My thoughts on the 7:1 game against Sweden.

Francouz should start as a goalie number one.

Cervenka played the best game in national team this season. That 2nd goal was all him. The chemistry between him, Pastrnak and Plekanec was magic the last game.

Pastrnak is really good. He always pulls those nasty dekes and makes room for himself. Too bad he couldn't score on either penalty shot. Didn't see the elbow hit, so I can't say anything about that.

Simek, Birner and Repik definitely made the team better. They have three-guy chemistry. Also, Simek seems like an offensive defenseman... we need those badly.

Kempny showed why is he wanted in the NHL. Even when he made some mistake, he managed to save the situation all by himself. He made some unbelievable improvements over the last two years.

Kaspar's goal was real snipe, hopefully he can score some more like that in the WCH.

Jarusek really impressed me. He isn't exactly a star in Extraliga, but he plays pretty good on the international scene. He isn't affraid to try a deke or two either. Also, just found he is only 24 (soon to be 25). I thought he is like 30 because of the beard .

I found Doudera and Kubalik underwhelming. Doudera somehow managed two assits, but I mostly remember the mistakes he made. yikes. Kubalik had a very strong season in Extraliga, but he struggled in playoffs and now he struggles in the national team. I am his big fan but he is clearly on a cold streak and shouldn't make the WCH team.

I have basically same opinions as you on all points.

I really don't see why Doudera, T. Voracek are still on the roster. Zamorsky should be cut, too. Or just 8th defenseman.

I'd go with Kempny, Kundratek, Kolar, Simek, Jerabek, Jordan as top 6. Zamorsky / Polasek as 7th/8th defenseman.

I'm really not impressed with Kubalik, don't want to see him on the final roster. Jarusek was solid but not good enough. I'd cut Kousal too.

That would leave us on 13 forwards. 1 spot for someone from 2nd round of NHL play-offs. STL vs DAL (Jaskin vs Faksa, Hemsky).

Any Czech fans in Prague. Go get Connor McDavids autograph!!

Watch 97 play, you'll be in for a treat. Europeans love skill, Connor McDavid is the best I've ever seen live. And I've seen 66 and 99 live.

Lines at training today:

Cervenka-Plekanec-Pastrnak
Birner-Kovar-Repik
Sekac-Filippi-Kaspar
Zatovic-Koukal-Vincour
Kubalik-Kousal-Jarusek
T. Zohorna

Jerabek-Jordan
Kempny-Kundratek
Kolar-Simek
Polasek-Doudera
T. Voracek-Zamorsky

Gulas is ill, Sekac should be back. Not sure yet, which goalie will start against Canada.

We'd be lucky to avoid relegation with this sort of team. I'm not sure where this hipster idea that there's some bonanza of untapped potential among younger European-based players comes from. It's not 1996 any more. They're not in the NHL because they're not good enough.

Players not in the NHL, assuming they would like to be there, are generally not as good at things that NHL players need to be good at. Like sniping shots in close quarters, avoiding/dishing out punishment, winning puck battles in the corner, and straight line speed in short bursts. However, those are not necessarily the only skills that come to the forefront in IIHF tournaments. It is a different game.

Otherwise, the NHL-heavy teams would clean up at every World Championship and always finish ahead of everyone else. I don't buy the usual North American excuse after a Worlds loss that "players aren't motivated" or "we're so much better that we don't try hard" etc. If a guy travels that far to play in a tournament, he should be motivated to play hard and win. If he's not, that's kind of ridiculous.

I'd love to see a team of exclusively super-quality Euro professionals play for one of the glamour countries at the Worlds, and do well. With the explosive friendly win over Sweden it looks like the Czechs may accomplish that starting on Friday.

How many NHLers were in 2010 team? Rozsival, Voracek, Vokoun...+ Pavelec?

So we have Plekanec, Pastrnak + Jordan who played half of the matches and Sekac who barely played...

Well there is no other chance than trust to coaches that they know what they are doing. 2010 team looked stronger on paper IMO. Kovar should step up, I dont like Cervenka so far. Goaltending will be the issue as well. Good to see guys like Zatovic and Koukal again...

There are no super-quality Euro professionals left. The days of Patera, Procházka, Moravec, Ujčík, Čajánek, Výborný, Dopita, F. Kaberle etc. are long gone. European based Czech players are not only less suited for physical play than their NHL counterparts, they're also less skilled and creative. There might be an exception or two but that's about it.

In 2010, the KHL was a better league than it is now imo. We had somewhat better players in Europe. The team had Jágr who was still very dangerous on ice and incredibly valuable off ice. It had Vokoun who was one of the best and most underrated goalies in the NHL. And of course it was a human tragedy first and foremost but I do think that the Yaroslavl air disaster had a pretty bad effect on Czech hockey team, we lost three key members of the squad in 2011.

And on top of that, 2010 was a fluke. The team was so close from not even making the playoffs.

Sad but true. I even doubt there is any exception for now. Cervenka's weaknesses are obvious especially when he plays with PAstrnak and Plekanec. Kovar probably gave up to make it to NHL for some reasons and his skating..... If I should think about same players who are quite a good but not suited to NHL, it would be Kaspar and Koukal, however both still not close to those mentioned above. The biggest difference is that Prochazka, Patera, Dopita, Vejvoda and even Moravec were all able be difference players- Cervenka never reached that level except one bronze medal game and Kovar has had so far only one performance like that against Finnland last year in QF. Klepis might get closer to that level...Others dont even have a time to prove me wrong because they leave for overseas as soon they have a chance -like Pribyl, Nosek, Simon, Mozik etc....100% agree that loosing Vasicek, Marek, Rachunek was very harmful for the team from european perspective...still not that important compare to personal tragedy...

Line-up against Canada:

Kubalík - Plekanec - Pastrňák
Sekáč - Filippi - Řepík
Zaťovič - Koukal - Vincour
T. Zohorna - Kousal - Jarůšek

Jeřábek - Jordán
T. Voráček - Kundrátek
Doudera - Šimek
Polášek - Zámorský

Francouz / Furch - both goalies will play

F, Milan Gulaš has been cut, he has some illness.
Červenka, Kovář, Kempný, Birner, Kašpar, Kolář - they all will rest.
1 forward and 1 defenseman will be cut after game against Canada, rest of the team will travel to Russia.

I don't want to be unnecessarily negative, but this team looks weak. Weak in goal, weak upfront and weak in defense. My gut feeling is the kind I get when our U-20 team goes to a tournament-fear that we'll struggle even against the teams we should beat.

I have to agree with Rexor here.

Not convinced and quite, quite worried :/

Hahaha. Meant to say that they will swap in the middle of the game, obviously.

I expect to see regular updates from those lucky enough to be in attendance at today's game.

Have fun.

No need, the game is being streamed on tsn.ca. All is good in the world.
