WC: 2016 Team Czech Republic

From the news I am hearing I guess threads for your team will soon be called Team Czechia rather then Team Czech Republic.

Seems you guys are changing the official name for your country.

"We" aren't changing anyting, only our government and president who decided this change without any public discussion whatsoever. Probably a pathetic attempt to make the country look more "friendly" to tourists and foreign investors.

It´s not a change per se. Most countries, including ours, have geographical name (=Česko or Czechia) and full official name (=Česká republika or Czech Republic). Government is just finally asking the rest of the world to use "normal" geographical name as it is common with 99 % other countries.

Česko is an artificial word that sounds bad in Czech and "Czechia" sounds even worse in English. Not to mention that many foreigners are going to pronounce it "Czeczia" (so much for the "Hey, world, we aren't Chechnya!" movement).

I never understood the perceived need to find a one-word name for the country. Dominican Republic is Dominican Republic and not "Dominicania". Saudi Arabia is Saudi Arabia and not "Saudia". New Zealand is New Zealand and not "Novozelandia" or "Kiwiland". South Africa is South Africa and not I don't know what. "Czechia" is an ugly, artificial solution to an artificial problem.

I don´t have a strong opinion on this matter, I´m just pointing out that this "change" has its reasoning. Word "Česko" is actually pretty old, first recorded in 18th century.. and if you want to have one-word name for this country, "Česko" is the only option.

"Chechnya problem" is not concern for me at all. If someone is that stupid that he confuses these two countries - it´s just demonstrating his own idiocy.

Apparently there's a lot of stupid people in this world according to our government, as the name "Czech Republic" is too long for them and they need to be offered a single-word name instead.
 
Hanzal is now officially out of consideration, as it was expected. He can't go.

So yeah, it's right - Francouz, Furch, Kovar are going to be our 3 goalies for the tournament.

Goalie Jakub Kovar is out and won't participate in WHC (family reasons - wife will give birth soon), he was replaced by Matej Machovsky (Plzen).

Jan Kovar, Tomas Filippi (Magnitogorsk) should join the team next week.

As it's been rumoured, it is now confirmed that Petr Mrazek will not play for the Czech republic on WHC, no contract for next season. Doesn't want to take risk...

I am not sure what to think about players like Birner / Řepík and their chances. I don't know where they would fit. Also, didn't find anything about Přibyl and his injury. Does anyone know?

NHL really turned down on us. Realistically, the only possible players that I see right now are Voráček and Gudas, and even with them I am skeptical. Gudas is RFA, Voráček had an injury late in season. Obviously, both would be huge additions.

Voráček, Gudas, Neuvirth, Hudler, Kindl are all technically available. I won't even mention Jágr, he's not a possibility this time.

Although Hudler is UFA so it is very unlikely that he will come. Kindl could go but not sure how much Vůjtek wants him. We definitely could use another top 6 forward alongside to Plekanec and Pastrňák. But I am not too optimistic about Voráček. Gudas is RFA and already nominated to WC. Neuvirth is also unlikely as Vůjtek stated that 3 goalies are set.

Terrible. :laugh:

Czech playoffs is also over, so we will probably see big shake-up.

So does Jagr get the call to come back again? I know he's been trying to retire from international play for years now...but I'd like to see him give it one last shot.

Zero chance, imo. If there is a last chance for him, last shot, it will be World Cup but even that is pretty unlikely.
 
Tomáš Plekanec will be the captain of Czech Republic. This will be his 2nd time as a captain on WHC. He will start on his 9th World Championships. He has represented Czech Republic on 9 out of 11 World Hockey Championships. That's seriously impressive resume. + 2 Olympic tournaments (captained in 2014) and will play in upcoming World Cup.

A lot of players should take a note here. He will come down as one of the best national players of the Czech Republic.

Coach, Vujtek, has stated that he has interest in all eliminated players from the play-offs (the group includes: Neuvirth, Gudas, Voráček, Hudler, Kindl, Jágr, Rozsíval, Fleischmann). It is expected that more news will come tomorrow. Top line against Sweden (preliminary game which is tomorrow) will be Červenka - Plekanec - Pastrňák.

I never understood that Cervenka hate from czech fans, but I gotta say, he has been completely invisible so far in the preliminary games. He wants to prove he belongs in the NHL... good luck by with play like that.

Yup, it's really unnecessary. Since the first day of training camp, Cervenka knew that he will be on Worlds. And quite frankly, I am okay with that, there's really not much to choose from. And Cervenka is capable of providing offense on big ice, he had good chemistry with Plekanec. Let's see how Cervenka does in 'real' games, games that matters. I am curious to see him play against Canada at tuesday.

Probably more so about the injury he missed 3 weeks for. Probably wasn't compkletely 100% when he came back but he pushed himself to get back. He'll probably get cleared though. Would be a big addition for Czech Republic. He can steal games
