I don't see the point of holding on to a player when you can get someone better in a package. You can easily get an upgrade for Martinez+2nd.

I admire Martinez a lot. I just dont see why we can't upgrade.

The biggest goal is staying young and competitive. Martinez is no slouch, but he's playing out of his depth.

This is applies to Muzzin and Forbort as well.

The reason the team can't upgrade is because every team values price/performance in the cap era. Defensmen who bring what Martinez does nightly usually get paid a lot more than him because of where they are at in their careers. Plus, no team is going to trade a good younger D-man for Martinez and a 2nd, let alone a good RHD.

Can anyone for trading the guy think of one defenseman who could be acquired for a package like that that is as good as Amart? Upgrading is going to cost at least our 1st, if not the addition of a younger roster player.

Martinez and Muzzin, despite their shortcomings, are here for the long haul. 8M for those two is great value, especially when you have to pay Drew.

Just got done watching an entire KHL game; the defense is abysmal.

Frolov had the game winner in overtime.

I would hardly use the term long haul, especially if Blake and Co. are liking what they see out of LaDue and Gravel in Ontario it could realistically allow them to add a top 6 guy.

If those guys can step up, that would give flexibility, but neither of them have done so. They both had poor camps and aren't dominating in Ontario. LaDue looks better lately, but he or Gravel would be candidates to supplant Fantenberg, Folin, or Forbort, not Martinez or Muzzin. I was expecting more out of both of them to be honest, they aren't exactly youngsters. They are only 3 years younger than Muzzin, not a huge age gap there. Martinez is obviously a bigger gap.

Truthfully Fish, i was expecting more from all our defensemen but they've been inconsistent. It seems like our forwards are trying to speed up the tempo/game while our D is just playing it slow...

one thing that i'm a bit uncomfortable with: lak win stats are not far away from their lose stats. it's a very thin line. yet again.
this season i couldn't watch many games so i cannot judge with my hockey eye, how the dynamcs changed. it just seems like a history rewritten: this guys are capable both of winning the cup in june or going home early.
but i'm optimistic.
new coach and stuff are still learning, there is still room for improvement. i have confidence.
some old guys upgraded, first of all kopitar and brown. it's kind of a miracle to watch them shining again.
some new kids upgraded as well. kempe was the biggest revelation for many. kids are doing fine, they fit in.
some standard guys are still not there, like carter. gaborik, my guy, just came in, still magic, and i just hope he survives until playoffs.
bottomline: it's a thin line, again. like so many seasons before this team is capable of both winning the cup or not even be a part of the playoffs. my guts are telling me the first, it will be a good season. just stay healthy. gkg!

Not sure if any of you subscribe to The Athletic but there's an article about Doughty and his upcoming free agency. A lot of direct quotes from Doughty. Not sure if I can post direct quotes since it's a paid site so I'll summarize.

Basically he said he's excited for free agency and thinks about it often. He directly said he'll talk to Karlsson to see how much money he wants and Doughty said they both definitely deserve "quite a bit more" than what Subban is making ($9 million annually). He said "F yeah, I like Babs" and that he wouldn't not want to play for Toronto. At the end of the article he talks about how he loves LA and he definitely prefers to sign with the Kings but ends with saying, "You never know what can happen, right?"

The 2019 free agent defenseman class is slated to be insanely strong right now though but of course most of them will re-sign before then I imagine. Doughty, Karlsson, OEL, Myers, McDonagh, Gardiner, Ryan Ellis.

Sounds like that interview from over a few months ago or is this a new interview?

I think so many aren't looking at the entire picture.
Thinks look much worse than they actually are. Going back to 2012 the 2.28 GA/G is the 14 best overall.
Our D is sloppy at times and we are giving up more shots but our overall D is fine most nights.
We just can't seem to score. Man is this a broken record.
But unlike years past we are getting good shots and not scoring, Not just throwing the puck at the net from everyplace.
And because of that I feel our scoring woes should get better. When you are regularly scoring 2 goals or less you're not going to win games.

That cap increase needs to be more than a rumour, or we are pretty f***ed.

doughty: under sutter and lombardi i guess it would be 100% he would stay. how much did the philosophy and "logic"change under new regime? to somewhere around 90%? personally i cannot imagine kings without doughty, with kopitar and quick he is our trinity, the face of the team.

Why do you think it was 100% chance he would stay under Sutter? To be honest it sounded like last year he didn't like playing for Sutter. He actually said practice was boring cause all they did was practice point shots and he didn't have 100% freedom. Lombardi of course I think Drew loves and admires but I think he soured on Sutter.

It was just posted 2 hours ago so I believe it's new.
Doughty should've the alternate Capt removed. He acts like a child on the ice and not like a leader. He ran his month a few months ago and started panic by Leafs fans and Kings fans.It seems his immaturity hasn't learned from his first interview.Very disappointed he is a member of Kings leadership imo

as i understand, in sutter era he was irreplaceable. like a foundation stone, both on ice and for the public image of the team.
and i guess he still is irreplaceable, although i'm not sure how the regime change influenced his negotiation position, that was my question.

Ehh everyone knows Doughty is the most important piece on the Kings, especially with Muzzin and Martinez's regression the last few years. Everyone knows Doughty is still one of the top 3 d-men in the NHL. Don't think anything has changed under Blake and Stevens. It's not as if they were outsiders either.

Sometimes it seems Doughty thinks only a championship caliber team is worthy of him. Makes me want to slap him.

As long as he continues to back up his mouth, Doughty can be as outspoken as Dennis Rodman.
His play has always backed up his mouth.

With Doughty, that's all we need to be concerned about.

Or are you still hung up that he didn't drop the gloves with Tkachuk? If so, let it rest, already (not necessarily just you, Rocky).

Doughty doesn't fight, the same way McDavid doesn't.

I think that if MacDermid is in the lineup, Doughty won't be facing too much more of that type of bull shit. Tkachuk would cower like a little girl if MacDiesel went after him. Or let him know before the game that he was watching him.

Trading either A-Mart or Muzzin makes the defense worse no matter how you slice it. It's extremely unrealistic to expect or even hope that LaDue or Gravel can play 18-25 minutes a night covering the gaping hole that A-Mart/Muzzin would leave.

Not to mention you would be asking more out someone like Forbort who some seem to think is a garbage Defender now.
