What NT future have 35 year old players ? You definitely don`t want to always count on them. Anyway all you mentioned were there in 2013 and what happened ?

Complete disaster.

Simply if you don`t keep working with young perspective players, there is no hope for Russia and overall for whole European hockey.

Regarding Soin, it's called sarcasm my friend.

Anyway, Grigorenko and Gusev ARE young. Hell, I wouldn't have minded seeing Buchnevich or Golyshev on the roster. They're more dynamic than the stiffs Znorok chose.
Mozyakin, Zaripov, Datsyuk would have been the only 35+ on the entire team.

EDIT: ....and, to no surprise, we're having trouble scoring vs CZE. lol

It's Lord Stanley.

Wish Ovi could hoist Lord Stanley's Cup. Many players, from all nationalities have said that was their proudest hockey moment. It takes 16 wins against the best players in the world to be able to hoist the most beautiful trophy in sports.

If the Capitals lose, Ovechkin will be on the first flight over. Respect. I'll never knock the guy for taking pride in representing his country, he always answers the call no matter what.

I can see how Russian players and fans view the World Championship and Olympics as the highest honour playing for Russia. My favourite hockey will always be International Hockey. I've always admired the Russian players willingness to represent their country whenever they can.

Russia will always be Canadas biggest rivalry in hockey. But through that rivalry, I respect Russia as our best competition.

I don't know if Russian's feel the same about Canadian teams, but when I see Russia play against any other team, mens or WJC, I can't help but watch and admire our #1 rival.

Glad this tournament is on Russian soil, I know you will be excellent hosts and appreciate the beauty of our game. Best of luck and see you for Gold .

Let's enjoy our game. St. Petersburg is beautiful by the way.

Well said! And there is no doubt that Canada is the gold standard in hockey. If you aim for the top, you are aiming at Canada.

Despite the loss, plenty of positive things to note: Panarin is trying to be a leader there, Datsyuk is at least good, Lyubimov and Marchenko were very solid, some decent stuff also from Telegin and Burmistrov.

I totally didn't like Shirokov though, also Chudinov shouldn't have taken that penalty in the first.

Panarin is by far the best player. I agree with above guy though, should have brought Gusev, Golyshev or Buchnevich. Too much mediocrity in Shirokov, Telegin, Lyubimov and Plotnikov (dead weight). Well, this should spell the end of Znaroks. Maybe Vorobiev is next in line, or god forbid keenan.

I will totally disagree about Lyubimov at least for this game - he was surprisingly good there. If Shirokov would be at least mediocre, it wouldn't be that bad btw.

Lyubimovs offensive capabilities are no where near NT level. He was set up beautifully by Shipachev in the third, he was alone in front of the net with the puck and he flubbed it into the pads. Any kind of player with elite talent buries that in the back of the net. That's the problem, too many average players flubbing quality chances.

Its like this, if you want role players on the team that's fine. But its not fine when they end up on the PP (Telegin) and on with top players in key situations late in the game when you need a goal (Lyubimov). If this is how the coaching goes he mind as well be called bary trotz.

I actually see that moment as a plus for Lyubimov: he got into a good position in front of the net and received the puck nicely - just couldn't bury it, but c'mon, nobody could tonight.

Telegin is probably the strongest guy on the team (unless I'm missing someone) in terms of net presence, which is something essential for PP.

About Lyubimov being put on the line with Datsyuk, I actually felt that this was made so Mozyakin could put some life into the third line, so first two lines could breathe a bit easier.

It's systemic, at least since Bykov days. I remember Bilyaletdinov constantly playing Kulemin on the PP in Sochi.

It's a system thing called 'generating net presence, so the goalie would have troubles seeing the puck' and I totally can't understand what's wrong with that.

Except Kulemin didn't play in front of the net. If your gonna generate net presence at least put someone there who has hands.

One thing I've noticed over the years is the tendency of NT coaches to put players in roles their not suited for. I don't know if its because of unfamiliarity with NHLers, or the old Soviet 'every line should be able to play in every situation' mentality, but its not working out at all.

This ain't lookin' good boys, we're off to a rought start and the offence isn't clicking. If Russia should fail in this WC, Znarok should go. I mean, he clearly didn't choose the best lineup.

General opinion on Russian sports pages holds that this team may be in for an ignoble end in this tournament.

Sergei Zubov, Ilya Vorobyov or Dmitri Kvartalnov. Shame that Boris Mikhailov is old to coach he would surely teach those ladies how to play hockey properly.

Just like in 2002 with only RSL players and was not far away from grabing gold from top Slovak NHL players.

It is not Znarok fault.

Russia count too much on Kovalchuk, Radulov, Mozyakin, Semin etc. And even if first mentioned players did played the result would be like 5:2 for Czechs because of more penalty minutes.
They will retire and what then ?

Russian hockey school works only for players U20 ?

Why? who else would be better? There isn't many "eastern bloc" coaches who knows how to handle the stars and make them play as a hard working team with solid game book tactics.

Skudra maybe? :sarcasm:

Skudra is another coach I appreciate (especially when he plays against Jokerit) but that I want to see as many kilometers far as possible from the national team. This kind of coaches, Billy, Znarok, Skudra, Kvartalnov, they may see some success at club level (where they indeed excel) but their style will hardly win anything on the international scene with Team Russia.

We had kalinin, afinogenov and RIP Lyashenko from NA that year, although this won't change the point.
Zubov has accomplished nothing so far, although I think he has all it takes to become a good "russian" coach.
I wouldn't dislike seeing Vorobyov, after all he already met Gagarin once and got some good experience from Iron Mike.

Znarok ... bottom of the pile. Can't teach hockey worth anything. Our team just looking like clowns out there and shaming the Russian nation. Znarok should be ashamed.

Znarok has to go. If we lose to Kazakhstan, I don't know, it would be the downfall of Russian hockey.

God, I'd love to be in St. Peterburg right now. It looks like such an amazing city.

As for the typical Russian doom and gloom over the state of the team, don't we hear this every year early in this tournament? They'll airlift in a few guys and you'll be in the final again.

Meh ... don't know. Our game just looked so terrible. Maybe if we get a good game going against Kazakhstan and actually score some goals, the boys would start feeling more confident. It might've been the nerves or something. There was a sense of chaos in the team's actions.
