seemed to me at least that eichel and saad were the most unnoticeable players, not including the 4th line who basically just penalty killed

On another note, why do people keep putting Drouin with McDavid when they showed no chemistry compared to Gaudreau and McDavid?

I thought J.T Miller looked awesome, Trochek not so much... He seemed to struggle a little last night.

Noticed less of Eichel and Saad too after the rest I will agree with that. Still dont understand why Trochek was picked over Reinhart when you know him and Eichel play awesome together.

I think you're seeing it the way you want to see it... In the first Drouin and Mcdavid were flying.

I do like the idea of Gaudreau and Mcdavid together though when you're talking hockey iq speed etc.

Drouin and Mack together makes alot of sense for obvious reasons.

I get that this thing is a cash-grab and all but I've bought into the TNA thing, I like the fact that CAN/US is in it together, so I really don't care if those with letters are Canadian or American, just as long as they are deserving.

Some observations; Our top 4 didn't stand out, which is good, they were efficient and moved the puck well. I think Ekblad needs to use Rielly more in the OZone. One of Trouba or Ghost needs to sit, they looked less like good players playing the bottom pair and more like legit bottom pair D. Considering the offensive talent we have on the team, and that Trouba hits, I'd sit Ghost, though I do think he was a bit better than Trouba defensively.

I thought McDavid had a mediocre game, RNH was the best player followed by JohnnyHockey, that Mackinnon needs to use his linemates more (his constant failed rushes started getting annoying in the 3rd). Matthews started strong but became less visible as the game wore on ( which might have to do with NateMac trying to take team EU on by himself). By the 3rd Eichel was looking more comfortable and I expect a better showing next game. Not a big fan of Miller and would like to see Larkin next game.

Uhh Trouba was awesome, very physical good puck movement really dont see what you are talking about. Ghostesbeher is there to run the PP and if they are trailing he will be a huge asset to have. Its 1 game and no one has played since last season take a deep breath the team was unreal. This leaf fan narrative about Mackinnon is ridiculous he was phenomenal and making tons of room for his linemates. When you are feeling it like he was obviously he is gonna keep pushing the pace thats what you want from your best players.

It seems like they are keeping the heavy puck possession guys on separate lines. Mackinnon Matthews Mcdavid.

Scheifele was the "heaviest" puck possession guy in their first game.

He was also quite a bit better than the two NHLers you mentioned during last season in the NHL.

They were flying, but not accomplishing as much. I really feel like Drouin likes to hold onto the puck too much whereas Gaudreau loves to get rid of it quickly.

I wish they were keeping McDavid-Scheifele together, they seemed to click well. McDavid plays well with players that play a heavy possession game and are strong down low.

Having said that, Gaudreau-McDavid-Eichel could be absolutely filthy if they develop chemistry quickly.

Are all of you toronotons freaking blind. Eichel was one of the worst players? Get the ******** out of your eyes.

He was one of the worst. Got better as the game went on, but did not have a evry good game overall when looking at his teammates.

If he was the worst, then everyone played very well. He played a very good defensive game. I already see the agenda growing amongst a certain sect of the fanbase, and it's just prelims....

I 100% agree, everyone played very well, he just wasn't as good as others. Those who play the best get 1st line minutes. His line was the worst of the 4, althought there were 2 clear top lines a 3rd and a 4th.

Nothing to do with fanbase. I think Matthews started strong and tailed off, but his line was the 2nd best overall and he directly contributed to 2 goals with his defensive play. For his first game he was great, but not nearly the best on the team.

That works well with McDavid, he's a driver and playmaker. Gaudreau is good at those quick little passes, if he can time a few of those 5-15 foot passes exiting the zone to hit McDavid in stride, he'll blow by defenders with his patented speed and puck control.

Eichel is an interesting addition to that line, right shot, elite skater and a bullet shot. I could see this line clicking.

All 3 also have very high hockey IQ.

MacKinnon is going to have such a monster year now that Roy is gone.

He can be a 40/40 player IMHO

You guys are making pretty sweeping generalizations about an entire fan base, really think about that.

I'm reading your posts as a Toronto fan and it's a bit frustrating because as a Leaf fan I think Eichel looked pretty good last night, he had his moments, nothing out of this world but...it's an exhibition game. Eichel could easily pot a hat trick the next game.

It's not very fair to the rest of the fan base.

The crazy thing is, we haven't even seen their best yet. This was only their first game together.

It could be that they are trying to open up some puck time for Scheifele and McDavid. Just trying to speculate as to why they are so drastically changing up the lines.

Mackinnon seemed to put his head down and motor where, Shceifele/Matthews are very much posses and pass players. I can see them with some phenomenal chemistry down low.

Here we go already. Talking about puck possession, leaving out one of the best puck possessors in the world.

Its obviously 1 game and we shouldn't jump to conclusions, however my impression of Eichel (last night) was that he was more effect when he was slipping into the holes and getting open looks (because his shot is so deadly). Rather then when he was carrying the puck into the zone. Seemed to susceptible to active sticks.

i think it's more than Eichel doesn't NEED to carry the puck.

Gaudreau, and RNH are great puck handlers and good at rushing the puck but they don't need to. I put Eichel in that category.

Mackinnon reminds me so much of taylor hall it's not even funny. He NEEDS to carry the puck.

McDavid doesn't need to carry the puck but you're stupid not to have him carry the puck.

Great points.

In a tourney full of superstars, some of these superstars are going to have to adapt to different roles. Id say that arguably Eichel has the best shot on the entire team. Maybe this means he plays more of a sniper role vs a possession role during this tournament.

The thing is there has to be a beat and worst. Eichle, while not horrible by any means, was at the bottom end of our forwards. Nothing to be ashamed of, most of the boys played lights out. Not everyone can be the best every game, and like you said, he could pot 3 next game if things go right.

This.

Playing with McDavid and Gaudreau, they can tee it up for him. Can't wait to see this line.
