Special teams are extremely important in these short tournaments and the PK is just as important as the PP. Hjalmarsson is hands down our best penalty killer. He'd also be a good complement to one of our offensive D.

There are many Swedish D-men who plays PK and PP and meet the best lines of the opposing team every night. There is nothing which stands out for Hjalmarsson in this.

In this I give an edge for Edler, he does all of this but he does it with the twins whowill be on the team so you got a good set piece there (I am not going over the territory to just use set pieces again, meh, but this is a good case as all of them are good and no one of them three gets a free ride because of "set piece").

Every d-men can play PK, no reason to take out players just for that reason. Hjalmarsson has one of the highest giveaways in the league even though he is not a puck moving d-men. His defensive is very overrated.

Hjalmarsson defensive overrated? What?

Do not get why people have Hjalmarsson in the team. To me far from good enough.

1) He is great in his own zone

2) He is a great complement to the the offensive RHDs (Karlsson & Klingberg). They need someone that covers for them, and having someone like OEL or Hedman do it when they can lead their own pairing would be a waste.

I guess, if hard pressed, I think Edler could replace Hjalmarsson if you want more offence, but I think Hjalmarsson's superior defence makes the team better as a whole, whereas Edler is not among Sweden's top 4 offensive defensemen.

I think pretty much all our d-men are good defensivly.

Hedman should not play as a offensive d-men, OEL, Klingberg and Karlsson is much better than him in that. What makes Hedman stands out is his size, and that comes more in use in the defense (when you have players like those 3 that can play the offensive d-men), he is good offensivly, but not at the level as those 3 are.

Hjalmarsson is overall a good d-men, but he has a high giveaway for being a defensive d-men. He also sometimes has problem keeping up with the tempo. Even if he is good, he is overrated.

Giveaways just means he has the puck a lot, Luca Sbisa is a tire fire but he always does relatively well in terms of giveaways because he barley has the puck on his stick. Hjalmarsson is a top 3 purely shutdown guy with Vlasic and Tanev. I'm a Canucks fan but I'd take Hjalmarsson (slightly) over Edler.

Hedman has never been good when he has been the "secondary guy" in a pairing. He needs to be (allowed to be) the PMD in his pairing to be effective. And pairing two LHDs or two RHDs seem stupid when Sweden can find just as good defenders with the correct handedness. Canada does it right by restricting the choices to 4 LHDs and 4 RHDs.

The RHDs are pretty set at the moment (In order: Karlsson, Klingberg, Larsson and Strålman). Among the LHDs, OEL and Hedman are the locks, while Hjalmarsson, Brodin, Edler, Kronwall, Lindholm and Klefbom fights for the remaining two spots. I would personally pick Kronwall and Hjalmarsson if the choice was done tomorrow, and I project that Hjalmarsson and Brodin will be the best choices in 2018, but can see Lindholm getting ahead of either/both of them as well.

As others have stated, giveaways is a misleading stat in this instance.

I think Hjalmarsson needs to be there for Sweden. He's very good defensively, he's done an awesome job for Chicago, and he's, imo, a perfect fit for the more offensive players like Karlsson or Klingeberg. Sweden's defense is quite stacked though. Can't go that much wrong even with guys like Larsson or Brodin. And Kronwall, if nothing else, is perfectly suited for NHL style of game, and has experience.

And Kronwall, if nothing else, is perfectly suited for NHL style of game, and has experience.

Why is Kronwall perfectly suited for NHL style of game? If you are implying that he is a physical player then you have never watched him play, he is not playing with physicality.

And experiance? We have Sedins, Zetterberg, Lundqvist, Steen, Bäckström etc who has experiance, you cant take out a player only becuse he has merits, with your logic someone like Henrik Tallinder could be a player for this team.

Defencemen that is better than Kronwall: Karlsson, Klingberg, OEL, Hjalmarsson, Edler, Brodin, Lindholm, Ekholm, Larsson, Oduya, Hedman, Strålman.

Soon five weeks left until initial rosters are presented! These 16 should have a good chance:

Sedin - Sedin - Eriksson
Steen - Bäckström - Forsberg
Landeskog - Zetterberg -

Ekman Larsson - Karlsson
Hedman - Klingberg
Hjalmarsson - Edler

Lundqvist
(Ullmark)

Which leaves these players fighting for one defense spot:

Strålman Kronwall Kronwall Oduya Enström Grossmann Ericsson Gunnarsson Larsson Lindholm Brodin Ekholm ...

... and these forwards competing for five roster spots:

Marcus Johansson (LW/C) 43 13 17 30 0.70 10 12

Mika Zibanejad (C) 45 9 18 27 0.60 10 -4
Patrik Berglund (C/W) 10 3 3 6 0.60 8 1
Gustav Nyquist (RW/LW) 46 13 12 25 0.54 14 -5
Patric Hörnqvist (RW) 46 10 15 25 0.54 20 -1
Rickard Rakell (C/W) 42 10 11 21 0.50 6 0

Jacob Josefson (C) New Jersey Devils 37 1 6 7 0.19 16 -11
Marcus Krüger (C) 33 0 1 1 0.03 20 -5

...and two backup spots behind Henrik Lundqvist:

Jonas Gustavsson 31 13 2.33 .915
Jacob Markström 25 19 2.38 .923
Linus Ullmark 23 19 2.58 .915

PS. Which younger players will take the biggest step this spring and summer. That will decide, to a degree, how succesful we might be in Toronto. Who? (years of age in bold)

Marcus Johansson (LW/C) 25 43 13 17 30 0.70 10 12

How many times latly has he played secondary guy? He played with Karlsson in the WJC many years ago, that is the last time I can remember.

Off course he will be better giving a bigger role that goes for pretty much everyone, but when you have a good deph some have to take a new role for team sake, there are better offensive d-men but he is better defensivly then all the so call defensive d-men.

Focus on what role they have in their team will only resulting in you cutting better players for worse players. It is like with Canada and all their centers, some have always have to play as winger or in the 4th line, it is not optimal but focus on skills rather then roles, players can adapt. Plus I do not want socialize coaching where everyone play equally as much, so that mean more important to play our best in the top 4.

I do not like to focus to much on right or left handed, with your list I guess OEL will be playing defensive guy (secondary guy)? But Hedman is a lot better suited for that then OEL.

Yes that is why you often find skilled offensive puck moving d-men high on that list. But that is just the thing, he is not the puck moving d-men. I normally do not like to focus on giveaways, but in like 9 on 10 cases when people think a player have been bad defensivly it is because of a giveaway or 2, but it seems to be more focus on when puck moving d-men like Karlsson do it rather then when defensive d-men like Hjalmarsson do it, which is just weird to me, it should be the other way around if you should focus on it at all. But I am probably wrong. Hjalmarsson is a good d-men.

Söderberg is starting to play better and better. Wonder if a guy like Rakell is on the radar?

If Zetterberg plays as a winger, then Söderberg should be a lock. If Kruger makes the team over him I will be pissed, Söderberg can be a real boss out there.

Rakell is what this team could need, a energy player with skills.

Yeah, Rakell should be in strong contention for the 3 remaining spots.

LOCKS (imo): Forsberg, Steen, Backstrom; Henrik, Daniel; Zetterberg, Nyquist, Landeskog; Soderberg, Loui.

Now to pick someone to play with the Sedins (if you assume L. Eriksson plays with Soderberg on a big, checking 4th line), a further 4th liner and the 13th forward which should be a center: Rask, Johansson, Zibanejad, Hornqvist, Rakell (here ends tier 1), Silfverberg, Lindholm, Berglund, Hagelin, Kruger, Lindberg, Backlund.

The 16 locks for me would be:
C:
19, Nicklas Bäckström.
33, Henrik Sedin.
40, Henrik Zetterberg.

Carl Söderberg, Krüger, Berglund, Rask, Lindholm, Zibanejad and Rakell fighting for 4C-position as it stands now.
My choice: Carl Söderberg.

W:
–9, Filip Forsberg.
10, Alexander Steen.
14, Gustav Nyquist.
21, Loui Eriksson.
22, Daniel Sedin.
92, Gabriel Landeskog

Three more forwards is needed, Johansson, again Zibanejad, Rakell, Lindholn and Rask. Hörnqvist, Silfverberg, maybe Hagelin. Can William Nylander be in the mix then?
My choice: Zibanejad, Rakell and Johansson. Two wich are capable of playing centre.

D:
–2, Niklas Hjalmarsson.
–3, John Klingberg.
–5, Anton Strålman.
23, Oliver Ekman-Larsson.
65, Erik Karlsson.
77, Victor Hedman.

One more D... Extremely hard to choose. Edler, Lindholm, Brodin is the three I think is closest. I'm not I should lock Hjalmarsson either but...
My choice: Alexander Edler.

G:
30, Henrik Lundqvist.

Hank is gonna play every game. Options for me are Läck, Enroth, Lehner, Nilsson.
My choice: Jhonas Enroth and Eddie Läck.

Gets us these lines:
Sedin, Sedin, Eriksson; Steen, Bäckström, Forsberg; Nyquist, Zetterberg, Rakell; Johansson, Söderberg, Landeskog; Zibanejad.

Hedman, Strålman; Hjalmarsson, Karlsson; Ekman-Larsson, Klingberg; Edler.

You have to pick at least 2 goalies in the early 16 players squad. I would absolutly pick 3, and leave one extra spot open for the skaters to fight about, because it is more likly that it happens more with skater between that date and the tournament then with the goalies. Plus who really cares who is the 3th goalie anyway, it is not like he will play.:) I would not pick Nyquist, he hasnt impress that much in the national team and many is having just as good if not better season than him. he is up there and fights for the final spots in the final 23 players squad, but in a 16 players squad?

Lundqvist, Enroth, Markström
OEL, Karlsson, Klingberg, Hedman, Edler
H Sedin, D Sedin, Bäckström, Zetterberg, Eriksson, Steen, Forsberg, Landeskog

The last spot I am not sure about, but I gave it to Edler because of experince and that he is having a good year.

That leaves rooms for 2-3 d-men and 4-5 forwards.

Haha you picked exactly the same defense I would even the pairings were the same, I also like Rakell with Zetterberg it's intriguing

So Kruger is on pace for 2(!) points this season. He's playing 13 min/game and has been below average at faceoffs. Somehow I think he's going to make it anyway.

He is out for the season (or mid-April) with a wrist injury. Have to think someone else gets the 4C spot.
