Going to make the drive to Helsinki in a couple of hours. I'll go see Sweden-USA and Switzerland-Canada on tuesday. Here's hoping that Joren Van Pottelberghe will be in goal against Canada!

I got into Helsinki yesterday afternoon. The hotel seems a bit quiet, but I saw at least one Canada fan (or, at least, the guy had Canada stuff on). Can't wait to get to the arena later; the atmosphere is going to be insane.

That's for sure. Canadians are awesome hockey people. And great fans.

Anyone else annoyed because YLE is practically showing just Finland's games and a few other games of the group stage? Well at least they show all the elimination games but this surely is not a good way to promote WJC while it's in Finland. I think Finland-Belarus had like 800000 viewers.. I am sure the other games (especially the early games since nothing is on then) would gain great ratings too for ****s sake.

Super annoyed but not surprised since this is a "kids' tournament" in Finland after all, as if all the players played pee-wee hockey.

Finland is such a backwater what comes to appreciating the WJC vs. Skoda Cup and all that second and third rate hockey rooted by the rubes with their Carelian Caps. :help:

As FiLe if I recall te poster right basically said, YLE just doesn't care about promoting something.

The U20 tournament is big only in Canada due to the genius marketing hype built by the TSN, so we are not exactly a "backwater" here. What comes to the quality of hockey, the WJC is clearly inferior to the IIHF World Championship which you hilariously described as the Skoda Cup.

Don't get me wrong, I do like watching these games - I just find it pathetic when some Finns glorify this tournament mainly because the supercool Canadians happen to like it.

Nope. There is nothing like the WJC in hockey. That spirit, energy, enthusiasm, verve, joy, hope and pride! (Attributes lacking in the respective adult competition.) And it's not due to the ingenious marketing strategy of TSN but rather the product itself which cannot be marketed ingeniously if the thing itself was some "wake me up after the gong" -show. Of course they know in TSN how to pack and wrap up the Christmas present but inside the package is one genuinely great show of the zeal of youth. :handclap:

And indeed, the time of the year this thing is played out is just top notch: From Boxing Day to Epiphany; celebrating New Year along the way is only fitting (and the Xmas is a prologue to the tourney itself.)

Depends on how "quality of hockey" is defined. Do you factor in the entertainment value or do you simply determine the quality based on the performance and skill displayed on the ice?

What an idiotic assumption to make. I prefer these games simply because they provide a better entertainment value, the hockey being played is more intense and the fact that it's practically best-on-best each year. Don't give a crap about whether the Canadians like it or not (per se, obviously the Canadians liking it increases the prestige level which in turn brings in better players and raises the entertainment value).

Ok so I checked the Finnpanel site that lists ratings in Finland and the Fin-Belarus game had an average audience of 700k and it reached max of 1.4 million viewers which is quite amazing compared to Finland's population.

Many hockey fans in Finland love the WJC since it's the only way to see our young prospects playing against some of the best young players in the world since most under 20 year olds still play in their own country. I can say I am pretty damn excited about the tournament and I will watch as many games as possible even if it's in Chinese or whatever..

The skill level, obviously. Many of the players in this tournament will never play a single shift on a professional team.

Let's not pretend that it isn't the case for many of the hockey hipsters in this country.

Who cares, what matters is the peers they are playing against. WHC includes players from the NHL and there are several players that won't ever play a single shift in the NHL.

I really doubt that there exist many Finns who watch these game due to "super cool" Canadians. Couldn't it just be that it is a very entertaining event?

U20 tournament isn't really that big in Finland. 800k viewers against Belarus was good, but it was mainly because of the hype of the tournament being in Finland. My relatives didn't even know that the tournament begin.. I think most of Finns really doesn't care about "kids" tournament. WHC is bigger and always will be. It's funny to see complaining about now showing a lot of games, because after all its a small group who would watch the other games. Main audience, absolutely not.

The game peaked at 1.4 million, would hardly call that a small portion in a country with a population of 5.5 million.

It is inexcusable how little this tournament gets attention in Finland. This year we get some of the games on TV only because we're the host nation. Over the past recent years YLE didn't even care to show the games, and those who did charged a subscription fee and only bothered to show the games Finland played in (plus QFs, SFs, Finals).

Say what you say, kiddos. And yeah, SC finals are played in the midsummer also - but this is just the right time for winter events like WJC - the heart of the winter during Christmas and New Year which both yet represent the ideals of new beginning and stuff.

This is not some tiresome tournament for seasoned vets having some fun after the season in some "cool mid European city" like Prague and playing in hangover if not drunk lookin like worn out bums. :help:

Because YLE is not in good financial shape and in the past were alwys reliant on TSN having cameras and broadcasting the games. It's still the same situation: http://yle.fi/urheilu/miksei_yle_nayta_kaikkia_peleja_nuorten_mm-kisoista/8554394

This. This is the best hockey there is after the SC playoffs and the Olympics, hands down.

I'd say almost every player on CAN, FIN, SWE, USA & RUS will play professional icehockey at some point, if they aren't doing so already. Most Czech players as well. Some of the players could end up being among the best in the world, you can't say that about many tournaments.

I'm enjoying this tournament a lot, but quite honestly, I don't see how it's Yle's responsibility to spend (relatively) big money on promoting a commercial, for-profit tournament. Yle's shows the games which Finns truly care about and that's awesome, but even that shouldn't be taken for granted. Hockey is not the only sport even in Finland, Yle is not exactly rolling in dough, and it's not like showing sports is even their main agenda.

If anything, it should be Kummola and co. doing the work and spending the money on promoting the tournament, if they find it important enough.

Not really: it is very obvious that most players are still rather immature and error prone. Of course the attitude and heart are great, and matches very entertaining but the game is not near its highest level in this tournament. Great fun to watch though.

I went to see Belarus - Finland and i just saw Finland- Russia from TV. I think that most Liiga teams would win games against these teams more often than not.

The entertainment value in these games is of course much better than in Liiga. But so are the games in Mestis.

I don't get it. I mean, you have the national broadcaster showing games live on one of their main channels. Are there many nations out there where this tournament gets more extensive, accessible TV coverage compared to Finland?

That's maybe true but the players are also the future stars of the sport, whereas for example team Finland in the Skoda cup usually tends to be represented by players like Veli-Matti Savinainen etc. and some players like for example Doughty pass, to go for a vacation instead.

What I'm trying to say is that the WJC tends to be more interesting in my opinion since all of the players are super motivated to perform infront of scouts.
It's also more of a best-on-best tournament than the WC, with most of the best players being in the SC playoffs during the annual WCs (Yes, I know that the best players below 20 can't attend the WJC either, because of playing in the NHL but that's after all, not all too many)

I'm not saying that I don't watch WC games also but for example; Finland winning the WJC was in my opinion a much greater achievement than winning the WC.
