I am still confused that Hockey Canada has only invited six defencemen. I doubt that they couldn't get anyone to accept from the 22 NHL teams that are finished playing hockey. Are they anticipating a big defenceman like a Pietrangelo or Burns (I assume that Weber is definitely not going)? Hard to understand. One injured defenceman and the team is in disarray.

One poster here will be happy to note that in their interviews with TSN the players were noting how it is difficult to adjust to the drastic time change in Europe on such short notice before the tournament. Not "ideal" is what Hall called it.

I hope that they make O'Reilly captain. He has the right temperament and playing style for a captain, and there are no Tim Hortons in Europe.

would you be referring to me? :) and my constant complaining of how Hockey Canada preps for this tournament?

They did the same thing last year. They showed up in Vienna 6 days before the tournament kicked off, had 1 practice, played the Austrians the next day...and then jetted off to Prague to start the tournament. So, not sure why they are making it an issue this year, unless the dimwits at Hockey Canada want them to make it an issue. Here guys, your talking points for your media scrums. It's called covering your ass.

I think it's very understandable and we all should expect this kind of issue. But 6 days should be enough to properly adjust into European time-zone.

Yep, O'Reilly seems to be a good fit for captain. I am not sure what they look for with only 6 defencemen but maybe they are waiting for SJ/NSH series or they expect that it could be fast series. But then again... Weber is already on World Cup roster. And I expect SJ to advance. I think that DAL/STL will be long battle with St. Louis advancing into next round.

it shouldn't be so much of an issue that it is brought up in the media by multiple players during interviews. That sounds coordinated if you ask me. but I didn't see the interviews...it could be that the TSN guys are making it an issue and not the players.

As someone who has travelled the cross-Atlantic redeye too many times to remember, it is a much easier adjustment than the reverse coming home travel....

It doesn't really make sense, for reasons that you say. If San Jose loses, then perhaps Burns would go. Fair enough. Vlasic less likely given the idiotic World Cup. If San Jose wins though, Weber almost certainly wouldn't go, and the next best Canadian Nashville defenceman is probably Ellis, who isn't worth waiting two rounds for. Pietrangelo is the other option, but his team will likely win and he could very easily refuse to go.

Considering that these players are still active in the playoffs, I can't imagine that Hockey Canada has even spoken to someone like Burns to confirm that they would even participate if they become available.

TSN says that there aren't defence pairings beyond Rielly - Tanev yet. That would be a good second pairing for this tournament, but obviously Canada can only work with what it has available. Probably the best pairing possible with this roster.

It's pretty bad when we get hung up and waiting...I don't ever remember us waiting on the 2nd rd. to be over before making final additions. I understand finding 1 or 2 defensemen of A team quality is not an easy thing to do, there are only about 10 of those, but it shouldn't be that difficult to dig up 2 players of Scandella/Spurgeon quality. I thought they were a dime a dozen. apparently not.

I wonder if Team Canada will do the same thing with Curtis Hamilton as they did with Jamie Fraser when he played in a preliminary game vs Austria last year. Maybe only if Marchand is not good to go against the Czech Republic.

The closest situation that I can remember is Subban being flown in for the knockout round in 2013. That was after the first round of the playoffs, but recall that the NHL playoffs started late that year due to the lockout. Subban was brought in after Hamhuis was hurt and put either Schenn or Brodie in the pres box. Canada had not named only six defencemen that year though.

So does Hamilton have any chance to make a team or he is just a spare? Having Sparta player in canadian roster would be pretty cool:)))

What is the story with Marchand? Who is going to replace him?

Any chance Canada can some how sweeten the pot for guys who have 'declined'?

It was the same last year when Canada played in Vienna. Vienna Capitals Player Jamie Fraser played for them in the pre-game against Austria and even scored. And then they got another NHL D-men for the WC. So I think theres no chance for Hamilton to play in the WC.

There's no chance for him to make the team, at best, he could play against Czech Republic and that's it. He's just a spare player for trainings in Prague.

:( I ussually dont like canadian assets in czech league but this guy positively surprised me. Pretty reliable offensive player who can skate compare to other average AHLers who are looking for job here. And he was + 29 this season so he must do all these little things right, like corsi you know..:) He would surely be nice 4th liner:)) If somebody wants Jagr in World Cup then I want Hamilton in WHC:)

Marchand tweaked something, he isn't expected to miss the tournament or anything.

I would rather have Barker, following a seemingly successful season on the large ice surface, than Dumba or Hutton.

When does Perry arrive?
