Assuming Burns makes it, who do you think gets the final nod as the other right handed shot... Subban/Letang/Pietrangelo/Seabrook?

I'm not convinced that it's going to be a 4:3 right:left ratio. The coaching staff and management talked last time about it being important to have players playing on their strong sides on the larger ice surface, which makes sense. Players have to cover a greater distance at the blueline, so if they need to stretch to keep a puck in or grab a puck then it helps to be on the strong side. That shouldn't be nearly as big a problem on the NHL ice. My best guess right now is that Subban, Pietrangelo and Burns round out the roster, with Pietrangelo playing the left side.

It's NHL ice and he's a power-forward. Enough said. Not that I would pick him, but you can figure why he's listed.

And not a very productive one. He's also piss poor defensively, lacks any semblance of discipline, and has never represented Canada at the senior level. He's completely out of place when looking at the other names on the list at LW, in addition to Couture, Duchene, and Toffoli (who can all convert to LW). And besides, the size factor will be addressed more than adequately by the inclusion of Benn, Getzlaf, Carter, and presumably Perry.

Lucic wouldn't be on my list of any version Team Canada, A, B or C. I'd pick some guy out of Saturday night beer league before I'd pick Lucic.

ok, slight exaggeration, but you get the point. Lebrun has a man crush on Lucic. no other explanation.

He was mentioned quite a bit in the lead up to Sochi as well...which was is even more inane given the larger ice surface and the requirement for hockey players to, you know.....be able to skate.

Benn - Getlzaf - Perry

Unreal line from the Olympic team. Impossible to get the puck off these guys, not to mention their skill. Although there may be some chemistry between Benn and Sequin; Benn, Perry, and Getzlaf put together some quick chemistry in Sochi.

Taylor Hall - Sidney Crosby - Patrice Bergeron
Jamie Benn - John Tavares - Tyler Seguin
Steven Stamkos - Ryan Getzlaf - Corey Perry
Ryan O'Rielly - Jonathan Toews - Jeff Carter
Claude Giroux
Matt Duchene

Duncan Keith - Shea Weber
Marc-Edouard Vlasic - Drew Doughty
Mark Giordano - PK Subban
Brent Burns

Carey Price
Braden Holtby
Corey Crawford

Forwards with lines:

Benn - Crosby - Stamkos
Hall - Getzlaf - Perry
Tavares - Toews - Carter
Marchand - Bergeron - Seguin

Extra F: O'Reilly - Can play C and LW

Extra F/D: Burns - Can play RD and RW

Keith - Weber
Vlasic - Doughty
Giordano - Pietrangelo

Extra LD - Brodie - Can play LD and RD
Extra D - Burns - Can also sub at RW

Price
Holtby
Crawford

Lots of flexibility in case of injuries with Brodie, Burns, and O'Reilly as your subs.

Sorry Hab fans. Only an insane man would take PK Subban over Pietrangelo. The fact Pietrangelo's GM is picking the team, makes Subban in the World Cup not happening. Canada is deep enough at LD to not need to take an uneven number of right vs left shot D-men.

Looking at this 2016 World Cup roster, Canada is the heavy favourite for Gold. We're in another Golden Age at the mens level.

With the core group of players we have, 2018 Olympic Gold seems favoured as well, making it 4 out of 5 Olympic Gold medals in true best on best. Hopefully we see it happen.

4 out of 5 plus 2016 World Cup Gold = legacy for those involved.

That defense is insane. When your extra's are Subban, Brodie, and Burns, that's just crazy. Those guys would all be top pairing guys on pretty much any other roster, save for maybe Sweden. I can't believe PK isn't going to make it again, and justifiably.

It's hard to see Canada losing at the 2018 Olympics. They have to let the guys go, the Olympics are only every 4 years, and it's true best on best.

4 in 5 Olympic Gold medals in best on best would be incredible. Leaves no doubt who the greatest hockey nation is.

Burns has to make any top level Canadian team at this point. Too good this year (regular season and playoffs) and too good at the World Championship last year to not be picked. Pietrangelo is going to make it too. At this moment, with the personnel available, Canada should not be slavishly devoted to balanced left and right handed pairings. Hithcock an Babcock talked about how important it is to have that balance on the international ice, and it makes sense. Playing your strong side it is easier to extend your stick to keep pucks in the zone, make plays off the boards at slightly different angles etc. The smaller NHL ice surface makes this far less an issue.

At this moment, the best possible Canadian defence would be:

Vlasic Doughty
Pietrangelo Burns
Keith Weber
Subban

Subban gets in on the PP.

Canada always has the best roster at best on best tournaments, and yet Canada doesn't always win. Canada could easily lose this tournament (not a best on best anyway) or a 2018 Olympics featuring NHL players. That's the nature of single elimination hockey.

That's why I love international hockey, crazy things happen.

It is crazy.

If you took the best 6 from my post above, and built another D out of the remaining best 6, it would likely be the 2nd or 3rd (competition from Sweden) D in the tournament. I'll just ignore the whole RD-LD for now.

Brodie - Burns
Subban - Letang
Seabrook - Ekblad

Canada's depth in right-shot D-men is almost unbelievable.

I think Burns is a lock and Pietrangelo has been great this playoffs against top offensive teams. I add those two and the best remaining candidate this season.

Burns
Pietrangelo
Brodie

Forwards would be

Thornton
Giroux
Hall
Stone
