If the Kings cannot sign Okposo, Eriksson or Ladd, I would rather
go with Kempe to skate LW with Kopitar. He has the speed, skills and
offensive ability to do well...whereas Mersch cannot skate or is good at making plays.
Kempe rises to the occasion when it counts. 8 goals last yrs AHL playoffs at age 18 and no AHL experience, except the last 3 reg season games. He then was one of the top 1-2 players on the Swedish WJC team (when he had to rise to the occasion) ...then hit a funk for a bit (I think he was playing thru injury and may have sustained a mild concussion at WJC when crushed from behind...also heard of a hand inhury) and when the playoffs came, he had 5 pts in 4 games...again, when it was all on the line. It's not a reach to believe he would rise to the occasion and play very well with Kopitar. He's still 19. Turns 20 in Sept.
Give him a real shot. If he was in Anaheim, they would and he would probably thrive. I was always somewhat jealous that Anaheim would have these players like Palmeiri, Belesky, Bonino who would be somewhat obscure and play well....score 15 or so goals and the types the Kings never find or unearth...or give a chance to, under their system and Sutter.
Case in point...(of several cases) Nick Shore scores 20 goals in 38 games in Manchester and is brought up and scores 4 goals in his first 102 NHL games. In Anaheim, he would probably scored 15 by now.
I saw Nick in a pre-season game in Denver 3 years ago (and several times at the U of Denver) and he and Williams were the 2 best King forwards that night. Nick had a point or 2 and was making plays....then Sutter probably told him that he should have held the puck and cycled, instead of risking making a bad play and the Avs taking the puck and he would be left in the Offensive zone....and now Nick Shore 2016 is neutered....and anemic offensively.
I was hoping for a coaching change...Ii bet some players would have emerged from being held back.
