I honestly think the lack of hype is due to the lack of leaf players on team canada. This team looks really good to me especially when comparing to other rosters in this tournament.

Love canada down the middle this year and in net. They have legit number 1 d man returning player, they are good in all the right spots.

disagree with the leaf thing. during the glory run over mid-late 2000s there was like no leafs, and they were by far the most hyped teams.

Bert's got some syndrome going on regarding the Leafs. Easier explanation would've been that there aren't many 'star level' prospects on this team, and Strome's lost some lustre over the past several months.

Speers has been really good. Seems to have found chemistry with Cirelli. McLeod hasn't looked as good, not very noticeable and seems like the clear 13th forward right now.

agreed
Speers is looking pretty good. The Speers Cirelli Dube line was very good last game.
Mcleod looks a little lost.

Does Al even scout for team Canada anymore?

of course not...hasn't since 2010. but a few lazy bureaucrats at Hockey Canada are more than happy to defer to Murray.

Hockey Canada bureaucrats at player evaluation meetings:
Q. What do you think of player X?
A. Not sure, but if Murray picked the player in the draft, then that's good enough for me. He's on the team.

Which is fine by me. Murray > current bureaucrats at Hockey Canada.

Or maybe that theres no obvious star talent?

No. That couldnt be it. Barzal, Hart, and Jost certainly compare to the big names of the past like Crosby, Tavares, and Ekblad.

Canada has one medal in the past 4 years. This isnt a team that anyone is expecting to roll over the opposition. Thats the problem.

I like what I've seen from this team in the selection camp games and the pre-tournament games. I missed the final pre-tournament game last night, but I like that the team received a little wake up call as well. Looks like a team with nice depth and a system that makes sense at this level. This team is a very legitimate gold medal contender, and honestly that is what I'm expecting.

Down here in the South, we've not had any access to the tuneup games for the WJC. Could you guys tell me how the three Canes prospect on Team Canada have performed? From the stat sheet, looks like the Jost Roy and Gaithier line has looked good; are the two Canes guys carrying their weight or is Jost doing the heavy lifting? How has Bean's defense looked?

Thanks for any analysis.

I would say Roy has been more impressive then Gauthier not that Gauthier has been bad he was pretty good in the first two games but I think he was one of the players taking shifts off last night in the second period, Roy has been great in all 3 games. Bean I wasn't exactly impressed by in the game against Finland but he seems to be settling in a bit better and I think last night was his best of the 3 warm up games.

IMO Roy has looked pretty good. He is on a line with Jost and Gauthier. Jost drives the line. Roy supports well and seems to think the game well. Big GWG last night in OT.

Gauthier has been ok with the puck but needs to engage more to get the puck. He has a big frame and needs to use it more as a power forward than a finesse forward which he seems to be trying to be. He seems to want Jost to do the work while he tries to get open. He left Jost vs 3 Swiss players fighting for possession at one pt last night.

Bean has been a little suspect defensively. He moves the puck smoothly and efficiently. He has been ok in the Ozone but has not been lethal like last year in the dub.

Thanks to you both!

Lol at Columbus picking pld over Puljujärvi

The oilers were completely surprised when that happened. You can tell by their facial reaction
He needs to step up and show us why he went 3rd overall. Was this all hype ??!!

Dubois just needs to get into the swing of things and he will be allright.

Best way of doing that is to just to clear your head of any thought of what you are supposed to be as a 3rd overall pick, play hard and hit some bodies, a few shifts of that and he can find his groove.

Play hard ass, best way to get out of any slump. It's all mental.

I'm assuming Canada is the favourite this year but which other country is the biggest threat?

USA or Sweden?

Tier 1

Canada
USA
Sweden

Tier 2

Russia
Finland

The Rest

imo, of course. If I had to pick right now I think USA wins gold.

How can USA be favourites over Canada? Thought they made questionable scratches and injuries.
