There are always new talents in Sweden - they produce 1st picks almost every year in different positions on the ice.
But I understand some are worried to burn one year of ELC @nyr2k2 , but how I see it if Rangers fail to qualify for playoffs - they all burn one year or one season who are playing on the current Rangers team including Henrik. And then some of the fanbase want to move all above 30+ and that should automatically fix things to compete better next year.

I don`t know what is worse, but if Lias is an asset they can use to try to get into playoffs - I really doubt the management in New York Rangers wait based on his ELC topic if Lias is NHL ready. One year less on the ELC is not important compare to some long term contracts and buyouts the recent years which hurt the overall salary cap more in comparison.

The way I look at how the Rangers season has evolved so far is the Rangers are really going to have a hard time making the playoffs. We have a lot more road games in the second half and we've got key players either out--Shattenkirk, Kreider or questionable banged up--Hayes, Staal and even McDonagh might still be banged up. If we get there it's basically going to because Henrik will play another couple months worth of lights out goaltending and even that might not be enough. And advancing even past one round is not a bet that I would take.

It would be a mistake for the Rangers to be a buyer with the current situation. IMO it would be smarter for the Rangers to sell and that should include Nash and could include Grabner--and if those things happen the Rangers going down the final stretch of the season will be missing other key players. So......why have Andersson in the mix?--- how about to further acclimate him into the Rangers system for the tail end of this year or for next year. For now he can do that in Hartford---towards the end of the year he could get some NHL games whether he breaks the magic number for burning a contract year or not. That's the way I see it anyway--he'll be available here if needed. If he stayed with Frolunda his availability is a lot more complicated.

Anderson will play Wednesday per Larry. I hope everyone here has realistic expectation for him especially at first. He should get 14-16 minutes a night, take faceofffs, and PK.

Edge and E-Train-Back to Sandstrom, how did he not live up to his potential? Guy was the only "star player" the Rangers had in that era. He played on some gong show teams with not much help. Rangers had zero stars in the 80s. Zero until Leetch showed up and that was at the end of the decade. Sandstrom was also almost traded like 17 times by Esposito the impatient, even once for Gretzky. Guy played his ^%^ off here and was often banged up.

I watched Sandstrõm when I was in NYC as a tourist and an American friend who was an Islander fan took me to the MSG. I remember an Irish pub right outside it (Blarney Stone?). He hated Sandstrõm called him goon etc. I wasn't used seeing a Swedish player with that reputation. He was hated in Sweden as well except in Gävle and Fagersta.

Sandstrom wasn't a goon. He hardly ever fought and when he did he didn't do very well. He was big and annoying to play against. There were always opposing players pissed at him. He was kind of like a much bigger version of Zuccarello. He'd start stuff sometimes but quite often it was someone would whack him and he'd whack them back. He'd go to the dirty areas--he'd finish his checks. He wasn't a fighter though. He had great hands--a great shot, size and he skated really well. He scored a lot of goals.

I understand all the benefits of assigning Andersson to Hartford, but it just seems bizarre to me. I obviously don't know what was said in meetings between Andersson and Gorton, but I would have thought that Andersson would want to do whatever it takes to potentially play in the Olympics, and that the organization would be inclined to let him.

I agree with this.
It's very strange to me that Andersson wouldn't want to play for his country, or have a shot to play in the Olympics, considering this might be one of his only shots to make Team Sweden.
He must have been told that he would play in the NHL at some point this year and that he needed to get acclimated to the NA game and rinks?

Anything short of a hat trick and I will drop him out of my top 10 in my prospect rankings.

if Andersson gets called up the NHL this season that means he have played on 4 different teams in 1 season, 5 if he goes to the olympics

Maybe him playing in the AHL is an inclination that he wasn’t going to play for team Sweden in the Olympics. Not because he isn’t good enough but maybe because all he would have been was a healthy scratch or 4th line center. He will make an Olympic team or two down the road that’s for sure.

That's not the case. The reason he wasn't named to the initial roster, was because of the shoulder injury. He would be the 2nd or 3rd line center behind Lundqvist (Ridiculous, but whatever) and maybe Lindholm. That team doesn't have a very strong center depth. Worst case scenario, he'd be behind Lander. There was definitely a chance for Andersson to be on the team and the staff mentioning him to be on the shortlist for the final 2 spots proves that. he was only on the shortlist because of his shoulder injury. Even as a 4th line center, it's a great honour to represent your country at the Olympics. Pettersson not being on the team is a bit odd but he did not have a great WJC

Joel will most likely be the 4th line center. That's the role he usually has with Tre Kronor. Lias would probably have been the 3rd center or put at the wing depending on who the other forward who is to be added would have been.

Yeah, he definitely had a chance to be used in a significant role on that team. I wonder if the player has any say in being sent to Hartford and called back from his loan at Frolunda.

Wow he’s coming back already?

I thought maybe he was assigned to Hartford because his injury would make him miss the Olympics.

From what I've read in Swedish media he did not. Lias Andersson om framtiden

"You're staying with the NYR organisation, why have you taken that decision?
- It's not my decision but the Rangers who wanted it. Of course I'm with them as well. The Rangers thought that I should take the chance over here and all I can do is to listen to them and it is the Rangers who own my rights. Also, I won't say no to play in the best league in the world."
