Sedlak and Milano should be our top line in Cleveland to start the year. I love Milano but there is just not a spot this year unless there is injuries. Honestly the only way for him to make the team outside of injury is if we make a trade which makes 0 sense for us unless we are terrible at the TDL and we move Cam or if Gagner ends up failing and we move Jenner to 3C opening up the 2LW for him.

I think this could be a good argument for putting Jenner at the 3C to start the season. It gives us more flexibility down the middle and balance through the lineup, especially since it's looking like Dubois won't be making the team this year.

Saad-Dubinsky-Atkinson
Hartnell-Wennberg-Bjorkstrand
Milano-Jenner-Foligno
Calvert-Karlsson-Gagner
Campbell, Sedlak (waivers)

How has Dubois fared in his first training camp? Is he showing glimpses of 3rd overall potential and has he been played at center?

That first defensive pairing

I think this seals the deal on Dubois' fate. Surprised he doesn't draw in to get one last look.

I like them. I'd rather have Saad with Wennberg though. Also, I'd rather have (talking about the regular season), Forsberg than McElhinney. I'd switch Werenski and Murray, but I'm okay with those pairings.

As much as I wanted him to make the team, he has proven, IMO, he isn't ready. It's just a shame he can't go to the AHL, because I think he is ready for that league and I think he will be ready for the NHL in one or two months.

I am still not making a judgement on PLD. Still two pre-season games to see what he can do.

We need to stop talking about PLD. He's not making the team. His only chance was to blow away at camp and in games and it appears he hasnt done that. There's no shame in it, but he's not staying here. I think it would be dumb to give him 9 games at this point. He's not ready.

I think Nutivaara makes the team due to Golo's injury. If he plays well during his absence maybe he unseats him as the 7th (or 6th) D but we'll have to see.

I think it's interesting that McElhinney is the backup tonight, because I really do think this is going to be the roster on opening night. Just add Campbell as an extra and Prout as a dman and that's the roster.

I think too many fans are looking at PLD's score sheet and not his defensive game. He appears to be very responsible in the defensive zone. Coaches will obviously have a better take on his defensive abilities, I just have not seen any glaring breakdowns.

I'm OK with either decision on PLD, as there is plenty of benefits of another year in the Q.

Yeah but he's not even on the lineup tonight. From where I'm sitting it looks like we've moved beyond the "who's making the team" to fine tuning lines at this point.

I agree, but we need more from him than that. IMO, he isn't ready.

This. Obviously more cuts to come but I think Torts has a good idea who's on his roster to start the year.

Agreed, he's young and the experience of camp is a great thing for him, hence their decision to keep him here this long. He'll have a great Junior season and a year from now we'll be seriously looking at him making the cut.

I actually like Saad with Gagner. I think Zaar did so well in a few games because Saad and Gagner just always seemed to know where each other were and worked really well together, and Zaar benefited from that. Gagner reminds me a bit of Prospal.

Milano still has a lot of improvement that he can do in Cleveland. Unless something really switched in his brain in the offseason. But Bjorkstrand has done more at the AHL level (obviously).

People forget that Foligno, Jenner, and Saad both can play either wing (and routinely switch). I'm not sure about Hartnell and Calvert, but it would be hardly surprising to me if they were fine on RW.

I tend to ignore right-left shot considerations with wingers, perhaps mistakenly. I honestly don't know why some people prefer right shots at RW. I personally find it easier to cut to center from RW with my stick open to the net (better angle to shoot).

Over/Under on whether Calvert-Karlsson-Anderson actually plays a regular season game together? I put that trio together in a lines thread last year and immediately drooled all over the keyboard, which is usually a good hint that I'm delusional and it will never exist in reality.

I like those lines a lot too. We'll see if Werenski can handle big minutes when the competition picks up, same with Gagner who is more the type to thrive in scrimmage-like settings. And let's see if Nutivaara can actually play right-side in the NHL on small ice after a short adjustment period. Any of those things could fail, but if they don't, we're sitting pretty.

A few more considerations:
Hartnell with Wennberg is an obvious plus to my mind. That's magic, and if you want Saad with them he can go RW there.

The second and third lines might be higher scoring than the Dubi trio, and I'd personally prefer if that trio focuses on defense first so they don't get shelled with goals against like they did last year.

Murray looked great to me for Team NA. I hope he gets big minutes. I don't want him underutilized here.

I did not see the line-up till a while after my post. Missed the post prior to mine.

You don't draft shutdown centers #3 overall. You draft guys who run the offense. He needs to be put in a position where that's required. Playing on the 3rd line in the NHL won't do that. Playing in Cape Breton will.

Of you switch Saad and Hartnell that was the F lineup I proposed. Those D lines I'm perfectly fine with.

It's quite telling that Werenski has already become the best defenseman on the team. And that's not a good thing either.
