If it were to be a 3-year deal, pay him $5M in year 1, $2.5M in year 2, and $1M in year 3, that would bring the AAV to $2.833M.

I believe at his age, Thornton could sign an incentive laden contract, so make him earn it.

If Jumbo Joe wants 3 years then I'd insist on a max of $15 million....
Cap hit of $5 annually but structured $7/$5/$3 to lower the buyout and hit in case he busts.... not sure if that structure is possible/allowed

The Kings would be wise to see how the current roster does with all the changes that have been made already. Let's see what we got first. There is the whole season to make further moves.

If you pay $7M in the peak year, the low year has to be at least $3.5M, and salaries can only fluctuate 35% year-to-year. So $7M, $5M and $3.5M would meet both parameters.

Over 35 contract so in case of a buyout, the kings still have the full cap hit.

Dorion and Blake reportedly talked about Phaneuf for Brown.

Just want to point out that the rumor I posted about Thornton a month ago has turned out to be pretty accurate. I said Blake planned on pursuing him, now Rosen reports Thornton is a "priority" for LA and that they're pushing hard.

You should get hired by the kings.

Wait Rosen?! Now this is real stuff.

Lets do it!!!

Pearson - Kopitar - Toffoli

Brown - Thornton - Carter

Kempe - Dowd - Brodzinski

thats a really solid top 9, maybe even above average if that 3rd line produces anything...

It's super risky, but if we could get Brown for Phaneuf, Sign Thornton, and then get a cost controlled forward in a Muzzin trade, we could fill out our line up.

Gaborik-Kopitar-Toffoli
Pearson-Thornton-Carter
CCF-Shore-Brodinski
Kempe-Dowd-Lewis
Andreoff, Nolan

Trade Clifford for cap relief

Forbort-Doughty
Phanuef-Martinez
Fantenberg-LaDue
Gravel

There are major concerns with the cap with this line-up, as well as what still looks to me to be a shaky defense.

Cannot rely on Gaborik
Kempe is not a 4th liner
that defense is really bad, Phanuef is not an upgrade over Muzzin..
can't have 2 rookies as a pairing, even a bottom one

Blake didn't buy-out Greene for the cap savings this year at the expense of having a cap hit on Greene the following season to not go hard after someone.

Will he strike out or not is the question.
