Forwards are pretty underwhelming for Canada standards but defense and goaltending could win it all for Canada this year. Coaching can be only better, I hope. Really lot of key players missing for Canada or USA this year, too bad. Just imagine these 2 power houses playing with best possible rosters. It would be incredible for WJC hockey.

maybe someday...before I kick the bucket...Hockey Canada and USAHockey will give me that gift of a best of 7 Junior Summit Showdown Border Clash. McDavid v Matthews. oh what could have been...

Strome has had an underwhelming previous WJC appearance, a whelming OHL season, an underwhelming NHL camp and an underwhelming NHL tryout. I don't expect him to blow the doors off here.

I would argue that his WJC last year was whelming (better than a point-per-game) and that his OHL season has been overwhelming (better than 2 points per game).

Ya, I still remain doubtful. If I had to put my money on who'll have the better tournament, my cash is on Jost. I wouldn't waste .25 cents betting on Strome. But as always, I hope to be proven wrong and Strome wins tourney best forward.

I'm not guaranteeing that Strome or anyone on this team is going to light it up, but the narrative that this team lacks "stars" compared to recent editions of team Canada isn't accurate. A quick look at the rosters this decade outside of 2013 and 2015 and I don't see a gap at all.

I do think that this would be the most interesting year in tournament history to see Canada and USA both have their best. It's a good sign for American hockey that they are missing so many players.

Strome was the best player on the team last year. If he doesn't have a dominant performance this year, it will be a big disappointment.

Ducharme is a good coach.

He wasn't during the summer camp.

Strome had an underwhelming WJC last year? Maybe in the 3rd period of the QF's...sure...but he was far and away the best player for us last year. I don't understand that claim at all..

Sam Steel is better than about half of the forwards on the roster and is having a dominant season in the WHL but I get that Canada may have preferred a natural winger instead, it's just that his hockey IQ is so good he could transition pretty quickly. I see the logic in going BPA but also in trying not to play guys out of position, we'll see if they regret it if they struggle to score goals

Lines and defence pairings at practice today, per Mark Masters:

Dubois - Strome - McLeod
Joseph - Barzal - Raddysh
Jost - Roy - Gauthier
Dube - Cirelli - Stephens

Chabot - Myers
Bean - Juulsen
Clague - Fabbro
Lauzon

Absent: Speers

Really like where they seem to be going with the D-pairings there. 3 very "balanced" pairings.

Can't say i'm big on the way those forward lines look...but it's hardly finalized, and it doesn't really hurt to play around with some things. Still plenty of time to figure out what works and what doesn't. More information is good i suppose.

Makes me wonder if perhaps McLeod is a bit of a placeholder there though. Perhaps they eventually swap Speers in there when he's fully healthy? McLeod to more of the 13th forward role subbing in wherever needed, just like that?

But just like with the D, that configuration of forward lines seems to be looking for balance more than anything.

And, cue TSN's pimping of the chemistry between Strome and his newest linemate: http://www.tsn.ca/hockey-canada/vid...ome-speers-look-to-reignite-chemistry~1018940

What ever happened to the supposed vaunted Strome-Jost duo?

Starts off on a sour note when Strome notes that Dubois and Speers are good compliments to him because they are shooters (which they are not) and then we hear about the legendary 2014 U17 tournament, where Marner and Strome founded their legendary chemistry prior to their summer ball hockey games. Having actually attended nearly every game of that tournament and having seen I believe every team Ontario game at that tournament, I was quite aware last year that Strome and Marner didn't have noteworthy chemistry. Likewise, Strome and Speers didn't show anything at that tournament to indicate that they have noteworthy chemistry. I can't speak for whatever bantam tournament Strome mentions in the video though. Anyway, hopefully the coaches find something that works and hopefully TSN gets banned from using chemistry as a talking point.

Yeah, Speers was on Strome's RW at practice today and they apparently have chemistry dating back to their U17 days (see the link I posted above). McLeod at 13th forward. While I made light of it, I actually think a Strome-Speers combo could work in theory. Both high IQ guys, both good possession players, with Speers being a winger who can play well off and compliment Strome. Speers is not afraid to shoot the puck either. I also like him and Dubois on the wings as smart, defensive players. The other lines have good balance, which I like. In that sense I would expect Ducharme to start off rolling four lines.

If they once walked past one another in a hallway somewhere a few years ago, then that means they have chemistry.

Here's a more interesting story about Stephens, Strome, Raddysh and McLeod being teammates with the Toronto Marlies Midget AAA team a few years ago.

Yeah but Strome and Dubois have been in the same airport on four separate instances, and more importantly one time they both reached for the same yogurt cup and accidentally brushed hands. Canada would be stupid to ignore that kind of chemistry.

Word is, while playing on that Marlies Midget AAA team, Stephens grabbed the last roll of black stick tape off the shelf at the local Canadian Tire one Saturday morning before Strome could get to it. Interestingly, those two haven't played together as linemates at the last two World Juniors. #nochemistry

I like the balance of the lines. Joseph & Roy looked good together in the camp games and I would have started them together. I like the look of a Jost - Barzal - Raddysh line. I am an Oshawa Generals follower and I can tell you Cirelli will be a valuable player in this tournament. He's a team first player that will buy in to whatever role is given to him. Looking forward to the game on Monday.

The video is a little over 3 minutes in length, I couldn't make it pass 46 seconds...didn't want to lose my laptop to an unfortunate collision with the wall. better things to spend my money on this Christmas season.

but I loved the parody posts it inspired. In the best Canadian Lorne Michaels SNL tradition.

Does anybody know when our next pre tournament game is? And will it be streamed? I noticed that TSN2 has a game on tomorrow but I don't get that channel.
