Man not resigning Lucic was really dumb. First the only way to move Brown was to find a team that needed a "Power Forward" and was desperate. Lucic being on the market didn't help that. Then Lucic going to the Oilers allowed them to move Hall and outbid the Kings, who rumbling would suggest, that they were talking to NJ too.

At least the Kings dodged Brown 2.0 though right?

I'm probably just grumpy.

yup just grumpy. It is too bad that Lucic didn't re-sign with LA but rumors are that the two different offers he had from DL was a 4 year deal with high annual cap hit, or an 8 year deal with a very low cap hit (less than $5M).

he signed a deal in which he will earn more money in less years than the 8 year offer. So it is really hard to blame Lucic. Also it is hard to blame DL for not wanting to give away all cap space and depth options for him. If you want to throw the oilers into the mix, where they are with their rebuild it is hard to blame them for giving Lucic the deal they did.

Sucks but it makes sense for all three parties IMO

The Kings don't sign a player, the player signs, he decides. Was never going to happen and Lombardi knew how risky that trade was for the reason Lucic is now and Oiler. -TERM
He wouldn't sign for less than 7 with the team that drafted him for the cit y and fans he'd player for his whole career and adored in Boston because they wouldn't give him more than 5 and (according to NESN who spoke to his agent) was adamant on term, he wanted 7 or 8 yrs.

DL made the trade because he felt Lucic could be beneficial in getting them to the SCF. He knew when that trade went down it was going to be rental.

Don't forget we had his one year at half price.

thx for the replies.

there was definitely and adjustment period but I thought Lucic fit in pretty damn good overall.

i politely disagree, but i did expect much more when he signed. ok, gaborik not in form or injured didn't help him, must-watch-kopi's-back role, most of the time, neither. but overall i did expect more, considering his skills, reputation and salary. but maybe it's just me and my over-optimistic expectations, i was even optimistic against the sharks after trailing 1-3, gah...

I think Purcell is a RW no? Although Gaborik can play both wings so I think you will see Gaborik on the left side and Prucell on the right. I don't expect Purcell to be on the top line. I could see it, but I could see him playing anywhere in the top 3.

yes, my first thoughts were in the very same direction. that probably means:

Pearson - Kopitar - Gaborik
Purcell - Carter - Toffoli

I think Sutter will go with pairs on the top 2 forward lines to start the year. Kopitar-Gaborik, Carter-Toffoli. And then fill with Pearson, Purcell, Brown or whomever deserves a promotion/demotion.

The Sutter line blender will be in full effect. If Brown plays motivated, front of the net with a passion hockey he will be given line 1 minutes. If he doesn't the you have Purcell, Pearson and King.

i just hope that competition for ice time is preached and delivered.

It was the $, but it was also this:

Why hasnt Dean signed Brad Richards yet for the league minimum

already have enough players to try and clear waivers. If you bring in Richards than there will need to be another payer waived or moved out.

edit:
Honestly what the hell is going to happened here? LA currently has 15 forwards who all require waivers (16 once Crescenzi signs), 10 d-men who require waivers and 4 goalies. (All from capfriendly.com)

I guess if it is to create camp battles and ensure the best player(s) get spots I am ok with it. Losing a guy you just signed as a UFA to waivers is not really a loss is it? But it would be nice if a couple of bodies were moved out for mid-low picks/prospects who do not need waivers.

Shouldn't be too difficult for it to get figured out. No real reason to do anything any time soon either, unless some other team wants a specific guy bad enough, but most teams are done by now until they see what they have in camp. The Kings aren't even over the cap, so there's also no added pressure from that end.

So you're ok with the kings exposing players to waivers and losing them for nothing?

The issue is not cap it is who stays vs who get waived. I know that will be determined in camp, but would it not be better to get something for a guy instead of losing him for nothing?

Or do we think that for some reason all LA's guys will clear waivers? Hickey and Berube say otherwise

Realistically though that's a few months away, and I'm in the camp that at least one or two minor moves will be made leading up to camp. Too much smoke around guys like King.

I'm not okay with losing guys for nothing, look at DL finally realizing guys were going to poach and moved O'Neill. But every year at the end of camps teams waive a whole bunch of players and very few are claimed; we were just the victims of our own success at that point. Hickey was dumb, but I think it was a reasonable assumption that our fourth goalie (third? I forget) would be safe.

Yea, but I can't imagine anyone will claim him.

I didn't think Berube would be claimed when Tokarski cleared (Tokarski had played very well the playoffs before when Price went down), but he did.

If someone's goalie gets innjured between now and when Campbell has to be waived why wouldn't that team claim him. It is a risk LA will have to have with Campbell but my main concern is with the forward and D.
