I genuinely thought we were pretty awful tonight. A bunch of sloppy plays in our own end, not enough drive to the net, not enough shots. A scrappy, disorganized game from our guys.

The lazy penalties definitely need to stop.

Abols was invisible in my eyes. So was Jansons.

Watching last years Canada/German game, noticing Kurz a lot, is he too old for this years tournament?

Yup, I noticed that as well. In fact, most of the Latvian players who are based in North America (QMJHL, WHL, USHL, NAHL) were underwhelming against Austria. They arrived in Europe just a few days ago, so it might possibly have something to do with jet lag. Or it might just be a coincidence, no idea. :) The big early lead (3-0 after like 10 minutes) might've played a role too. Dunno. It's a little puzzling, because our 1st line (Balcers-Abols-Dzierkals) was really bringing the heat and dominating in the exhibition games against Kazakhstan.

Well, in any case, Dzierkals, Abols, Egle, et al will have to step up today.

He isn't. Injured probably.

It's the same story every year, pretty much.

Germany took an early 1-0 lead against Italy and dominated the game so far.
Shots are 24-2. Germany had 3 PP but failed to score on any of them.
Italy had one 1 PP which will continue for 24 seconds in the 2nd period.

Update:
Germany leads 2-1 after the second.
They have outshot Italy 41-5 and still do not look very good overall.
Nevertheless they should have scored at least 5 or 6 goals by now.

Very dissappointed by the so-called tournament favourites so far..
1-2 down against KAZ after 2 and it could've easily been worse for them.
No PP strategy, lots of dumb penalties and the forwards have no group play, always trying to dangle through 4 defenders..

And Dzierkals dangles through 4 Kazakh players and scores backwards while not facing the net..while falling down. What a beaut.

So you disagree with my statement that they played 2 awful periods today?
Maybe my expectations were too high, thats possible.
Better 3rd period now but they couldn't complain if they lost that game.

So if they had dangled through and scored in the 1st or 2nd that would've changed your opinion?

I don't think we've played a single good period in this tournament yet. And, yes, we looked just as disorganized as in the game vs. Austria. It doesn't mean that we're not the favorites to win the tournament, though. :)

The Germans looked even worse against Kazakhstan, for example.

No, I think the 3rd period was better in general, not just the more successfull dangling ;)
Congrats for the win, showed some character in the end. After all, that's what makes a championship team. Next game against Norway, should be another interesting one.

I haven't been able to watch any games at all, but considering how Kazakhstan has faired, should they maybe get some credit for keeping games against Germany and Latvia close? Or is that entirely on those two teams not worrying too much about the Kazakhs?

I'm as big an Austria fan as they come but I'd never pick them to get second and promotion in this tournament. We're missing a USHL/NCAA player in Marco Richter so that's one blow and also the CHL Draft Pick Christof Kromp, but the pretty names at Forward really don't hide the fact that Austria is chronically horrible at producing defenders and the coaches of these teams are fairly inept too. Games with Austria's U20 are always high scoring, the question is just do both teams score high or just the team that isn't Austria. I get that with Mario Huber, Florian Baltram, Dominic Zwerger, Lukas Haudum, and Dario Winkler this team should have a lot of firepower but a few star forwards doesn't make a team and there are no names on the backline that you do know, or should know. I'd say probably a 4th or 5th place finish, maybe 3rd if they play well, but I'm secretly not so secretly hoping for better.

Yup, they definitely look like they belong in D1A. I'd be surprised if they'd get relegated.

And Austria takes the lead against Norway late in the 3rd period. Can't say I'm complaining about that.

Good fight from the hosts, wouldn't say it was a stolen win, although the Norwegians looked more dangerous throughout the game.

Maybe I haven't watched enough U12 hockey but I can't remember the last time I watched that much bad defense. Goalies on both sides were superb, Stroj a little better.

Austria had today the luck as Latvia yesterday, nothing more nothing less. The big game will be against Germany.
