There's this little thing called "the offseason". It is an interesting time, where one can make trades for players, and also buy players out. Perhaps you should familiarize yourself with it.

We're Blue Jackets fans. We're more familiar with it more that most.

The bad contracts Jarmo was trying to move, Hartnell and Tyutin, he was not responsible for. He's on the hook for some humdingers, but not those particular two.

Otherwise, WASTE OF TIME.

Didn't say he was on the hook for it. Just a statement that our bad contracts have us in a bind. We can't move guys even if other teams like the player, because they are signed for too long and for too much. We better get used to this gang we have now.

And CBJ buying guys out in the offseason??? Best you can hope for is maybe Boll going this route.

Sorry, I should say JD and Jarmo don't buy out players. Different group in charge and they have shown no desire to buyout anyone and there have been very qualified candidates.

The reality is also that Jarmo probably now only gets one more chance (this offseason) to make this work or he's done. That's part of why I'm surprised nothing was done today. I would have expected something (anything) because this team is such a dumpster fire this season.

Question I have for people is if we really feel we are closer to being in the playoffs than somebody like Toronto who is completely retooling? Do you? I'd love to think we are, but I also won't be surprised if we're in this exact same position this time next year with mostly the same team.

Uh he traded for hartnell knowing this was a possibility. So yes he's on the hook

Seems like GMs are gradually learning that in the salary cap era, particularly when the cap may stay flat, keeping your picks and prospects is important.

Meh, would have liked to see Tyutin moved, but realized that was going to be tough sell. Fine with Hartnell staying. Not sure what was going on with Rychel.

Well that explains why Chicago has 3 cups in 5 years constantly moving picks and prospects for players.

Another problem with waiting until the offseason to make trades is free agency. Teams have their sights set on guys and all it costs them is money, no assets required. Then once free agency is over, teams go looking for bargains and your return goes down significantly.

They haven't exactly had the need to do so. It's a bit premature to conclude that they "don't do it".

And no, "The fans hate this player" is not a "need to do so", so Boll doesn't qualify.

Except that free agency is notoriously really, really expensive and there's not a lot of cap space to go around for making such purchases...

Kekalainen said they tried to make moves to help @monstershockey today, as well, but they're still working at that. #CBJ

Called it.
I'm gonna guess we make no moves.
And DSL.
I have been thinking this for the past few days as well. I think Jarmo should be working hard to trade Tyutin and Campbell. I think he should be listening on Hartnell but if the market is weak (that Staal return, ugh) then he should hold. One minor deal would not be surprising, but generally I'm not expecting much.

Hartnell's contract is still too long, and who in their right mind would want Tyutin or Campbell?
Hartnell at this time next year would be much more attractive, barring he would waive his NMC. That is of course if he is still here next year and he maintains similar production.

:help:

If we replicated last years 15-1-1 finish that would give us 91 pts. Throw in 3 points in the next two games and we have 94. Pittsburgh who is 8th in the East has 70 pts with 22 games left. 12-9-1 and we're toast. (Not that we aren't already).

I just don't understand why everyone wants Hartnell gone, where else are you going to get 25-30 goals, 50-60 pts and 100 PIMs from? And would be a force in a playoff series with anyone. You guys are all crazy for wanting to move him, that's the mentality that has brought us to this point in the franchise losing history. He show's no signs of slowing down, isn't injury prone and I don't think 4.75 million is a bad contract for his production and leadership. We have a LOT worse looking contracts if things don't change, Bob and Foligno for 2.

totally agree Ca.....remember, speed has never been what makes him a ~25 goal scorer....yes I too would like him to cut out the dumb penalties, but his hockey IQ is probably in top 5% of the league

I hope he plays out his last 3 years of this contract here, he'll continue to produce IMO
