The reason the team can't upgrade is because every team values price/performance in the cap era. Defensmen who bring what Martinez does nightly usually get paid a lot more than him because of where they are at in their careers. Plus, no team is going to trade a good younger D-man for Martinez and a 2nd, let alone a good RHD.
Can anyone for trading the guy think of one defenseman who could be acquired for a package like that that is as good as Amart? Upgrading is going to cost at least our 1st, if not the addition of a younger roster player.
Martinez and Muzzin, despite their shortcomings, are here for the long haul. 8M for those two is great value, especially when you have to pay Drew.
I would hardly use the term long haul, especially if Blake and Co. are liking what they see out of LaDue and Gravel in Ontario it could realistically allow them to add a top 6 guy.
Truthfully Fish, i was expecting more from all our defensemen but they've been inconsistent. It seems like our forwards are trying to speed up the tempo/game while our D is just playing it slow...If those guys can step up, that would give flexibility, but neither of them have done so. They both had poor camps and aren't dominating in Ontario. LaDue looks better lately, but he or Gravel would be candidates to supplant Fantenberg, Folin, or Forbort, not Martinez or Muzzin. I was expecting more out of both of them to be honest, they aren't exactly youngsters. They are only 3 years younger than Muzzin, not a huge age gap there. Martinez is obviously a bigger gap.
Sounds like that interview from over a few months ago or is this a new interview? Not sure if any of you subscribe to The Athletic but there's an article about Doughty and his upcoming free agency. A lot of direct quotes from Doughty. Not sure if I can post direct quotes since it's a paid site so I'll summarize.
Basically he said he's excited for free agency and thinks about it often. He directly said he'll talk to Karlsson to see how much money he wants and Doughty said they both definitely deserve "quite a bit more" than what he's making ($9 million annually). He said "F yeah, I like Babs" and that he wouldn't not want to play for Toronto. But at the end of the article he talks about how he loves LA and he definitely prefers to sign with the Kings but ends with saying, "You never know what can happen, right?"
The 2019 free agent defenseman class is slated to be insanely strong right now though but of course most of them will re-sign before then I imagine. Doughty, Karlsson, OEL, Myers, McDonagh, Gardiner, Ryan Ellis.

Why do you think it was 100% chance he would stay under Sutter? To be honest it sounded like last year he didn't like playing for Sutter. He actually said practice was boring cause all they did was practice point shots and he didn't have 100% freedom. Lombardi of course I think Drew loves and admires but I think he soured on Sutter.doughty: under sutter and lombardi i guess it would be 100% he would stay. how much did the philosophy and "logic"change under new regime? to somewhere around 90%? personally i cannot imagine kings without doughty, with kopitar and quick he is our trinity, the face of the team.
Doughty should've the alternate Capt removed. He acts like a child on the ice and not like a leader. He ran his month a few months ago and started panic by Leafs fans and Kings fans.It seems his immaturity hasn't learned from his first interview.Very disappointed he is a member of Kings leadership imoIt was just posted 2 hours ago so I believe it's new.

Ehh everyone knows Doughty is the most important piece on the Kings, especially with Muzzin and Martinez's regression the last few years. Everyone knows Doughty is still one of the top 3 d-men in the NHL. Don't think anything has changed under Blake and Stevens. It's not as if they were outsiders either.as i understand, in sutter era he was irreplaceable. like a foundation stone, both on ice and for the public image of the team.
and i guess he still is irreplaceable, although i'm not sure how the regime change influenced his negotiation position, that was my question.

His play has always backed up his mouth. As long as he continues to back up his mouth, Doughty can be as outspoken as Dennis Rodman.
