Kings were able to sign toffoli and Pearson for over $1.5 million less than what was being tossed around at this point last year. Kings actually have over $5 million in cap space now after signing our RFAs. Kings just had a great draft.

It's possible we can fit Tavares in as a UFA just by dumping Clifford's contract. Even with Brown and Gaborik still here.

2018-2019
$5.5 million space now
$1 million from clifford trade and replace with ELC
$950,000 nolan expires- can still be buried now
$2 million cap adjustment - not impossible since $2 million is what it went up this year

Total= ~$9.5 million

Buy out or trade Gaborik for even more space if necessary. So the kings can fit him in as a UFA. The only question is if the kings have the assets to trade for him earlier than that.

Unless I am missing something here, you don't have much cake left, if any, to sign Doughty and I'd rather keep him than have JT. There is not a way you could fit Kopitar, JT and Doughty on the same team.

Unless Kopi is moved, which isn't happening, zero chance, JT is not a 2nd line center, he's a 1st line center and will get 8 to 10M and that's not $$ you spend on a 2C.
Unless there is a hole/vacency , he would never sign in LA.

Tavares will never sign in LA period. All this talk is just a drug induced fantasy.

Pearson-Kopitar-Brown
CarterThornton--Toffoli

Would be a pretty lethal top 2 provided we get the bounce back season without the Sutter Shackles. That 2nd line would be pretty tough to stop and you still have Gaborik on the 3d line.

Per Friedman, THorton wants a min. of 3 yrs at 5-7M per. I can't see the Kings doing that.

Yeah, no way. Some GM will be making a big mistake if a deal such as this is offered and signed.
too long and too much.... its either a 2Y/$10m or pass... so our options are pretty limited

Left Wing
Patrick Marleau
Patrick Sharp
Thomas Vanek
Jordan Weal... would love to have him back

Center
Joe Thornton
Mike Fischer
Martin Hanzal
Brian Boyle
Nick Bonino
Mikhail Grigorenko... I would take a chance here

Defencemen
Dmitri Kulikov
Michael Stone

I'd take flyers out on the 2 in bold, Weal is young enough to fit in and has always scored and played responsible while Mikhail is still plenty young enough to improve if he's in a place to be successful.

Buyout or cap dump Gaborik. That alone should do it. With all the Ontario defensemen coming up, a trade of Muzzin/Martinez for prospects and as a by product, cap space also would help.

Friedman outright posted that he believes the Kings would at least seriously consider it. Not so farfetched if he's saying it.

Like Dee mentioned above, no way JT comes here to be the 2nd line centreman. You cannot pay him the amount of cash he's going to command (close to $10 million) while having Kopitar on the books and still needing to pay Doughty ($10 million +). Not gonna happen.

Also, like several have noted, when was the last time LA attracted a marquee FA - assuming Tavares even gets to that point?

Those are fair points.

But given that a number of people are saying stand pat this offseason due to the lackluster UFAs and that the kings seem to be not be doing anything on the trade front, there is no harm in waiting to see what JT does in the short term.

Freidman believes he's not signing anytime soon. And may actually have a chance of hitting UFA.

I think he'll go UFA, why wouldn't he? He's elite, and in addition to the points he brings, he's a helluva leader. That ownership has screwed that team over, don't even have a decent building to play in. I think they know he's unhappy as well, one reason they got Eberle and put a pretty decent (including Hamonic) package for Duchene. (Sakic is a fool, hard to believe with all his failures, he still has a job)

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2717937-nhl-rumors-latest-trade-buzz-on-matt-duchene-ilya-kovalchuk-and-more"

"Snow had an offer out to the Avalanche, with Hamonic and the Islanders' 2018 first-round pick as part of a package for Matt Duchene,

Isles are going nowhere fast, not a contender
I think he would like to move on, to sign with a team that is a contender.

What if he's productive for the duration of that contract? That cap hit is actually very low for a productive centerman.

I'm not saying I advocate giving him a deal like that, but it's a calculated risk for the team that does. Most 38 year old players you'd never ever give a 3 yer deal to, but Joe isn't most players.

Most 38 year olds aren't coming off a significant injury. Non one should offer him more than 2 years. I'm not saying Joe won't be productive, but this is a major risk for any team.

Obviously he would help immediately but yes, anything longer than 2 years is to big a risk especially considering we'll be having an influx of centers with Amadio, Vilardi and JAD coming up over the next 2-3 seasons....

we could always take a gamble with Jordan Weal and Mikhail Grigorenko..... low cost/risk, medium/high reward....

I wonder what Hemsky is asking for?

I know he is made of glass but a one year reasonable salary might be better than other UFA options.

Kings have their glass guy, don't need another. But maybe they could get a guy like Sam Gagner for a fair deal. he was good last year, i watched most of the Bj's games. esp strong 5 x5 and on the 4th line. Was very effective on the PP as well.

Rosen confirms LA is talking to Thornton.

Not surprising. Just posting since nothing Bernstein says can be believed until verified by others.

If by whatever reason we are stupid enough to get him, that ****ing nest on his chin had better go....

If the deal is right, I don't think acquiring Thornton would be stupid.

If the deal is right. 5-6mil x 2 yrs.

If Blake goes more than 2 years on Thornton, I hope he receives the same criticism levied at DL for some of his contract decisions.

2 yrs @ $5 mil max AAV, I'm good with it, too. Anything more, hell nah
