supplement him with Duchene is the sane idea

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Trying to outscore your poor defense every season for over a decade is insane. Refusing to pay for defense in UFA, or drafting one early in the first, or refusing to trade for one, and then thinking you can get by with perennial stop gaps is insane.

Supplementing Jost with Duchene would be the have your cake and eat it too option. Would really love to see them pull that off, but don't see how they improve the blueline without moving someone like him.

lots of money coming off the books this offseason in case you weren't paying attention
not saying we should overspend (we already most recently did that with our RFA "D-man") but our hands were clearly tied due to poor past decisions

This year draft Patrick

Next year tank and draft that Dahlin kid , he's a left handed D too which Avs need the most right now.

In two years this team will be very good if all the above happens.

Landeskog-MacKinnon-Rantanen
Jost-Patrick-Duchene

Dahlin-EJ
Zadorov-Barrie

We should have Myers he plays for the Baby Avs, why didn't we sign him?

To me this is emblematic of how poor this organization is at identifying good defenseman, and aggressively pursuing them.

The Avs have had good connections with Rouyn-Noranda for a long time, and have had multiple prospects playing for them the last couple years.

Myers had a good season last year and a good playoffs. Avs mgmt absolutely should have been aware of him. It should have been easy for them to get a tryout with him, and an obvious benefit to get a free look and possible asset to add to a struggling blueline, but they just didn't make it happen.

Philly did.

Oh I'm paying attention. I've also paid attention to their absolute unwillingness to pay UFA prices for good defenseman the last 15 years.

How do we know they didn't try, and Philly beat them out?

Real life UFA isn't like EA Sports UFA where offering more money is all you need. They've offered big money, from what I remember Stralman and Orpik decided to go with other teams despite the Avs offering more money.

Yeah which forced them to give FB the extra year to get him.

Myers was signed before his last season by the Flyers.

Before he go to the Philly training camp, he was invited to the Calgary development camp...

So obviously plenty of teams were interested in him. So it's not like there wasn't competition already.

Philly did.

They signed him before he had the good year, he had 8 points in his draft year. What these media types are forgetting is that everybody ignores the small markets in the Q, it's still so underscouted. Scouts don't even go up there, they wait for them to come to Montreal, might see these guys once a year if they aren't first round types. But, I agree no excuse for the Avs to not be aware of him or to look to aggressively sign prospects off tryouts.

We know they didn't get it done, that's the main thing.

In addition we also know they were positioned better than most any NHL team to get it done, in terms of connections to Rouyn Noranda's organization. In terms of their constant viewing opportunities to be aware of him with multiple prospects on the team. Current teammates and friends of Myers that he might be able to play with in the future, or have talk up the org. Plus a better chance at a job opportunity on the blueline than most any NHL team.

We also know the Avs history of not identifying good defenseman, and not putting much effort into using tryouts to supplement their prospect pool.

Bottom line though, there's a consistent theme of just not getting it done and missing out on a D man they had a chance at.

I know the big center is hard to pass on, but I wonder if Arizona is going to regret picking Strome.
