It'll sell regardless. Without the absolute best though it isn't much different than those Russian events.

of course it would help if the NHL along with HC and USAH partnered in such an event and we have 100% participation of all eligible U20 players...

but without NHL participation the only players we would miss out on are the established 19 year olds entering their sophomore season...if the tournament were to happen in early Sept.

the newly drafted 18 year olds who have yet to crack NHL rosters should theoretically all be available. I suppose a GM could kick up a stink about a drafted and signed rookie playing in such a tournament while NHL rookie camps are ongoing. The shortsightedness of these morons never ceases to amaze me.

a best of 4 tournament USA v Canada U20 tilt every 2 years sounds good to me. It's time to drop the Canada-Russia November nonsense.

I liked what I saw from Maxime Comtois. I'm thinking he gets an invite over Smith. Maybe even over Sam Steel.

Thanks everybody on the previous feedback. Glad everybody is looking over things. This is my final team thanks to everybodys help.

Dubois - Barzal - Gauthier
Benson - McCleod - Cirelli
Harkins - Stephens - Raddysh
Jost - Steel - Wagner
Smith

Chabot - Juulsen
Chychrun - Lauzon
Bean - Vande Sompel
Girard

Hart
Booth
Cormier

I like that Jost-Steel-Wagner line

Adam Macherin-Pierre-Luc Dubois-Julien Gauthier
Tyson Jost-Mathew Barzal-Taylor Raddysh
Tyler Benson-Michael Mcleod-Mathieu Joseph
Austin Wagner-Sam Steel-Nic Roy
Nick Merkley

Thomas Chabot-Noah Juulsen
Jeremy Lauzon-Philippe Myers
Jake Bean-Connor Hobbs
Samuel Girard/Brendan Guhle

Carter Hart
Connor Ingram
Evan Fitzpatrick

Then maybe guys like Chychrun, Strome, Beauvillier and Crouse will be available.

Not sure what to expect this year. I really don't remember another year with as many spots that seemed up for grabs. It's difficult to even guess the camp invites. Last year Hockey Canada had 17 forwards, 11 defencemen and only two goaltenders at the December camp. This year I am guessing that there could be a few more players, and I hope there is some goaltender competition. Trying to keep in mind that Hockey Canada generally prefers players it has used before. I am assuming, for the sake of simplicity, that no current NHLers are loaned and that Patrick and Speers are not healthy enough to go.

Camp Forwards: Barzal, Stephens, Roy, Steel, Cirelli, McLeod, Harkins, Dubois, Howden, Benson, Mascherin, Fortin, Gauthier, Jost, Kyrou, Raddysh, Tippett, Merkley, Senyshyn

Camp Defencemen: Chabot, Bean, Lauzon, Myers, Fabbro, Girard, Hobbs, Vande Sompel, Clague, Foote (cannot be selected)

Camp Goaltenders: Ingram, Hart, Cormier, Fitzpatrick

My projected team, given the above assumptions:

Dubois Barzal Gauthier
Mascherin Steel Raddysh
Howden Stephens Jost
Benson Roy Merkley
McLeod

Chabot Juulsen
Bean Hobbs
Lauzon Myers
Girard

Hart
Ingram
(Sadly no third goaltender)

Adam Macherin-Pierre-Luc Dubois-Julien Gauthier
Tyson Jost-Mathew Barzal-Taylor Raddysh
Tyler Benson-Michael Mcleod-Mathieu Joseph
Austin Wagner-Sam Steel-Nic Roy
Nick Merkley

Thomas Chabot-Noah Juulsen
Jeremy Lauzon-Philippe Myers
Jake Bean-Connor Hobbs
Samuel Girard/Brendan Guhle

Carter Hart
Connor Ingram
Evan Fitzpatrick

Then maybe guys like Chychrun, Strome, Beauvillier and Crouse will be available.

Nice, very similar.

I know 97 age group seems to have less depth with the NHL loses but I'd be a bit surprised to see so many 98 forwards.

I like this team better

Is there any chance that Tyler Wall could make the team?

He's seventh in the NCAA in save percentage and fifth in GAA of goalies who qualify for the two stats, which is more than ten starts. He's on pace for a top ten all time U-19 season in both GAA and SV%. He also plays in a better league than the CHL leagues, and is putting up better stats than everyone besides Hart and Ingram who are putting up similar stats to him in a worse league. I realize he's come out of nowhere, so a lot of people probably don't even know who he is, but does he have any chance to make this team? His stats indicate he should be on it. This is all while being a true freshman starter for the #5 team in the country. Yesterday I saw a prospect writer mention him as a sleeper prospect, so maybe he is starting to get noticed for his play.

I'd like to see him get an invite so they can actually evaluate him to the 3 CHL goalies and just give him a shot because this team is going to need great goaltending. But more then likely they don't even give him a second look. Especially being 18 and with zero pedigree it is more likely that if he keeps up this kind of performance through this year and the first half of next that he will have a real shot at the 2018 team.

I'm surprised Cliff Pu hasn't received more attention. I really feel in a year where so many spots are open that he can come to camp and steal a spot. He's quite versatile, has great speed and is having a fantastic season thus far. Was surprised he wasn't on the roster for the Canada-Russia series. Be interesting to see if he gets a camp invite.

I don't know anything about the player. I've never seen him play. I do know how Hockey Canada operates, how it evaluates and builds teams for this tournament, and I'd say his chances of a camp invite are practically zero.

1. no experience with HC PoE U17 U18 etc.
2. League: CHL v NCAA. Hockey Canada pimps for the CHL.
3. Age. Hockey Canada generally defers to age for U20. Although, this year's team will be young because Hockey Canada has no choice but to select '98s for this year's team.
4. It's HC's current philosophy that naming 2 goaltenders to the team without an open competition at camp for a 3rd goalie is the better way to go. Apparently 3 or more goaltenders at camp attempting to win a #1 starter spot is just too stressful.

I'd give him better odds of getting an invite to camp if he had dual citizenship. Hockey Canada loves going after the duals. That would tend to bump him to the head of the line.

I would like to think that after last year's fiasco, and the fact that this year's tournament is in Canada, HC brass would be more open minded to all players, but I just don't have that level of confidence in HC brass to have that open mind.

My take,

Dubois - Strome - Gauthier
Crouse - Barzal - Jost
Steel - Roy - Beaudin/Cirelli/Kyrou/Raddysh
Wagner - McLeod - Joseph
Mascherin/Pu

Chabot - Juulsen
Brisebois - Myers
Mete - Foote
Girard/Mahura/Wotherspoon/Clague/Reddekopp/Quenneville/Bean/Hobbs

Hart
Booth/Ingram

I think Dubois, Strome, Gauthier, Crouse, Barzal, Jost, Steel and Roy all make the team at forward. I don't think McLeod is a lock but has the inside track for sure. I'd like to see a 4th line with speed and ability to grind opponents. I think a mix of McLeod, Joseph and Wagner could do that.

Then I think Beaudin fights with Cirelli, Kyrou and Raddysh for a RW spot. I like Beaudin for his versatility but all fit the role. Then whoever are left fight with Mascherin and Pu for the final spot. I like Pu in that role.

On D I think Chabot and Juulsen are locks. Myers, Brisebois and Mete have the inside track. I would take Girard but I think he'll have to fight with a bunch of guys for the 7th D spot. I think Foote has the inside track for the 3rd RD spot. He'll have to fight with a bunch of guys as well.

I think Ingram makes it as 2nd goalie in the end.

So I would take Beaudin, Pu, Girard and Ingram to complete the team.

So if we consider all the options, a possible of 8 eligible NHLers can be loaned back to play for Canada.

Here are my rankings from least likely to most likely being loaned:

1. Connor McDavid (absolutely no chance)
2. Mitch Marner (chances are decreasing faster and faster because of his importance to the leafs, as a leafs fan and world junior nut, I am torn between either choice the leafs make. Selfishly they'll want him with the leafs but it wouldnt surprise me that Lou and Babcock decide that they send him back for the tournament because the risk of injury may be lower at the WJC then in the NHL. On the other hand, recall Nylander getting concussed last year at WJC so overall I can't see the leafs taking that risk again)
3. Travis Konecny (same scenario as Marner basically but due to his performance being a lot less remarkable than Marner's he gets a little bit higher chance of being loaned. Plus Philly has some other players in the lineup that can fill the void Konecny would leave for 3 weeks.)
4. Jakob Chychrun (on a struggling Arizona team, not really playing much significant minutes, i say from this kid and onward down the list, there is a more than 50% chance he gets loaned to Hockey Canada)
5. Anthony Beauvillier (same type of scenario as McCann last year, playing well in sheltered minutes on a struggling team. not getting much PP time and not in top 6 role. If Grabovski comes back, its almost certain he'll be loaned out.)
6. Lawson Crouse (i view the chances of getting lawson is the same chances we had from getting Virtanen last year, lets hope he plays like virtanen did last year but overall good chance he gets loaned out.)
7. Matthew Barzal sent down to junior recently so he'll be a lock
8. Dylan Strome sent down today so lock as well

Mostly curious to hear your guys thoughts on my #2 through #6 situations... I can't help but imagine our forward group if we were to get all these players back. But one can dream right.

Crouse-Strome-Marner (would be my pick for most dominant line at the tournament)
Jost-Barzal-Konecny (good combination of speed and grit, would be best line on any other team at the tournament besides maybe the americans)
Dubois-Beauvillier-Gauthier (an all QMJHL line sounds pretty scary, especially with 2 big power forwards on the wings)
Mascherin-Stephens-Patrick (mix of speed and size on this good possession fourth line)
Raddysh (the guy has simply been too good to not put on the team)

Chabot-Juulsen (will be a great pairing to play against other teams top lines)
Chychrun-Bean (Chychruns strong defensive mind and skills will allow bean to create chances and push the play offensively)
Stanley-Myers (I fell inlove with Keith Aulie and Tyler Myers in 09' as the twin towers, i say we bring back Twin Towers 2.0)
Fabbro (If coach feels he wants Left and Right shooting Pairings, Fabbro easily can play up and down the lineup where you see fit)

Hart
Ingram
(Not sure who is really the go-ahead starter but I'd feel comfortable with either goalie in my net based on the way they've played this season)

Now to air on the side of caution, lets say we don't get anyone back from the NHL:

Dubois-Strome-Gauthier
Jost-Barzal-Patrick
Mascherin-Cirelli-Raddysh
Dubé-Stephens-Sideroff
Roy

Chabot-Juulsen
Bean-Fabbro
Stanley-Myers
Girard (The second coming of Ryan Ellis aka PP Specialist)

Hart
Ingram

Would really love to hear your thoughts guys so please let me know what you think.

Looks like we are going to rely heavily on our goaltending in order to have a chance at a medal of any color. It has been a really long time since Canada won as a result of good goaltending. Probably have to go all the way back to Manny Legace in '94.
Can Carter Hart or Connor Ingram be that guy?

No team is going to loan a kid getting consistent minutes. Write off Marner, and Konecny. It is insane to send a kid down multiple level in quality of game, then try to bring him back up. I don't think that experiment worked terribly well with Virtanen and Lazar. If you send a kid to the WJC, the intention should be to send him back to junior for the rest of the year. The AHL is different because that tends to be contractually obligated due to the transfer agreement (it can be gamed, but generally the kid wants to go if he isn't in the NHL).
