I'm not slighting Giroux. He's great. I still think he'll be the 13th forward in case of an injury to the top 6 guys.

The reason Giroux doesn't make it over Carter is the same reason TJ Brodie doesn't make it over Vlasic. TJ has more of an impact in NHL games because he has such a high skill level (he's 5th or 6th in ES assists of all players, forward included) yet Vlasic is probably the better pick because he plays that no mistake game.
In no way am I saying TJ isn't a great defensive defensemen. He is. Advanced stats guys paint him as a virtual God on skates. But he makes a few more mistakes then Vlasic. No mistakes D. That's this teams M.O., has been for decades.

Think he'll be? Nobody said otherwise. It's just that leaving Giroux is just stupid. Jeff Carter is NOT a safer and more reliale pick.

Embarrassing decisions, really. It's laughable... Toews, Carter, Tavares, Stamkos over Giroux for the first 16 names, lol.

Carter would have hard time to make the initial roster for team Sweden, probably on par with Steen.

Anyway with Price / Holtby and that defense, it's hard to beat Canada.

Vlasic is really deserving his spot (phenomenal defenseman). Keith, Doughty, Weber... they are locks, hard to argue about that, but Subban will be there, and should have been already named, just like Giroux.

Teams are only allowed 20 skaters, so you cannot choose 13 forwards and 8 defencemen.

They could, however, take Burns as one of the D. Then they could just have him play forward if an injury makes it necessary. We do know he is an elite power forward when played at that role, so he could be an interesting pickup for Team Canada. Not only is he one of the top offensive defensemen playing at the moment, he offers that flexibility where you CAN play him at forward if it's necessary.

I really thought I was reading comments from the 2014 Olympic team selection thread based on all the outrage over Jeff Carter. I mean, I figured after he schooled all the critics the first time around people couldn't possibly be complaining about his selection again, could they? :shakehead

Pretty typical of a team Canada selection. People whine and complain for months about a couple players that got left off then Canada wins anyways and it doesn't matter.

Not always. too young to remember 2006 Torino Olympics are you?

Hockey Canada is always loyal to vets who have delivered in the past and will continue to go back to them until they get their ***** kicked. and since this tournament is a meaningless, preseason exhibition, better to get our ***** kicked here than in a tournament that really matters. The only fly in the ointment though is there may not be any meaningful tournaments in the future if the NHL gets its way.

Roster:

Corey Crawford, Chicago Blackhawks, G
Braden Holtby, Washington Capitals, G
Carey Price, Montreal Canadiens, G
Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Kings, D
Duncan Keith, Chicago Blackhawks, D
Marc-Edouard Vlasic, San Jose Sharks, D
Shea Weber, Nashville Predators, D
Jamie Benn, Dallas Stars, F
Patrice Bergeron, Boston Bruins, F
Jeff Carter, Los Angeles Kings, F
Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins, F
Ryan Getzlaf, Anaheim Ducks, F
Tyler Seguin, Dallas Stars, F
Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay Lightning, F
John Tavares, New York Islanders, F
Jonathan Toews, Chicago Blackhawks, F

Sorry, I don't really know much about how this tournament works. Are the players that are listed here locks to be on the roster, and the remaining spots will be filled later?

I think it's fantastic that all the teams play 3 pre-tournament games. Canada plays the US twice, and then Russia before the actual tournament. It gets the chemistry going and it will also be interesting. Much better than the olympics. Can't wait.

People either have short memories or didn't actually watch the tournament. Honestly, Carter was probably our best overall forward in Sochi.

Bergeron took faceoffs, so yes he played Center. He also played wing so you are correct there.

He took roughly half the faceoffs on his line, and then when play started he played wing. He was not a centre. I was completely correct.

The best thing to happen for Canada would be to lose this tournament in similar fashion to what happened in Torino. The public would be very angry about not having access to McDavid due to the NHL's (and Hockey Canada's) idiocy, and there will be less inclination to stick with veterans heading into the 2018 Olympics.

I won't be watching, but I guess I can't escape the news if that were to happen...it will be fun reading the reaction from all those who were in favor of the gimmicky teams in the beginning, "if only McDavid etc. etc. were on the team. who's dumb idea was this?" It will be the only attention I will give to this tournament.

Carter would make Team Sweden anyway. And I think he's better than any of their right wingers.

Not how I recall it. I remember him playing both. He was on the wing specifically with Crosby for a game. He played Center in other spots. He killed PIMS as a Center often taking the faceoff.

Bergeron was versatile enough to play both C/W. As I said I do not disagree on the winger part. But to say he never played Center in Sochi would be incorrect.

Defense >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Offence

In Today's NHL.

Carter has proven he can trap and wing lock with the best of them.

Ultra conservative defensive hockey is the key to international tournaments.

Yes on big ice like sochi. Skill wins out on smaller ice.

Wonder if my guy Mark Stone has a chance, believe he is Canada's highest scoring RW over the last year or so, those intangibles to boot!

It won't be team canada. But i keep hearing 2 different age numbers for the north america team. If its age 24 he will make that team, he is 23 right now but i don't know his age so he might not be eligible for the team if it is 23 and under.

I would suspect considering my previous info if he was able to play for the young NA team he would have been named to its intial group yesterday.

not eligible. He turns 24 in May. Sean Couturier is eligible as he'll turn 24 in December. U24 i.e. under the age of 24 by tournament start date. Only given the arbitrary nature of this tournament, it wouldn't surprise me if the NHL picked some other arbitrary date as the age eligibility cut off.

Team Canada still playing political games with Giroux.

What political games are those?

You recall wrong. Canada's four centres were Crosby, Getzlaf, Toews and Tavares/Duchene. Bergeron started as Tavares' RW and then moved into a spot as Crosby's RW. Taking faceoffs on his strong side doesn't make him the centre, it makes him a winger who took faceoffs on his strong side. I believe the same system was utilized on the PK when Canada rotated PKers very regularly. Bergeron could theoretically end up as a centre on this team, but it's factually wrong to list him as one of the centres of the 2014 team when five other players actually did play that position while he was on the wing.
