Any updates about whitecloud?

Probably won't hear too many updates about Whitecloud (and other NCAA free agents) until their regular seasons are over. Bemidji State's last game will probably be in early March barring an unexpected run.

Whitecloud will have to sign a 2 year ELC, so we'll see how highly coveted he is. He could theoretically sign a deal and join a team immediately. Whether or not he played or sits in the press box, it'd burn a year off his ELC. That's what the Flyers did with goalie Alex Lyon (who the Kings were interested in as well). But if Whitecloud goes the standard route, he could sign a 2 year deal that started in 2018-19, then sign an amateur tryout to play in the AHL for the remainder of 2017-18.

To be fair, that was a trend at the time that was driving many here and elsewhere crazy--drafting 'defensive' d-men with high picks. Did any of them actually stick? Teubert, McIlrath, Gormley, Tinordi...Even Oleksiak has struggled to fit, and Forbort kind of fits that, even though he was seen as more two way. Gudbrandson was #3 OA behind Hall and Seguin! Don't forget Schenn before Teubert in the same draft!
Good points about the 2010 draft. And to think Fowler dropped way down to the Ducks. And of course Forbort took a bad rap for a long time about being the last to play. I personally think Forbort isn’t any worse than Gud.

Imagine other teams trying to defend against Karlsson and Doughty. But seriously, what would you trade for Oliver Ekman-Larsson?I believe he is making 6 mil.Not sure if he has any term left after this season tho.

OEL will be a UFA at the same time as Doughty and Karlsson. $5.5 million AAV

If there was a player that dead set on leaving his current team, I'd want to make certain he saw the kings as the solution rather than a rest stop on the road to free agency. I don't want to be a high priced pit stop for him for 1.5 years and then he bolts. No more rentals at that price level.

If we had the option to take Tavares or Karlsson, I'd take EK.

I still consider forbort to be a failure in terms of where he was drafted. He's a 5-6 defenseman on good teams, and on a very solid team he doesn't make the cut imo.
You mean the Kings failed in terms of where he was drafted. Forbort worked hard and accomplished every kid’s dream.

With all the big/long contracts, and another one still needing to be signed, it's probably rentals or nothing for a while at this point. Unless they have cap space going out to match what's coming in. Any rental worth getting, unless they luck out with another 2014 playoff Gaborik, is probably going to cost something decent.

Come on. This place used to say the same thing about McNabb...yet now...

He, like Martinez and/or Muzzin, just needs a good RHD to play with. He's a good depth shutdown guy with good all around tools that is an excellent PKer and can eat nearly 20 minutes a game (Edit: make that most shorthanded time/game and total than anyone--even Drew. As well as less powerplay time than literally everyone but Folin) . That's a 2nd pairing defensive specialist. Still has very good metrics despite facing the 2nd toughest competition on the team (next to Drew), by far the worst relative zone starts (almost Vlasic deployment) with the least ozone starts and most dzone starts. He obviously has weaknesses--most notably no offense and a muffin shot--but saying he wouldn't even make the cut? lol. The only teams that might be true on are Nashville and St. Louis and that might be more due to LHD/RHD shutdown/offensive configuration than ability because it's easy to make a case he's better than Bitetto and Weber, and STL would have the luxury of "do we play the young guys with potential or put them with a shutdown D in forbort?"

Plenty of examples of much worse mid-first-round d-men. We got an NHL player out of it. Hell, Forbort might even have a case for unsung hero.

So was Tyler Meyer, who like Bogosian has turned into an injury ridden player.

Oh please, the fact that you mentioned Mcnabb on Vegas discredited everything else you said.

In defense of Mersch, when he was drafted a player like him had more value than he does today. The league has changed dramatically to more speed based. Look at a player like Dwight King who went from a solid contributor to two cup winners to out of the league at 28. Same thing with plenty of other guys from those teams who ended up out of the league early. Richards (30), Penner (31), Stoll (33), Fraser (29).

I was a big fan of Mersch but even I acknowledge he is fighting an uphill battle to ever have an NHL career, unfortunately same thing with Brodzinski who looks like a classic AAAA player.

Yeah I've never understood the Tavares to sign in LA stuff, but cap aside, can you imagine?? holy hell.

Which one is better?

Carter--Kopitar--Brown
Pearson--Tavares--Toffoli
Kempe--Vilardi--Brodzinski
Iafallo--Shore--Lewis

Forbort--Doughty
Muzzin--LaDue
Gravel--Folin

Or

Carter--Kopitar--Brown
Pearson--Vilardi--Toffoli
Kempe--Amaido--Brodzinski
Iafallo--Shore--Lewis

Forbort--Doughty
Muzzin--Karlsson
Gravel--Folin

Had to lose Gaborik, Martinez, Clifford for Cap reasons

There would be no way in hell you pair Muzzin and Karlsson. It would be DD/JM and EK/DF.

he'd be a rental. Kings don't have the cap space (without other moves) to resign him as a UFA like some other teams do. So he's almost certain to go to the highest bidder this summer.

Not to mention his financial situation... He is definitely going to the highest bidder.

Yikes. No thanks. Not interested in Mr. Minus.
Good luck getting a top 4 defensemen for less.OEL has struggled this season for sure, and on a bottom feeding team no less, but think he could turn it around in LA.If we could get him to extend I do this deal in a heartbeat. As much as people hype up Ladue, there's a reason why he isn't playing on the Kings roster.JJ would be another interesting idea if you could get the right deal done with CBJ.

They’d probably want a top 4 defenseman in return, since they’re probably going to make the playoffs, so not sure there’s a fit there.

Unless Forbort was going the other way but we’d have to add.

They're dreaming if they ask for a top 4 for JJ. Right now he's a 5-6 on their depth chart and a UFA.
