I disagree with a Muzzin/trouba deal. I question if Trouba will be as good as Muzzin in the nest 3 years. Eventually I am sure he will be better, but for the majority of Muzzin's remaining contract length I believe muzzin will be the better defenseman and will be making less $$. It would help balance RH vs LH but I would rather have the higher end LHD in this case.

It could help solve the 2nd pairing, leaving Martinez/Trouba. Trouba is also only 22. Muzzin is probably the better defender today. If it set up the second pair for years to come then I'd be more then down for it. LHD is also much easier a position to fill, and the Kings have tons of candidates for it.

It looks like you'll have to hold out some hope. Why not? It doesn't hurt too much with sports. It's all out of our hands as fans anyway.

Kopitar takes up $3m more on the cap. Brown has the contract of a top line winger, as does Gaborik. Toffoli needs a new deal. There's no fast turnaround option. Things have become less flexible as guys have signed bigger contracts.

They tried the fast turnaround thing in some fashion, and we got Sekera and Lucic. They seem to be slowing things down a bit this summer, and we get Gravel and Trotman. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't.

The fast turnaround is the only option they have. Quick (30), Carter (31), Brown (32) a month into the season. When Carter starts falling off this team is done. If Quick with his age/style fall off the team is done. Brown might get worse. Is it possible?

There's probably enough time to see if Kempe/Amadio/Gravel/Forbort turn into NHL players, but not much beyond that. They need to be back in 2-3 years max, because years 4-5 could get really bad.

I believe Muzzin is definitely the better defenseman today and think he will be for at least 3 years. During that time I also think Trouba will be making more than him so it would be an easy no for me.

If it was Trouba + than that would be different but a 1 for 1 I am not interested in

Apparently not, if we're judging by the moves made so far. They didn't do everything they could to keep Lucic. They didn't go out and sign any of the few proven defensemen in free agency.

This might be me projecting, but I don't know if Lombardi trusts the roster as much as he has before. Then there are few teams that go the Florida Marlins route and completely tear down a team that recently won. Most teams want to stay competitive to some degree. So Lombardi gives Kopitar the huge deal, even though he seems to be taking a more cautious approach with everything since doing that. He was the last of the guys that needed a new contract who have been with the Kings through all the rebuilding.

Stacking championships on championships doesn't really happen in a salary cap world. Attempting to stack championships on championships is the equivalent of quickly weaving a noose to slowly hang yourself.
The cap is built to keep that from happening. That's simply the economic logistics. It doesn't take poaching, copycats, added strain on players and ego. To sustain you must fall ass backwards into players while keeping flexibility. The kings have ripped every bit of flexibility away and in turn they are completely at will of what every other team or player does.

Once carter starts dropping off LA will need to move him back to the RW (where he was when Richards was capable of being a 2nd line centre) and look to get a #2C. Toffoli will be LA's top line RW, Carter it's 2nd line RW.

i have a feeling Kempe will end up as a 2nd center He was being tried as one in the ahl last year for a bit if i remember right

Carter has a good stride, great skater, nice quick shot, doesn't take huge hits and is in phenomenal hockey shape. I wouldn't be expecting a big drop off any time soon.

Didn't he only play a handful of games there because the Reign were short on centers? Would think they would be grooming him there if he was going to be there on the Kings. We'll see this upcoming season. I think late 2016-17/2017-18 is his ETA.

i'm not sure if the regin were short of centers then or not I just remember he was playing there and reading he prefers center I think he would be good there with his skill and speed

I think Kempe prefers wing actually, that's where he's been at his best and most productive. WHOneedsSOX is correct that Kempe was shifted to C when the Reign were down a couple of centers.

There were some games where Stothers actually moved Kempe back to wing after starting him at C. It's kind of like how Trevor Lewis is utilized. He may say he can play that position, and he may do so in spurts, but the coaches prefer to use him as a winger, where he's a more natural fit.

I thought Kempe looked amazing at the WJC when he was sniping shots from his off-wing. He looked great on RW.

is stoll signed yet? Might be a good fit for the 3c. :naughty:

Agree, but last year was a bit of set back and I hope it is is not the beginning of a drop off. Don't get me wrong I think he has a lot of great hockey left in him, I just really liked the center depth LA had in 2012 that gave the option for him to be on the wing.

I agree, man he was baby Gaborik at the WJC.

But from what I saw in Ontario, he's something special at center, too. Baby Kopitar, honestly. With even better skating.

It's really tough to say where he'll ultimately end up due to his inconsistency thus far, he has all the tools to be either kind of player which is very, very scary. But his 200 foot game definitely needs work. But man do I love his spicyness/arrogance out there, and I really hope he just keeps growing and filling out, he's already a big kid that could be a HUGE kid.

Honestly Carter never looked right last year, whether it was his wrist or what, most games he couldn't even get the puck off the ground. I hope it was just a one-year thing because even though his skating and game sense was still fantastic he lost a lot without that uber quick shot and good puck control

I am glad it was not just me that thought this.

The tell tale sign for me was his uncharacteristically bad performance at the dot.

I thought it was confirmed that Carter wasn't injured?

I think we're grasping at some straws here to excuse a crappy second half of the season. We made up Kopitar's lingering knee problems post-2013, after all.

It was "confirmed" by Rosen that there was no injury to Carter.

Of course, it could be a smoke screen but I believe there wasn't anything major.

This forum has been very much on board the "he must be injured" train whenever one of the top guys has a slump.

Where's the excusing it? We're just saying Carter obviously wasn't right and it hurt us. Call it an injury or slump, same bad result, he just didn't look like good old Carter, and I don't think it's the start of his decline as was posed above.
