What if that 5th turns into another Amart, Colin Miller, Jonny Brodzinski, Kevin Gravel, we usually draft better in the middle rounds anyways lol...

The A's have managed to constantly obtain premier talent for rentals but are super cheap whereas the Kings and FO are not and will likely retained the acquired talent...

If you want to spend money now to maybe have a Martinez or "maybe" NHL'ers 7 years from now, that's great; however, you should stop trying to produce rosters for this upcoming season with winning in mind and be on the rebuild train if that is the case.

I'd rather save the $3MM and gamble that it can be used for something better than Vanek and a potential 5th round pick.

K17, I am curious to know why more NHL teams don't take the NBA/MLB approach with cap space and sign guys to short term deals and if they don't fit in move for assets you lack like our Kings current do...
we could theoretically use the $6 and say a Vanek for 2 years and $6mill, or a Bonino for 3-4 years and $9-$12 milland then ship them off at the deadline to acquire either picks to help replenish the farm or a kid that maybe needs a change of scenery....

The Kings did this quite a bit in Lombardi's early years.

One of the best examples was Brad Stuart. Prior to the 2007-08 season Stuart signed a one-year, $3.5 million UFA deal with the Kings. The Kings traded him at the deadline to Detroit for a 2nd in 2008 and a 4th in 2009.

Detroit's 2nd round pick was flipped to Colorado for Brad Richardson.

Pretty good asset management on this one.

I don't know if Vanek is the guy for this kind of scenario.

Which was done when the team sucked and losing was expected.

With the Kings in a "win-now" mode, using the available cap on two guys for the intention of flipping for minimal assets in a couple of years doesn't make sense.

Now, if you want to blow it up and tank then, by all means, let's sign some vets that will bring back assets at the deadline.

K17...I know where you stand on this so it is directed at K11. They can't have their cake and eat it too: need to either be all in on the suck or use the space to actually make the team closer to a contender. Vanek is a black hole move.

K11...I'm not against the idea of signing someone with the intention of flipping them, its just that I'm more in to that under a blow-it-all-up scenario and start over.

Nick Bonino and Brett Connolly will be the huge offseason acquisitions. Blake's hands are tied with limited assets and LA isn't a huge UFA attraction.

I doubt any moves like the one I described with Stuart will happen this summer, and it probably shouldn't. I wouldn't mind seeing the Kings pick up Bonino, but no more than 3 years.

If the Kings are not solidly in a playoff spot by the next deadline, it is time for more drastic moves. Will Blake and Robitaille have the courage to execute those moves?

Thats why I've said make the signings and if by the trade deadline this team is going nowhere, well then you unload everybody and I mean everyone possible....

I'd be in on a Bonino deal as well but would also want to limit years.

Got to pay to play though in UFA.

I agree, but Blake needs to sell now if they're not going to make the moves this to make this team a contender worthy roster this season.

THey aren't good enough to win now. Given the hint about philosophical differences in the front office a reason that DL as let go, I don't see Blake or Luc doing something to 'win now' when they aren't close. Improving the team, that I think should be their goal. SIgn a FA or make a trade to improve them/be competitive, yes, as long as (FA) isn't a rental. Better to bring up a kid or trade for a young prospect and let them get their minutes in.

Given their position and the competition in the div/conf, that's not something you can do in 1 off season. They don't have the blue chip prospect to offer , other than LaDue and wisely they won't move him. I think Blake is trying to get a top line forward, and using AMart or Muzzin but given their age, that might not get the young (25 or under) forward they should get.
DL didn't leave a lot to work with, which is why retooling the farm should start this year.

I also think that this offseason, there seem to be many defendants available via trade, especially after Vegas horded so many. Add the fact that Muzzin and AMart had a bad year, equals difficult task to trade one of them for a top 6 winger.

I agree while neglecting the "anything can happen" element of sports.

Management isn't saying that; however, Luc also is trying to sell tickets.

I truly believe they are committed to replenishing the pipeline but they also think they can win now as well.

You guys have it all wrong, if the Capitals didn't give it to him someone else would have!
If only I had $10 for every time I saw this in one of the Kopitar threads, I would have plenty for a quick trip to Vegas, and an evening of gambling and drinking.

I do not believe Blake would have considered Oshie. I hope he went to school on Dean's mistakes over the last few years.

Oshie and Kopitar don't even compare. Kopitar's worst year (this year, 52 points) is 8 points shy of Oshie's best year.

Kopitar has longevity, leadership, health, and versatility on his side.

Bringing Kopitar up in an Oshie comparison is just embarrassing and you look like a fool.
