PoMo

Scheifele goes off for a slashing penalty away from the play. He had made a great move behind the net but then took exception for the guy who roughed him up ~15 seconds later and got the penalty.

That's Paul Maurice hockey for you.

Because to Hockey Canada the WJC is more important than the WC.
1.Olympics/World Cup
2.WJC
3.WC (develop players for Olympics/World Cup)
4.U-18 WC/Hlinka (develop players for WJC)
How can you put the Olympics and World Cup on the same level? There is no question which is more important. The Olympics are without a doubt the most important tournament to HC, the players and the fans. It's the only international tournament the players care about outside the WJC.

how about adding Justin Williams and Karl Alzner. Looks like the Caps are toast. That's some experience added to the forward and D groups. It's an option. At the very least, you just have to add an experienced d-man.

RIELLY TANEV
ALZNER CECI
MURRAY DUMBA
HUTTON MATHESON

Hutton and Matheson can rotate in out until you figure out who deserves the 7th. spot for the elimination games.

Perry wears the C and Duchene and ROR are his assistants. I would have preferred ROR. but...whatever, not a big deal. If this team has any success it will be on the shoulders of one very gifted and talented 19 year old. The only problem is Hockey Canada all too often fails in evaluating what it has...

Justin Williams win gold IIHF Worlds 2007

Why would he go in Russia?

I'm fully aware he was there in '07. I was there as well, in the stands.

For no other reason, maybe he just wants to continue playing this year. Although as a RW, all the current RWs with the team in Petersburg are probably higher up the depth chart than is Justin Williams, but he would be a veteran presence on a young team which is invaluable. but a more experienced d-man is the more urgent priority.

These 2 players don't fit current team, imo. And I think that Hockey Canada is not looking for veteran/leadership presence on this team, otherwise they probably wouldn't add player like Matheson. I think they are more than fine with Perry / Marchand / O'Reilly / Tanev as experienced, veteran players.

+ Williams, Alzner will be probably also hugely disappointed if they lose. I can't see them having that much interest in participating.

Tavares?:)

maybe not Williams, but imo Alzner does....and in a big way. with an AVG age of 22.42 years old on the backend, every bit of age and experience can help....not to mention the fact that Alzner is a better defender than few of these players already named.

I don't think Alzner will go, he's had plenty of chances and never has in the past.

I don't think he's had the opportunity before. Washington is a 2nd rd. team. HC doesn't add players usually that late. It's just that this year in Russia, Russia likes a late start to the tournament thereby assuring the best chance at all their players. I track Alzner pretty closely, C team.
I could be wrong, but I don't believe he's been asked before..and if he was asked, it was the one year the Caps missed the POs.

So, I don't agree with the plenty of chances argument.

George McPhee said that they did want veteran leadership before the actual selections started coming out. Obviously it didn't work out that way.

Sharp? Spezza?:):)

No one will be added.

People are going to see exactly how good Tanev really is. Get ready to be significantly impressed.

Could be very similar to Vlasic a few years ago at this tournament. Great defensive defenceman who plays a style suited to international hockey.

What's wrong with Russia?
This is a great country with a great culture and history!
It is foolish to deny.:)
I never thought that you still think about the Russian "balalaika, vodka, matryoshka, Bears"

I for one love Russia. We're Northern Neighbours, Team Taiga, Boreal Bro's!

Leadership group has been named. I'm happy with the choices.

C - Corey Perry
A - Ryan O'Rielly
A - Matt Duchene

I like what I'm seeing from the player interviews. Duchene and Perry both say that they don't like to turn down the opportunity to play for Canada. Both also mention the added incentive of using the tournament as a World Cup audition.

I wonder about the impact of the World Cup on this Canadian team. Duchene and Perry commented on it directly and said that it's an incentive. Duchene said he "thinks" he would have come anyway, and Perry said that the World Cup is in the back of most players' minds. Presumably some players agreed to come in order to help make the team. I also suspect that there is a negative impact though. We know that Hockey Canada didn't bring McLellan because of the World Cup (TSN reported that) and I would guess that Ekblad (seemingly healthy) is not playing due to the World Cup.
