). That will lead to more trade-action which is great.

Not gonna lie, this new CBA is very, very small market friendly. It's lopsided and other important things haven't been adressed at all that it almost makes me wish that they wouldn't have found common ground.

Thank you. The comp sure seems that way and the small market friendly

It's like MLB closed every big market avenue except no hard cap so if LA & New York want to spend $300 M it theoretically will hurt bad in tax penalty but they have that option

Not only the compensation system is small market friendly. They also get a higher hard cap (5.25m small market, 5m mid market, 4.75 big market on IFA.)

And it seems like the tax rate when being 40m over the limit is gonna hurt BAD...like very bad. 50% and bumped down 10 draft slots (?). Some say already that no team will go over that 40m mark.

I wish they would have tried to revamp the schedule. Earlier start (like a week or so), 8 less regular season games, 3-game WC-series and 7 game division series.

What does it tell us about the Sox off-season plans now that the 2 most prominent short term Ortiz-replacements have signed elsewhere? It's either a) EE has been the target all along, which I highly doubt or b) they have their eyes on the trade market or c) they wait out the market if some player falls into their lap. maybe Bautista if they are willing to surrender the pick (hopefully not)

God dammit....

I guess you don't want a manager in limbo. It's better for the locker room this way.

I'm surprised there has been no talk about Trumbo.

Seems like a perfect fit for Fenway.

I'm not. No chance I would surrender a pick for him. He's best off re-signing with the O's. Some players will have a hard time finding great contracts. It already seems like EE overplayed his hand.

Other news: Nats and White Sox talking Sale. Deal might happen. Giolito and Robles as the leading pieces. Anyone interested in paying that? Benintendi/Moncada and Kopech/Groome. I wouldn't deal for anyone, he's one of the best assets we have.

He's going to Washington, absolutely. If that is what Washington will really send. The White Sox have to take a deal like that, and I'm not sure I would want Benintendi and Groome going for one guy, even Sale.

Sox are in the middle of a pretty substantial deal for Tyler Thornburg, a reliever I wanted them to pursue back in May. The details are still being hashed out

Dave Dombrowski gives up 3 players for a relief pitcher.

Sounds about right.

(I don't really care about giving up on Shaw. Easily replaceable. Dubon is a nice little prospect though at a valuable position.)

Was just coming to post this. That's huge. Not great for my dynasty league team as now Thorny is gonna lose save opps, but I honestly don't care.

Also, Shaw is going to Milwaukee...Moncada at 3b?

He was pretty dominant last year and they have a lot of control with Thornburg.

I'm never a fan of giving up a haul for a reliever, but this isn't too bad provided Thornburg adjusts to Boston well

Moncada, Panda, etc. I guess?

They needed to add to the pen. People will be upset about Dubon, but losing Shaw is a total non-factor to me. This comes down to what you get from Thornburg. If he's as good as he was last year, or close, I make this deal all day.

(In fairness to him he looks like he has lost a ton of weight....I'm not buying it until I see him not be tubby in game action)

Dubon is a nice prospect. Projected as a utility guy with the sox but he's probably gonna be good enough to start in Milwaukee at 2B or SS. He's a nice story too.

I like Pennington a lot- he's far away but he has legitimate arm talent. The sox drafted him knowing he would need TJ and he has come back pretty strong from it. He probably projects more as a reliever but it really is too early to tell with him
