This might be a good year to move down for an extra second or to swap the first pick for an defenseman further along in development if someone has their eye on a specific player.

Sabres should be in the range where Foote is taken, and if that's the case they should stay put and grab him.

A couple of things. First, we have an extra 2nd and 3rd round pick from prior trades. Second, when Kulikov, Franson, Gionta, etc, are moved at the deadline, we might be looking at possibly one or two additional 2nd round picks by the time the draft rolls around.

If anything, Murray has the pieces to move up a slot or two in the draft to get "his guy" -- if he even has a guy he wants who falls into our drafting range.

I'd rather compile picks at the deadline, and then deal them for players at the draft. As Darcy (I think) said, [pp]People value picks less at the deadline, and more at the draft.

Besides all that, you want the Sabres to be loaded up with ammo going into the expansion draft, which happens two days before the entry draft. If teams are looking to get some return on players they think they'll lose, a bevy of picks could be really useful.

Back to the draft, historically, when you have drafts that are generally believed to be low in caliber, moving up is nearly always a bad idea.

I'm finding it difficult to get excited about anyone after the top two (not even that excited about them). I'm just not seeing the undervalued studs waiting to emerge even, who should I be paying attention to? Since we've been in that 4-10 range all year I'm assuming that's where we will pick.

^ hard to say, one of the oldest players in the draft playing at a lower level. Only 5-11 too.

All valid. He's intriguing because of the unknowns. Also, I've heard 'Erik Karlsson' more than once.

All I know is after the 14 and 15 lotteries we deserve to win a top 3 pick this year. That would really help the rebuild immensely if we can win the lottery and get a top 3 pick. And then trade whatever picks and prospects not named Guhle and Nylander to move up to #2 if we are at 3 and draft Hischier or Patrick. We could still use one more high end forward from the draft. Hischier would be perfect.

Are you saying win the lotto and then move up to say #2 and have the top two picks?

Better chance of getting struck by lightning twice.

I think he was saying use other assets to move up with our pick not add another pick.

Correct. If by some miracle we actually win a lotto pick it will be the #3 pick. We surely aren't fortunate enough to actually win either #1 or #2. But if we do end up winning the #3 pick, then I am trying to move up to 1 or 2 and ensure Hischier or Patrick. It's almost a foregone conclusion those two go 1-2. Hischier would look great on a line with Eichel. I'd package a combo of our 2nd, MIN 2nd, Fasching, Baptiste, Bailey, 2018 2nd, pretty much any prospect or pick that isn't Guhle and Nylander. It would only be moving up a spot, so 2 2nds, and a prospect might get the job done.

Depends on the actual cost as you threw a ton of names at the wall there. I'd be real tempted but on the fence. Either guy would drastically change the make up of our offense. However those are assets spent to aquire a forward and not a defenseman which makes me pause. It's similar to the debate of what would you give for duchene. It'd be a luxury rather than a necessity.

To me it'd boil down to what pieces are moving...you're looking at hypothetically

A first, 2nd, bailey etc and maybe another 2nd as you proposed for a first round pick one or so spots higher

Vs

Staying put in the mid range and getting lilegren or foote and keeping those other assets to flip for an nhl ready dman seems more plausible and smart imo.

We got Jack Eichel, we don't deserve anything.

Foote is so overrated because his bloodlines.

This entire draft is weak. On paper he fits every check of what we need. I'm no fortune teller though. He's a boom or bust prospect I'll admit. But I'm ready to take that chance.

When you were the worst team in recent NHL history over a 2 year period and lost the lottery for Connor McDavid who will possibly go down as a top 10 player in NHL history, I beg to differ.

20% chance and still got Jack Eichel. We all know there was an 80% McDavid wasn't coming to Buffalo, and who gives a **** about losing in 2014, Murray was taking Reinhart regardless.
